Honestly, half of the metagame is just bubblewrap for new players.
When people don't want you to go pyro or spy, it's usually because you can only hold your own in those classes if you have experience. I've been a spy for half of all my tours and i've gone sniper several times and excelled on my teams. But i've also met spies who cant stab a single medic or help at all even when he insist that we're just meta-enforcers and should [I]learn to have fun[/I]
Since you can usually only do well as these if you know what to do, people just assume if you have low tours or[B] no hats[/B], they want you to be an easier class because that support or easy damage wont affect how your teammates do, so there isn't pressure put on the new guy

I usually let people go what they want if it fits within the team composition. I really only dislike pyro on manhattan, he's fine everywhere else. If they start doing something stupid like sydney sleeper sniper/quick fix medic/Tomislov heavy that's where I start to have problems. That or they're not contributing as much as they can as said class. It's a bit like DOTA 2, there are smart ways to play and dumb ways to play (e.g. you don't build battlefury on Bounty Hunter, you don't go gunslinger engineer) but there's no ONE right way to play. You can have all sorts of combos of classes and it will work as long as you have the right composition (a team of supports isn't going to do much against a team with a couple of supports and a carry, etc.) It's just mostly the fact if you don't play the class effectively you're really dragging your team down and people just want to get their rewards already so most people just want you to go the classes that are hardest to screw up.
TF2 is not DOTA.

The meta is there for a reason, some people just take it to dumb extremes. It's like a 6s player saying you should NEVER offclass to heavy even when the situation calls for it.
