And yet... Replays are broken and unused. Duels might as well not exist. The original crafting system is full of old junk nobody needs or uses (when was the last time you saw somebody craft a class token?) Autobalance is broken, the voting system is even worse.
Not to mention abominations like Autoplay, which is still broken. And all these little, tiny, otherwise meaningless details that nevertheless make the game feel so... sloppy.

I mostly agree, though the TF2 Team does seem to have kicked up its attempts at fixing at least some of the mess a few notches this year.
But regarding a few of the things you mention... the class token crafting is still in the game 'cause it's the only way to craft the various promo reskins that don't have their own crafting recipes (especially with how much more awkward and difficult trading is now for some users, thanks to escrow). Admittedly, they could just make new ''craft a random primary/secondary/melee for class X'') recipes that just needed metal/spare weapons instead of having to craft the tokens first, but still. It's a functon that rarely gets used nowadays (maybe when a new promo reskin weapon comes out once in a blue moon), but it does serve a purpose/function.
The Replay system is, I'm pretty sure, at this point so broken and full of technical issues that it would likely take a great amount of work and effort to iron out all the bugs and make it work like it was supposed to on release. But with pretty much everyone having forgotten about it, and with the majority of community servers as well as all Valve servers not even using Replays due to the extra load on a server, there's very little demand for it now. Maybe if the TF2 Tea from 2012-2013 actually kept the Replay system up-to-date, working correctly with all the newly-added cosmetics and weapons, and making sure the renders don't come out broken, they could've kept the function alive, perhaps. Maybe even keep it enabled on at least some of the official servers. But now, the amount of work it would take to fix the Replay mess simply wouldn't be worth it, as very few servers have it enabled and almost no one uses the system anymore. I at least wish they just removed the Youtube-related view achievements, as it simply doesn't work anymore as far as I know. They're dead, pointless achieves that many report as unobtainable nowadays.
I do agree on Quickplay's many kinks as well. I've sent them plenty of emails (and have seen many other users acknowledge it and communicate it to Valve as well), but it seems they still either aren't aware of the issues or don't see the long-term negative effects. QP should not randomly place players into servers where they have 150+ ping if there are adequate Valve servers with better ping closer to their location, even the 'show servers' generated list shouldn't contain US servers for a EU player or vice versa, if there are populated Valve servers of the same type closer to them (which there always are). Also, why are some of their server locations still regularly refusing connection attempts and giving 'error' messages - the Luxembourg ones are often still unavailable for me, and I believe it's the same thing with Virginia ones in the US. People have been complaining about Lux and Virginia locations not being available for a long time now, you'd expect the TF2 Team to look into that and contact their server providers. I regularly see Lux servers less populated or more empty on average than Stockholm ones, which means there's surely something wrong with their connectivity for lots of the playerbase.
People have been complaining, posting on forums and sending emails about it for many months, and still nothing.
I had never used quickplay before the halloween contracts had a map-specific quickplay built-in and was surprised how often it would match me with servers across the Atlantic Ocean when there were many 20-22/24 player domestic valve servers open. I rely too heavily on the filtering options in the server browser to ever really use quickplay even if it worked properly; I'm surprised it's so popular such that people say it killed community servers when they were removed from quickplay.
Yeah, I get that for players from certain parts of the world that don't have nearby Valve servers (Latin America being the obvious neglected region here), designating them to an official server with less than 150 ping or so is impossible, but why oh why are US players being sent to EU and the other way around?
With most of the gamemodes, there's always around 20 or more near-full or semi-full Valve servers in either region, why would an EU player be automatically sent to or offered an LA or Washington server when there's plenty populated EU ones for the same gamemode?
I bet my ass a good deal of the people with insane ping that plague such servers (tormenting others and themselves with such lag) aren't folks with no better option, but lazy players that keep clicking Play Now or ignoring ping values, being sent halway across the world by Quickplay's dumb criteria.
Ping values should be the number 1 criterion - it the player has more than 130+ ping to a specific Valve server, don't auto-connect them or even offer them that server unless there aren't nearer ones with a better latency.
The community servers have gone absolute shit these days, specifically the Turkish ones. All the Turkish servers my server browser can find are on cp_orange or some weird game-mode like Surf or VSH (I like the vanilla version of the game-mode, not the shitty translated Turkish one). Even if they are in a normal map, they are flooded with shitty plugins.
I know this was a problem since the start, but goddamn. I just want to have mods and not drown in plugins and MOTDs that force me to watch them!
Very few decent European ones left that actually see some activity at least on evenings, I've seen even more long-time favorites like Hampshire Heavies (rip) run dry of players in the last year or so.
Try Triggerhappygamers, Schlachtfestchen, Pelippurki (Finnish), Skial Badwater & Upward EU, Kartel Kocsma (Hungarian), Reddit Europe or Gameday Iroda. Those are about the only active ones worth a damn I can think of in Europe.
Rip old esteemed servers like Hampshire Heavies, Rocket'Roll, Kritzkast, German Headquarters, Who Dares Grins and the like, they've all gone empty in the last year.
All hail playing on Valve servers with their weird, imbalanced and often frustrating mix of veterans and complete beginners or kids (in a 1:5 ratio at best, apart from maybe 5CP maps), with some friendlies, AFKers and ''lulz why are you tryharding'' dead weights to spice things up. No admins to keep cheaters or obnoxious people in line, and hardly a friendly mic conversation/banter or any useful communication to be seen.
I don't know what's the problem with Quickplay, there a ping number that say the ping of the server for you, never had any problem with it
I think that Auto sucks because it doesn't let the problem sort itself out. If one team has 2 more players than the other it'll instantly throw a person from the team with more people to the one with less.
The thing is though it ignores that there's 2 people connecting to the server that would fix that gap if it gave 15 seconds. Maybe if they had a warning to players that if the discrepency won't be filled in the next 30 seconds, you specifically will be sent to the other team, unless you voluntarily switch then.
Also they need to add an option to remove festivizers. All the damn FN High Roller Medi Guns are festivized except for one that's 100$ and the lights look like shit on it.
I managed to get an unusual hat for engie and it's a curse.
People will just fucking sit there and stare at me rather than go out and fight. It's really pissing me off. Please play the game and stop staring at my hat

What kinda god tier effect/hat combo do you have? I always wear my Kill-A-Watt Texas Tin Gallon and I don't get a second glance.

Why do I connect to Stockholm Servers when I live in motherfucking KENTUCKY?

I'll take it off your hands if it's causing so much problems.
Don't worry, I've got your back yo.

Unless your hat is something ridiculous like a burning team captain or killer exclusive or you're in a trade server where people can actually appreciate it's price, you're just trying to humblebrag.
How come in CS:GO I can inspect my stock non-skinned item, but in TF2 I can't?
Russians on NA servers. At least other Euros have a basic grasp of English or I can sorta draw the basic meaning from what they type. Can't understand jackshit when someone is typing exclusively in Cyrillic.

You'd be surprised, I was in a match where three engies with unusuals spent the entire time rancho relaxing in spawn because they all started complementing each other's unusuals. People like that usually stick to trade servers but they bleed over on occasion. Especially with contracts requiring you to play on valve servers.
I dominated plenty of unusual wearing people.
They're so easy to piss off. I had this guy, and he got pissed when I told him that unusuals don't equal skill level.
The one good thing to come from unusual hats is that some of the less flashy, nicer (in my opinion) effects are cheaper while all the stupid effects like Burning Flames are expensive.
i just found a game with a ~so random lols~ kid doing nothing but constantly yelling into the mic and taunting in spawn.
somehow he managed to get 5 more people to do it with him, and eventually he attempted to votekick the player in first place (it didn't pass), because according to him, it's spy rule #1.
i asked if instead of being useless spies taunting, they could be useful engineers building and then taunting, so they called me a terrorist.
why do i bother
For me, pyros seem to be able to set me alight as scout from quite far away every time if they're coming head on.
Doesn't tend to kill me but often causes me to have to flee which means i get shot in the back or have to abandon what I was doing.
Just seems like the range is too long. Maybe it isn't.
#2, not really the game, but on pubs (all i play), when there's like a level 3 sentry on point or somewhere important and nobody bothers to tell you (as a scout it's fatal).
[editline]4th January 2016[/editline]
Dead Ringer spies tend to annoy me.
You prance around and kill them whilst knowing that they're DR and still around somewhere. Thus they're a constant nuisance (and you're always aware of them in the back of your mind), particularly when a scout/pyro turns up and I have to fight him and some spy that is physically getting in my way whilst I dodge, and also taking pot shots at me.
That said, it's an interesting game mechanic and so I don't really mind it being in the game. I tend to do better as DR spy (Im a terrible spy) which suggests it's a pretty forgiving option.
the sudden realization that there was a second sentry behind the primary sentry your team was trying so hard to destroy, and then you die thinking their nest is cleared :v:
Oh, what pisses me off more than anything else in the entire game, is how often demoknights swing at me from miles away and seem to get a hit.
As a scout, I jump away from them easily but they still seem to get a hit even when not close. Does me tits in.
Traded up for a Factory New Airwolf Sniper Rifle. Thought "oh nice, this is selling for over $7 on the market!". Within 8 hours it dropped $2 because of fuckwits trying to quicksell.
I'll admit, I'm a bit hard to piss off at times.
But there is absolutely NOTHING that angers me more than someone looking into how much time I've put into something (take TF2, for example) and immediately judging me based on both that and how I'm currently doing in the server. :why:
If you manage to make someone feel bad about all the time he/she's invested into a game such as this, that's when you have to take a long, hard look at yourself in the mirror.
So i just played MvM and was on wave 3/6, one of the high-tour players being salty saying "I wasn't doing enough damage" or saying "my score was shit", only to start a votekick on me and got voted off. If there was enough salt in that server it'd be able to fill up two rooms.

I've had worse, although it was during the time when they gave out a free Mann Up ticket to everyone. So many people avoided the gamemode because of it.
I went heavy as I joined first before anyone else.
A 0 tour player joined after me and went heavy as well.
Tomislav and Shotgun heavy, when everyone else joined the highest tier player requested one of us to change, I obviously stated I should stay as heavy as I was the first to choose and had chosen the right gear and upgrades for the job.
The new player on the other hand had useless upgrades in firing speed on his shotgun, he went full rage saying how he wasn't changing because it was his best class.
He then started a vote kick to get rid of me, and for some odd reason everyone voted yes.
I watched the game progress and they ended up all leaving after round 2.
Waste of time.
I looked at my invites only to find this from the saltlord who kicked me (I ain't blurring out their name):

If this person were any saltier they'd be Dat Lobo.
Sniper :v:
tbh you shouldn't really play sniper unless you're good enough to do better than a demoman at killing uberbots
