This might be rather interesting. So far they've announced different models with styles, but I wonder if they would allow/be doing different textures for the same model.
Robin already confirmed this a while back. He said the Gibus would have this sytem too, allowing Ghastlier Gibus owners to select the original Ghastly Gibus as an appearance (but not the other way around, since the 'Ghastlier' appearance is exclusive to those who got them before the second Halloween event).
I think nobody would use the old gibus if they do not fix it. Last time i saw a sniper wearing it (a new player), it was flying midair, away from the sniper's head. On topic, this looks like a neat idea. Good stuff actually :buddy:
Ooh, sounds like an interesting idea - I wonder what style choices we're going to get. Also, about customization in general, I kind of think some of the paints (bright green, pink) look a bit weird, but on the other hand, I like the level of customization you can have in TF2 nowadays.

so no loadout saving? damn, hope that comes at some point.
Jesus this is like a dress up game
Jesus this is like a dress up game
If it is then all the gameplay would have been removed, wouldn't it?
Jesus this is like a dress up game
Don't talk about my Tour Guide Demo like that. >:C
Jesus this is like a dress up game
NOW it is?
Perhaps the Dapper Topper will get the Uncle Sam version on it when this feature releases.
I hope they do this. I never liked the Dr. Seuss hat, it didn't fit the soldier at all. Too bad I crafted it to make a Flipped Trilby.
I think customization is going too far...
While I believe customization is good, kinda like an online avatar, only in TF2 fighting, and going "too" far is good, but the approach to customization is imo a little wrong with all the most recent items, that don't fit at all.
Don't talk about my Tour Guide Demo like that. >:C
What kind of combo is that?
Would the mullet or professor hair clip THAT bad with the Ten Gallon if they were moved to misc? Perhaps they could also have a different "style" for the Professor hair and Mullet, so that they won't clip with hats. Also, I might be a total n00b, but is it possible to use the model viewer to see how bad it would clip with his other hats? I was only able to test it with the hardhat, and lo and behold, no clipping:

fez without glasses chemicalalia pls make it so
fez without glasses chemicalalia pls make it so
glasses without fez imo
...it didn't fit the soldier at all...
Dr. Seuss was known for making political cartoons during World War II.
Dr. Seuss was known for making political cartoons during World War II.
that still seems like a stretch, imo and it doesn't stop the hat itself looking dumb
Dr. Seuss was known for making political cartoons during World War II.
Captain america kicked hitler's ass, where is the Captain America Mask for the soldier?
Captain america kicked hitler's ass, where is the Captain America Mask for the soldier?
Someone needs to make one, then. :v: [editline]12th April 2011[/editline]
and it doesn't stop the hat itself looking dumb
I do have to agree, though. It's my least favorite Soldier hat.
Captain america kicked hitler's ass, where is the Captain America Mask for the soldier?
Have you seen the latest images for the Cap movie? His helmet as a promo for the movie tie-in game... Which would actually be pretty awesome. :v:
Yes, but he wasn't alone in making cartoons. Just one more employee looking for work. I can't find the link right now but there exists a list of all the artists that dabbled in political cartoon work - it's a massive list.
I hope this means eventually I can make my stovepipe completely gold again.
Hello decreased framerate.
As per OP, they have a series of hat optimizations in Beta atm that they need to ship to live first before they put this in, the frame rate hit will be non-existent after that.
Dr. Seuss was known for making political cartoons during World War II.
That's not an excuse, it's still a bad censored hat. If they didn't accepted the Uncle Sammy because of political correctness or because it used both red and blue on the USA flag (something ironic since some hat paints can confuse teams even more), why include the hat on the game anyway? Did the author convinced Valve with a "waitwaitwaitwait I can do a quick fix to the item, now get it in the game plz!" or something like that?
Wait, the Beta actually has an optimization system? OMFG Exactly how long has this feature been collecting dust?
Since they put the beta out the first time, it's mostly why the Beta runs so much better (I can actually play it on DX9 medium settings 1024x768 w/ 121 FPS, currently play on DX8 all low settings + FPS config 640x480 121 FPS). People thought it was the lack of hats but with the trading + crafting servers enabled (and all the gifts they gave everyone else) people started making hats and stuff and it still runs way better than TF2. Also has a different file structure than live TF2 with its GCFs but I can't check atm.

I was musing the other day, and if the style system works something like I think it does, we could be looking at the possibility of "Dress Code" servers: servers that force clients to download a separate set of files (models, textures, etc.) that alters the look of TF2 but does not directly replace any files, meaning that people could enjoy mod content without worrying about sv_pure or hackers. This could be something as minor as fixing texture issues to an almost total conversion experience. For example, one could load up TF2 with no downloaded mods and join a server that has a Dress Code of "Steampunk". In the same manner that one would be forced to download a custom map, one would download files (or a VPK) that would be kept in a separate addon folder. As far as player Style settings, I imagine the server could also specify alternatives to keep the Dress Code aesthetic uniform for everyone, or permit individuality within limits. I think this is basically how VPK works in L4D2, but given how much more TF2 is modded and how much we've complained about broken or unfitting items, this would be a perfect opportunity for Valve to actually make everyone happy. Given that Valve's stated reasoning for keeping TF2 alive is for community development and experimentation, this would be a no brainer.
