Now, that's a bit uncalled for, isn't it? We are all adults here. I think.

Well one of the dev is a composer for my current project and another is a friend. So since its the best place to keep up to date with the project i wander a bit around and sometimes share my opinion :P

Looks like an unfunny forced meme, if you ask me. Llamas are fluffy, not funny. So many people get those mixed up. xD

But I think they're funny.
But I think they're funny.
It all depends on what the llama is doing. It can be adorable, it can be scary as fuck, it can even be sexy. Mm, sexy llamas.

Either way, I don't see why they became a thing in the first place. Hell, I don't even see why Nolan North hasn't shown up here yet to voice the merc.
Either way, I don't see why they became a thing in the first place.
Not much different than the cardboard cutout cows in standard TF2 or any other inside joke ever. You'll never even see any Llama jokes if you're not looking for them.

Probably because he's a voice actor with a lot of stuff under his resume, this is a free fan project and he has better things to do. He's also involved with the official TF2 which would make him randomly supporting this without asking Valve a risky move on his behalf.
Even if he offered I'd suggest not to accept. It's a fan/community project made by fans. It should stay that way. Once you start hiring or asking for major players in the business it defeats the point somewhat.

Eh, I guess...hey, were weapon skins ever going to be a thing?
Fun fact, i almost actually got the actor of Serious Sam to play the Merc. But he couldn't because of complications and the fact he couldn't afford doing anything for free recently.
Sounds more like it was always a no there.
I think you're great and all Francky, you know I do, but I'd suggest not to keep hassling John J. Dick to work on things. He was incredibly courteous when he agreed to voice Sam in your Saxxy short, but you need to remember that he's still a professional voice actor in the industry. Abusing the privilege of being able to contact him on Steam for free fan animations and stuff like this isn't the best idea.
Especially when recording lines is strenuous and tedious work when you're not being paid for it.

Wait, I think the fact that he can't work on anything for free and that there are complications means that there might be a new serious sam game being made.

I think it's more to do with the fact that the last I heard he was in major debt. He started doing free and cheap voice overs for fans back in 2009 due to it. I don't know his current situation, but to me it sounds more like he can't afford to keep giving people free work and the complications part just sounded like a way out.
Voice acting is a hard field to making a living in. Like any form of acting, it's about being hired. There's no regular income unless you're constantly being hired to work on things.
It's why when I hear nerds doing voices over the mic in games like TF2 and telling everyone they're a "professional voice actor" or that it's "how they make a living" I just laugh and call them out on it.
Every anime dubber or party trick impressionist thinks they're a voice actor these days.

I wanted to try voice acting the Civilian at one point. Kinda still do, actually.

Is that a spawn room?
IMO a lot of your detail is quite flat, Walls then ceiling. Go wild with stuff and make the ceiling varying heights, shove servers into walls, add arches and the like, and then your spawns will look 10x better
like so

The ratings are for stuff like this. It's worth avoiding treating the forum like an IM chat room.
Goldenballs, i'm gonna proof your point wrong. John Dick is not closed as you may think.
I actually collaborated with him for my saxxy award project and he accepted free of charge, and he was extremely friendly and open minded.
He has been extremely opened to requests previously and even offered to do paid voice acting for fans (similar to art commissions but with voice acting let's say). But this has been quickly becammed unpopular has only Serious Sam fans were going for it, and eventually his website went down :(
But problem is, the free of charge thing has been abused by bad Serious Sam mod makers and he lately suffered from money problems.
I found that the refusal of the merc voice was a misopportunity as he often told me he wanted to get known for something else than Serious Sam (And since the TF2 community is a big deal...), but i understand his decision as almost everything in life cost money nowadays, and cash doesn't grow from trees. (That is unless you are in animal crossing but that is another story.)
edit: though, the free of charge thing resulted this wonderful treat: https://soundcloud.com/johnjdick/sam-rant

You've only repeated what I've just said. I didn't say he was closed off, just that he's a professional in the industry and shouldn't be relied upon or constantly asked for free fan stuff. The fact that he was willing to do it for the Saxxy because he's a nice and friendly guy doesn't mean you should keep asking him when you have random stuff you'd like him to voice. It's abusing a privilege and becomes disrespectful when you consider that he's normally paid for this stuff.
It's like getting someone like Robin Walker on your friends list then consantly asking him about what's going to be in the next TF2 update or if he can look at your new TF2 skin.

Yes, because he was $20,000 in deep debt on his credit card, bills and so on. I mentioned this a moment ago in my last reply. Back in 2009 he opened up to the Serious Sam community and offered to do voice work for just a few dollars to get himself out of debt.
Now that was 5 years ago, but even if he's out of debt, I can understand him saying he can't afford to keep doing things for free. He's a professional voice actor and should be hired for his craft. Handouts are a treat not a given. It's his job not a hobby.
I have John on my friends list myself. But I avoid bothering him. At the end of the day he's online on Steam to play games and chill out. It's not a professional means of contact, and one certainly shouldn't repeatedly ask him for handouts.
Don't misunderstand politeness and being friendly for meaning he's an on-board voice actor for future projects.

I agree with his decision. This isn't TF2. This is a fan made mod. Not only is it not a professional/original product but voicing a TF2 class is stupid amounts of work. The average class has about 400 voice lines and each voice line requires multiple takes to choose between for the game. I currently have about 700 files for the Civilian if you include the alternate takes, and my throat was killing me by the end of it. Not to mention the hours of editing and fixing up the audio for use.
In short, it's not worth his time when he needs to focus on something that's going to pay his bills.

Can we hear some of these?
I never really bothered him for anything else than TF2c actually. And it wasn't a question of abuse but more of an opportunity to get known for something else than Serious Sam. It was a simple offer, i was not expecting him to say yes absolutely. And i was writting my post before you continued the topic btw.

Except for the fact that you've told me in the past that you asked him if he'd work on more Serious Sam shorts not long after the Saxxy was released. I didn't say you were being abusive towards him, just that you were abusing the privilege of having him on Steam.
Again; just remember he's on Steam to play games and relax not to negotiate voice work, avoid constantly messaging him or asking him multiple times to work for free on fan projects.
I'm moving on from this subject now if you'll understand? It's beginning to derail this thread somewhat.

Try to not make the spawn too complex, spawn rooms are mostly glorified boxes where people spawn in so unless the layout of your map requires you to make tunnels and turning corridors minimize its concavity (like the little room with the benches in the middle of the spawn).
Same for height differences, they should be kept relatively flat or at least smoothed out with ramps to avoid people getting stuck in gaps or weird geometry.
Walls are good, they have unique geometry that keeps them from looking flat, optionally you could place invisible walls to smooth out the walls and prevent people from getting stuck in those protrusions if you haven't already done that and you can also place some angled around the lockers so people can smoothly slide next to them.
Textures look good and perfectly aligned, decal/poster amount looks good too (the spawn room is your playground so feel free to spread a good amount everywhere including not making it too symmetrical with the benches and such, and perhaps rotate the posters a bit so they look natural).
Those are opinions so feel free to disagree with some or all of them. [IMG]http://www.facepunch.com/fp/ratings/heart.png[/IMG]

Let's see what my tired as fuck mind can come up with. Maybe add a roof access area or something? What' the layout of this map?
