Sup Been mapping for this game for a while (since around March, back in 1.8) and after lurking here for a good while, decided to join the community. I've heard things, and I haven't heard others, but I'm gonna experience this place for myself. So, I've been workin on a Deathmatch map for a good while. The point of the map being to remove the heavier weapons and have players rely on Shotguns, SMGs, and Pistols. .
oh hey, is this the dm_smallarms map you posted on the reddit? By the screenshots and the description of it, it sure sounds like it

Note: Screenies are a bit outdated, I've done some work on the map since these. The map takes place in a BLU complex just short of nighttime. It's not a very big map, though I might add some more areas after I get some playtesting done.
that lighting looks seriously too colored
i think it fits considering it takes place at night for blue, so why not dawn for red
i think it fits considering it takes place at night for blue, so why not dawn for red
As soon as you put character models into it, it'll be hard to tell which players belong to what team.
As soon as you put character models into it, it'll be hard to tell which players belong to what team.
Actually, I think team recognition wouldn't matter in deathmatch.
^ yeah, :P, who cares about team collours, we only care about the collour of blood
Actually, I think team recognition wouldn't matter in deathmatch.
Fair enough. I had only seen the pictures and someone mentioning about how coloured the lights were, didn't realize it was a deathmatch map.
Doesn't change the lighting looks terrible for a TF2 styled map. Look at something like badlands if you want dusk/dawn lighting.

Look at something like badlands if you want dusk/dawn lighting.
To be fair, heavy red lighting can look good assuming there's context such as during an eclipse, which is usually photographed with a heavy red colouration: [t]http://orig03.deviantart.net/2b1d/f/2012/142/1/c/solar_eclipse_stock_by_jsf1-d50p45f.jpg[/t] [t]http://d.ibtimes.co.uk/en/full/369558/annular-solar-eclipse-australia.jpg[/t] [t]http://blogs-images.forbes.com/ethansiegel/files/2015/04/Annular_eclipse_-ring_of_fire-.jpg[/t] And naturally inorganic lighting can be easily present on top of that, having the lights with a colder blue would look really nice as a contrast.
Not anything terribly wrong with that lighting, particularly in a deathmatch map, but I can't help but get a Hotline Miami vibe from such colored dusk colors being used.
Doesn't change the lighting looks terrible for a TF2 styled map. [editline]16th August 2015[/editline]
I'd love to see someone make an eclipse skybox.
Hmmm, If I had the skill I'd modify one of the Skyboxes with a painted sun on it to do that....
I was going more Furnace Creek lighting, though since I don't have the shit to decompile it and check the Env, I had to make my own.
Lighting TF2 Prefab Pack - http://forums.tf2maps.net/downloads.php?do=file&id=1480 Contains lighting coupled with TF2 lighting models. Easy to tweak and edit and all official (taken from Valve maps). Lighting Library - http://forums.tf2maps.net/showthread.php?t=7011 Contains a bunch of lighting presets from both Valve and community made maps. Thread - http://forums.tf2maps.net/showthread.php?t=269 Random thread I just found containing discussions about TF2 lighting that contains useful and interesting content. TF2 Skybox Settings - https://developer.valvesoftware.com/wiki/Team_Fortress_2_Sky_List For an outdoor map this'll do a lot of the work for you. These are officially used sky lighting settings taken from official maps and listed with their appropriately matched skyboxes. Map Decompiling Valve's Dev wiki page on decompiling maps - https://developer.valvesoftware.com/wiki/Decompiling_Maps Contains information on how and why and also includes links to 8 different tools for decompiling maps. I found the majority of that in about one 5 minute session of Googling. Some of which I've admittedly used before (I already own the prefab pack and regularly visit the skybox page for example) but still. If you're going to map for TF2 or TF2C it's best to do the research and do it to the best of your ability rather than just winging it. Especially when the tools and resources are so easily available from a few searches.
