I like "Have you guys noticed that there's somethin' not quite right here?" from the first one.
What happened to these wips? Any info?

Thanks a bunch. I've got a bunch of steam friends that wanted to know all about this mod and this was a question that popped up that I couldn't answer right away
I'd be happy to try and do an actual mercenary voice (as opposed to the muffling from that one thing i did) but I don't really know what lines he'd have

First half of the first one is pretty dang nice imo, but i do like the short and quick aspects of the second one, i think some lines like the second one would be good, but not all the time, it was a bit too monotone, a few lines being a bit mored yelled and some a bit higher in pitch could be good.
Your voice is gold, all it really needs is some good lines and some tonal variation i'd say

People said mine Railgun was not good, and decided to use the one from TF2's workshop. So, i scrapped it, although it was just a little little early wip.
On the other side, i have nothing to contribute, except the a few things i did on emporum, but i highly doubt that they will be useful, since there are better modelists out there, and well, better texturists, too.
(those were the ones i made to see what to improve in myself on the emporum http://imgur.com/a/HqdHQ , but yeah. Sorry everyone.)
(also, does anyone have all in one patch? I am confused in updates. heh, that's what i get for forgetting update game manually)

Howdy! Always nice to see some friendly competition or other people throwing their hat into the ring.
May I offer a mini guide of sorts though? Not about vocal direction (that's not my department) as that's not really my place as freelance/non-union, but I figured you might benefit from how to get the best out of your audio equipment. This also extends to anyone else interested in recording something for a project or this mod that could find this informative.
Typically most people online will probably have a headset or basic desktop microphone. This isn't necessarily bad, as you can get some pretty decent results with a mid-range gaming headset (though they tend to be overly heavy on bass for some reason), so not having voice over quality gear isn't necessarily a drawback.
The first thing you're going to want to do is make sure to get as much noise out of the room as possible. Anything so much as a computer fan can ruin the silent parts of your takes between words. I'm a slight hypocrite with that as I tend to leave my fan running when recording random takes for testing purposes and just process/edit it out afterwards, but I always turn it off when recording something that's potentially final.
If it's a desktop microphone or monitor microphone, you'll also want to avoid tapping or knocking anything it's touching unless there's something buffering the impact in-between, such as a shock absorber or a large piece of foam.
I also recommend Audacity for your recordings. It's free, easy to use and comes with a lot of basic necessity audio processing plugins. I myself have Adobe Audition, and while it's very good, it's usually easier for me to just load up Audacity and work with something simple from there.
The first piece of advice I can give is to make sure your gain is set to about 50-60% via Windows. (if your mic has a separate gain turn it all the way down, or if you'd prefer to use that, turn that up and Windows' gain down). This may sound counter intuitive, but this helps avoiding audio peaking.
Peaking is where the audio exceeds the volume limitations and starts smashing all of your audio into a staticy audio mess. This may not be enough on it's own however, so you'll still want to be checking the bouncy volume level bar and your waveform to make sure you haven't peaked and avoiding doing so by moving further away or to the side of your microphone while recording. If you do peak, you have no other choice but to rerecord that line again or record half of it and splice it together. So it's worth keeping track of to avoid ruining your best takes.
It's also helpful to have a pop-shield/filter too. These are fairly easy to make at home with thin materials such as pantyhose if you don't have or can't afford a proper one, but you can also get around this just by being careful with your mouth and mic placement (though it can get difficult!).
When recording, it's best to record your work in sessions. This basically means just do one long take. That way you can focus on trying to get into character rather than stopping and starting every time you make a mistake. It does however mean you'll have to go through your audio after and cut out all your mistakes, but it's worth it for the acting flexibility, which is what's more important for the end result.
When you have your final recording you'll probably need to do some basic processing. Now a lot of professional projects may ask for raw audio (which is the audio literally from the mic to a file), but unless you have access to a decent vocal studio either at home or elsewhere, this likely isn't going to be enough for most recordings. You'll probably need to clean it up slightly.
The first basic thing to do, is to go through and mute/supress/silence any audio when you're not speaking. It removes any stupid breaths or weird phantom background noises that have somehow made their way into your recordings either between takes or words. You may not be able to hear them, but unless you're in a sound proof booth, they're there, just waiting to be boosted.
When you have your take cut together by removing bad lines and have muted what you can, there's a simple way of remembering how to do a basic cleanup via remembering four letters; "E.N.C.N.", which is "Equalize", "Normalize", "Compress", "Normalize", which thankfully Audacity has in it's effects plugins and is easily accessible.
Make sure to select all of the audio, then perform the above steps. Normalizing and applying a compressor are mostly automatic, but the equalization step will vary based on your microphone. If your microphone is heavy on the bass, reduce it, if it's low on the bass, do the opposite, and so on. You basically want to try and get it nice and balanced so neither the treble or the bass are too dominant on the ears.
This equalization will also vary based on whatever the project actually is, but that's another matter entirely.
When you're done with that your audio may seem slightly quiet in some areas as a result. To fix this simply boost the volume back up via Audacity's "Amplify" effect. Doing so will boost the audio back up without allowing it to peak.
The downside with voice overs however is that if you have shouted at any point during the recording, the amplification will stop when that part arrives just under peaking level. Which may leave many areas too quiet if you have had whispering sections for example.
To fix this you have to go through your audio manually and boost individual sections by hand. It's tedious (especially on long takes), but will keep everything sounding fairly level. Common sense also applies however. Boosting whispering too high will make it sound unnatural next to a yelling clip, so don't go overboard.
Finally (since I can't remember anything else at the moment), make sure your recording frequency is the same in Windows' mic settings as it is in Audacity's output file, and make sure you record all voice over content in mono and not stereo if you have the option. There are several reasons why mono is more appropriate, which I wont go into, but it's easier on the person you're producing the audio to work with it after receiving it if you do this as one example.
You can get some pretty decent results out of some cheap podcast mics or gaming headsets with the right workflow!
Here's a quick example audio file recorded with the above guide:
http://benjaminrudman.com/audio/TF2C_Voices/Mic_Example.mp3
It's cheating slightly as I have quite a nice recording setup, but it gives an example clarity wise at least (background noise and such).
Best of luck!

Yea Vocaroo's recording is pretty bad, it'd sound better from Audacity.
Thanks for your tips though! Been wanting to do more VA stuff, and your tips will definitely help.

nice mixtape
So I redownloaded the game, then 8.0 and the most recent patch, the game still tells me the server's using different class tables. What's wrong?
I'm trying to put together a patch to fix the april fools stuff, but the heavy lines are screwed up and really high pitch and I'm unsure why.
It will probably be a bit until one is released.
Uuuuh... How do I play as the Merc? Im not sure if I am able to play as the merc, ive just seem so many screenshots.

Just type join_class Mercenary in the console.
Just type join_class Mercenary in the console.
I did that, but it says the Mercenary is an invalid class
I did that, but it says the Mercenary is an invalid class
Not sure if something is wrong here or not, but maybe it doesn't like caps.
join_class mercenary
Try that.

It can't be that, the command works even with caps...
Incidentally, what sort of loadout does the mercenary class have?
it's joinclass no _
I understand the original classes can't be in dm mode
though can the merc be pickable in regular modes? it wouldn't hurt would it?

not much of a point imo
plus, it'd probably change things up too drastically with a tenth class

We (I) have tossed around (begged for) a couple server commands that would enable the Civvy and the Merc for normal maps just for fun, but it is not guaranteed.
By the way, if you guys are looking for lines to give the mercenary, and he's supposed to be the generic shooter grunt type, I would reccomend investing in this little gem:

I find it to be the Illiad of the English language. Right up there with Hop on Pop.
