Delay between clicking melee and the actual fist hit frame is what makes melee shit. At most theres like 2-3 frames between the two in any decent game.
you can accomplish that animation in less than 5 frames, look at literally any fighting game ever
just apply the same methodology and techniques from a different perspective, and you can always reasonably place the hitbox before the actual animation's delivery without the player noticing/caring

this is a move that comes out in 5 frames. it has 2 frames of windup during its 5-frame startup which is MORE than enough to convey windup in a short period of time. i doubt anyone would notice if a punch hit in first person before the windup quite finished during a mere 5 frame window.
;52519908']I do agree that the handle texture is very flat, could certainly do with some brush strokes.
and yea the idea behind it is for it to be a parody to the ambassador, so a lot of aspects are similar

Yeah, go play smash or overwatch. It's three frames of windup tops in 24fps terms. It took a bunch of iteration to find the sweet spot, and it was 2 frames of anticipation, with some overshoot and some minor squash and stretch.
If you go look at any of the GDC talks on animation, they'll all say that the only way to make player instigated animations (attacks, reloads etc) feel good is if you have them react instantly and move all your emphasis frames into anything after the initial movement. anything else feels weird, vague and floaty, like heavy's fists do. Jumps in particular are probably the best example of that. A real jumping animation would take at least 12-16 frames minimum, but games need that shit to happen on frame 1.
cant tell if you're agreeing with me or disagreeing considering your previous responses to me, but it feels like you're just reiterating my point so, yea

So then we all agree Hex's anim doesnt need more frames in the beginning. Good.
So then we all agree Hex's anim doesnt need more frames in the beginning. Good.
but what it can do is make better use of those frames rather than a straight lunge, which was my point from the very beginning
You can create short frame windup while keeping a melee near instantaneous. There's no denying that without it melee feels floaty and weightless. This isn't a matter of whether or not that's a fact, because it is. It's a matter of whether you think it's necessary here or not.

Play this on .5 or .25, you will see there is a frame where spy swings his knife upwards before entering the backstab motion. It's quick, but it creates the illusion of real force being put behind the swing.

exactly, you could do exactly this by lifting the fist back and up a bit for the first frame or two of the lunge
then the punch itself feels even more forceful and snappier because it is delivered in a shorter frame window

Because it's in a Borderlands franchise-inspired collection, I'm guessing it's based off Zer0 from Borderlands 2.

Damn. I've been thinking about some concepts very similar to #1 and #2 the past few days. I think TF2 needs more 60s looking stuff, and these are some great concepts!

I am terribly sorry for the shit quality of this concept (i'm still a beginner at PS), but i couldn't get this buckler concept out of my mind. Basic trashcan lid, 1 or 2 warning stripes hanging about. Not sure about the bullet hole but i think 1 or more of those could make it feel less dull.
Also, could be followed by some more urban/hobo skins.
Also², where do you get those nice reference images of classes that people seem to be painting over all the time here? It's always the same ones i see.
Also³, is there any way of exporting/converting a SketchUp model to some other program and eventually getting it into the game or would the conversion process be a pain in the ass?
SketchUp has a smd plugin, that's what gets compiled to a mdl file for the game. Tends to lack UV mapping though, so your best bet would be to import that into another program for fixup before compiling.
Note that this information is years old and may not be the case anymore. I know SketchUp has changed a lot since I last used it.
