I've posted about this before on the Steam/TF2 Workshop discussions and the r/tf2 Reddit and had 0 responses so here goes...
I've recently decided to try my hand at making some custom designs for TF2 after seeing so many other cool creations by the community, and I thought I'd start simple with an Unusual effect.
I looked it up and found some good tip videos and managed to scrape together a decent effect through the Particle Editor (.pcf file) in TF2. I followed the steps Valve's Dev Wiki had on testing custom particles in the actual game (making a particle_manifest.txt, converting it to a .vpk, and making a custom file in tf/particles, but I still couldnt' figure out how to view it in-game.
So I looked it up and found I had to rename it to over-write a current effect and view it through that. So I tried to rename it "superrare_beams1", the file name for the Sunbeams effect. This didn't work so I tried again with "superrare_flies" (Massed Flies effect) and still no dice.
Everywhere I've looked on Google has yielded no substantial results and this has caused me endless frustration, so I figured I'd ask those who've succeeded where I got stuck.
Any and all advice would be greatly appreciated.

You can skip the bold part entirely, it's not necessary when you're making unusuals.
Also what exactly happens when you try to load the effect through itemtest ? Does it still spawn the original effect you're trying to overwrite or is nothing spawning at all ?
If it's the former make sure you're renaming the particle system and not the .pcf file. If it's the latter make sure your particle system has a position initializer, otherwise it won't know where to spawn and probably load somewhere off screen.
If you're still having issues post the pcf file and I'll take a look at it.

It still shows the original effect and I did name the particle system as such. I made a parent system under the name "superrare_flies" and made the actual particle effect a child of it so I could still retain the name of it for reference sake.

If you're talking about showing screenshots, best suggestion is to set up an account on either Imgur or Puush to archive and share images.
If you've got your screenshots archived in folders, you can hover over the image and click an option to copy the image's hyperlink
