For the thumbnail, people like making the item look as awesome and epic as possible. And that's totally fine, as long as you include HLMV or in-game shots in other images.
What really frosts my cookies is when SFM is the only medium used for all images, and there's nothing that truly represents the item for what it is. In those instances its usually an automatic downvote from me.
