Black Mesa V6 - 'Not sure about the shotgun'-edition

My headcanon wants to tell me that Black Mesa initially takes place in the Early 2000s, which is why I believe Simkas' models are perfect. Not only because the equipment matches, but it doesn't decline the quality of the game. I wanna place it around 2003 around the invasion of Iraq. The gear used by special operations and special forces compared to 2001 to 2011 is a huge gap. Also contrary to Half-Life: Opposing Force, Marine Corps "Special Forces" didn't exist until 2005 when MARSOC was created. Unless the writers for Op4 were psychics who predicted MARSOC's creation and land the Black Mesa incident to 2005 and beyond, I assume they were trying to refer to Marine Force Reconnaisance, the closest thing to a Special Operations unit the Marine Corps had.
What gear Force Recon had in 2002

During the Iraq invasion of 2003

Then of course Operation Urban Warrior in 1999

So I've started shaping them up more.
For the Squad leader, should I give him an 8 point cover or a boonie cap? I can't make up my mind.
NVGs have been added and the gasmasks lenses are green.
(I'm reeeally going to need to fix that shoulder strap)

I like these changes but what about balaclavas? Will we see them?
I've been thinking about making a snark reskin for the workshop based on the old op4 penguin-with-grenade-strapped-to-back joke weapon

Here's the original for comparison:

I'm not sure what will I do with the animations since I am no animator, but hopefully I'll be able to rig it into tiny alien insect animations somehow
I just realized I got a free key for BM because I am part of the translation team. However, the language me and some other guys were translating to isn't shipped.
EDIT: I got a BM key for literally doing nothing

Progress on the penguin. Now it's got some Happy Feet™!
Also, what is the optimal polycount on a viewmodel for BMS? Is around 3k okay?
I know that I should probably keep the penguin enemy/snark model under 1k because there will be lots of then running around...
Got the worldmodel sorted out, I still need to add the "suicide vest" (grenade on a string on his back) but I think it looks okay so far

[sp]The game crashed the moment it jumped on me, pretty comedic timing[/sp]
By the way, I can't for the love of me mount or mod /anything/ in BMS. It just wont accept any models, even if they are in the custom directory. Anyone knows what is going on? I even tried to pack it as vpk and put it in the addons folder, nothing. I had to make a sourcemod just to record this video.

I'm sure you know about the custom folder etc etc, but I remember hearing BMS doesn't like custom files very much.

Make sure the mods folder is defined in the gameinfo.txt.
(under 'SearchPaths', before 'Black Mesa VPK Files')
// Mods
game+mod bms/custom/*
That fixed it, thanks a lot! I know I had it there before, the file must have gotten overwritten in some patch or update.
Update on the penguin, viewmodel is ready

All that's left now it to model the snowman pickup!

I've removed that (and improved the texture generally). Thanks for feedback!

I demand that this replace the default snark!

You're joking, but I kinda wish they would add something like OP4's ctf mode to black mesa.
The foundations are already there with team deathmatch. Even if they don't really want to bother (considering that they haven't even ported all the original DM maps yet), something as simple as an entity that allows modders to set their own win conditions for the teams to win would have made a tremendous difference IMO

Hey, can anyone confirm that my penguin addon is working for them? I have a russian complaining about it in the comments and now I apparently can't get it to download myself.
I gotta love internet.
So apparently I made a mistake during the submission process, which meant that the penguin would not work for anyone and normal snark models/viewmodels would be shown instead.
Despite that, in the 2 days it's been up, it had recieved:
• Almost 600 views
• 59 subscriptions
• 11 favorite ratings
• 22 positive ratings
• 0 negative ratings
• 10 very enthusiastic comments
• 1 steam collection inclusion.
For the two days, no one figured out it just didn't work at all. I mean, wow. If it wasn't for some russian kid with very broken english who contacted me on youtube I would have never figured out it was broken.
Am I that good at marketing?
also, it's fixed now

I mean, I put up a picture of a peanut and it was #1 most subbed for like a year
Also congrats on front page
I lose all my retextures of Black Mesa because my HD fried and I don't have backup.
But, I will do some more and upload here soon.
Has anyone made a weapon sound effects overhaul for this? One of my few complaints are the sfx for the pickups and some of the weaponry, like the shell inserts for the shotgun.

Only one that really comes to mind is that Animation Revamp iiopn made

Problem is you'd need to sift through and cherry pick sounds, as the models themselves don't work with retail, and they use custom anim events
Otherwise just look around on gamebanana, for HL2 and BM alike. The ones you mentioned have name consistency between the two iirc, so it should work regardless.

This is pretty neat
Welcome to the very first (hopefully of many!) Black Mesa Mapping Challenge.
This release features 9 maps, each based around the theme of “What’s behind that door?”.
Mappers had to create a map that used a previously locked door from the retail game.
Unlike standard Source mods, this release features a special way to install the maps – don’t worry, it’s not difficult, just different. This is due to the game itself, not something I have changed. There are text and video installation instructions.
GO PLAY IT!
gonna check that out once i'm home again
always love this sort of spin on an already visited environment

Nice, I love the various *blank*ville challenges on that website.
Should this thread really have the 'Mod' icon? it isn't really a mod anymore.
I think he is a little harsh at times, but I believe some of his criticism is very valid, and well articulated, at points. I know some things can't change, but I would at least like to see what some of the devs think.

Well, as I said in my previous post, I lost a lot of the content I had for Black Mesa on my old hard disk(I'm not lucky with HD's), and I'm having to re-create almost everything I done again.
And I remember when I posted one of the HECU's, they told me that it had a very cartoonized look, of course, this is due to the model itself, but I decided to retexturize some details (straps of the backpack, some fabric overlay, and USA patch, oh, and the radio too) to make it a little more realistic, calm, still a lot to edit and I would like some ideas.

I also did AGAIN a health charger screen, with animated texture.

I will upload soon in gamebanana (because I don't know how to upload mods in workshop, can someone teach me?).
Ps.: The original grunts models belong to Romka, and the port was made by Skyninja.

Some of his criticism falls flat/falls into making common mistakes a lot of youtube critics do, I feel. He makes far too many assumptions on the Dev's behalf. Like when he's talking about the questionable ethics lobby fight scene, and he dismisses the entire portion and it's gameplay value because he believes the developers "didn't design the lobby with combat in mind."
How he can make that assumption when the devs most likely redesigned the lobby dozens of times for combat is beyond me. Other than a few nit picky arguments like that though, his points are mostly articulated p. well.
I haven't touched Black Mesa ever since the final version of the free mod came out. I beat that version IIRC, and I do have the paid version in my library.
What has changed since then?
maps, AI, optimization, guns, general polishness.
so everything
