Thanks Dane, and Im sorry that things ended out this way and that people are mad at you.
Dane did a nice thing and threw us a bone.
TF team did evil by pre-poisoning said bone and letting us chew on it.
Like I know everyone is like lynch dane for saying that the update is today or something. but did he actually say that yea it's today or was it taken out of context?
dude...read his post. he literally explained the entire thing. scroll up and read the thread before commenting, my man.
while I was hoping for a post today, I didn't really think it was happening.
there's a real chance it could be announced next week, and while nothing happened today, it's at least a sign that the update is close.
while I know Valve doesn't care for anniversary, I'm still hoping for an announcement next week, releasing on the 10th anniversary (TF2 beta started on September 17th), if nothing happened then, it might actually be October.
what if the tf2 team is waiting for me to eat the (rice) paper so they can release the update and laugh at me
Webpage for the update will have a hidden link hidden on an intel case in the background that redirects to a photo of your favorite class Medic eating the intel like a Sandvich and every time you mouse over he takes a big bite and this, this, or this plays
...but it does set a precedent for Valve to comment on rumors, which would result in people expecting future rumors to be confirmed/deconfirmed by Valve. If they start choosing to comment on false rumors in an official and direct capacity, people will read into their lack of response if confronted with a true rumor, so it's one of those deals where they have to tread carefully.
I suspect this is why Jill's deconfirmation of the rumor was so nonchalant and shitposty. I imagine he was trying to keep it low key instead of unintentionally making Valve obligated to answer rumors in the future. That, and as discussed, it was really something that only a niche of users were trying to read into - I really don't feel that this necessitates some large, grand-standing apology from Jill and the others.
Valve has in the past only commented on rumors directly when they have become SUPER DUPER WRONG and are like, completely wrong. Most recently they commented on something related to Artifact having 800 cards - which was absolutely false, iirc. On top of that, they'll only post something like a blog post about balance, when they need something from the community. I guarantee you that blog post wasn't posted as a "hey, here's what we're doing" post - Valve wanted the communities feedback on changes.
Another fun-fact: Mini sentries. Everyone hates them yea? The birth of the mini sentry came from the community over analyzing and over hyping some weird thing related to the Engineer Update. Folks saw some blueprint in the back of some image and were like "THATS THE NEW WEAPON! THIS IS WHAT IT COULD BE" - Valve saw a bunch of ideas basically describing the mini-sentry and were like 'Hey, thats a great idea!' and added it. Then everyone hated them - quite nearly literally, a community creation.
Valve hasn't really needed to hype any of the recent updates because the community does it themselves. Anything Valve says gets hyped to hell and back by the community. Valve could make an empty blog post with nothing but a picture of a duck and there would be speculation and hype for EotL 2: Duckaroo boogaloo. So everyone gets all excited and hyped over a big update they literally know nothing about, building this fantasy update that everyone thinks is fact - and then gets really angry when the collective vision for SUPER AWESOME FICTIONAL UPDATE™ doesn't match what the actual, more realistic update is.
So, yea, I'm going to show sympathy for Valve. People getting upset over updates/communication/lack of hats isn't Valve fault - it's your own damn fault.
Like I know everyone is like lynch dane for saying that the update is today or something. but did he actually say that yea it's today or was it taken out of context?
Not necessarily out of context but it was heavily IMPLIED that his tweet meant he knew when the update would launch.
This isn't the first time Valve and a whiteboard has led to confusion and disappointment.

It wasn't moreso us going to do it, probably more R/tf2 since to them word of mouth, especially from a famous youtuber is automatically fact.

I'm still waiting for Ass Portal.
damn, its not often we see 500+ viewers on MUS.
On a different note, how likely do you guys think something will happen tomorrow? tough break was announced and released on a thursday, so it's always a possibility

I wouldn't expect anything, but valve does release stuff when you least expect it.
I wouldn't expect anything, but valve does release stuff when you least expect it.
It would actually be genius if they released it tomorrow. With hype going back down and hopes being lost, an update out of nowhere less than 24 hours later would be magnificent.
damn, its not often we see 500+ viewers on MUS.
nah that's actually pretty common during peak hype hours
sorry though lurkers, nothing's happening tonight. i wouldn't expect anything until next week, and even then i wouldn't sit around hyping for it because if I've learned anything from the TF Team in the past year, the only thing you can rely on from them is disappointment.
hope you guys are ready for a jungle-themed update to be released when it's snowing outside.

The weapon in question was a robotic arm (A scout robot arm, to be specific). Valve ran with the idea which eventually led to the mini sentry. But the entire point of that video was to make the community speculate and they would use that to decide on what would actually come.
The community did not implant the idea of said arm being a mini sentry. So I don't know what your point is, if there is one at all.
As for saying valve is at no fault for people getting overhyped, that couldn't be further from the truth. They are the creators and property owners of the game in question. They have absolutely full control on how rampant rumors are allowed to be.
If you're going to be a valve apologist that's fine, but don't pretend that they're free of any blame.

MUS is dead.
GC&SS doesn't quite roll off the tounge though.

Like I said in the OP, MDSS is best alternative title.
jill don't lock yourself in the garage like you did pre-MYM
This thread will always be MUS to me
The point is that you're all morons. Get a fucking life and enjoy the game or go play something else.
Like seriusly, half if not most the thread is shitposting babies demanding shit like the tf team owed you.
Come on people. You're better than this.
(User was banned for this post ("Rude" - Kiwi))
Left for an hour to go do some other shit. Come back to see 450+ people in the MUS and over 100 new posts. Read through it and basically get an essay of a man describing his experiences with the 5 stages of grief and TF2...
Exactly as expected.
lol thats a bit rude

...I don't even play TF2 anymore, but Jesus Christ you'd have to be delusional to not think Valve's treatment of the game, including more or less a mode that they didn't give a shit about, is completely disgusting. It's just finally, finally coming to a head.

Is it really delusional to expect that an update 430 days--or longer, if Dave Riller's comment to Geel over a major update intending to release prior to the end of 2017 means anything--in the making yields a cornucopia of content? This isn't an update Valve worked on for four months.
To Uncle Dane, I feel bad that you're being used as a scapegoat here. As you and others have stated quite eloquently, Valve is ultimately at fault here for not dispelling an out-of-control rumor grounded in evidence gathered from Valve HQ itself.
Captain Dane: Civil War
Releasing 9/6/2017

Your right. The Team Fortress 2 development team technically owes us absolutely nothing. They chose to work on this game because they care about it and they could easily give it up to go work on Dota 2 or VR instead. However, by choosing to work on TF2, they have a responsibility to treat the community with respect. This includes clear and concise communication. They are professionals working at a professional game company after all. Confirming the falsity of a community theory based on a tweet from a prominent, trustworthy community member with a shitpost in a steam chat to another community member does not at all live up to a professional standard. Looking at this way, the TF2 communities anger is completely understandable.
-eh snip nvm-
Aside from the tweet I don't see any difference from the other weeks this has happened.
Just give it a rest and it'll come eventually.
