TF2 General Chat and Speculation Station: Whiteboard Blues

God, ten years, huh? It's almost unprecedented for multiplayer games outside MMORPGs like WoW to be 'alive' after that long in terms of ongoing developer support and content updates, populated servers, a playerbase of 60k+ almost at anytime etc...
Too bad that it does feel like the level of support and new content has been dropping off in the past 2 years or so, and that many experienced players and veterans of the past have moved on by now or have been rather jaded with regards to the game, and that a huge portion of the existing numbers of players are very likely just kids and people that pick up the game 'cause it's free, play it for a few months or a year, and then just move on.
I'm sure the game will still be 'alive' in 5 years time, in the sense of being able to find a populated game of TF2 quite easily, but the game's way past its prime, let's face it. For me, TF2 hasn't really felt the same since all of my favorite community servers with a map rotation died on between 2012 and 2014 or so, and Valve servers even with QP were just a mediocre, lackluster substitute. The MyM changes have made it worse in many ways.
I feel like TF2 is under appreciated quite a lot. I don't mean in sense that people should still play after all these years, because people will naturally get sick of it. I mean in the sense of how excellent the design of the game is, from the brush stroke textures, the amazing ensemble of merc personalities, the design of all the character models and silhouettes, the top notch movement system, and so much more. Or how much it did for gaming industry. It was one of the first games to do this sort of free to play model. It was unheard of, risky, and took a lot of balls on valves end, but it paid off and was a huge staple for video games. It was the first (that I know of) game to have the loot box system, and now almost every AAA, and still a large amount of small games, has it now, for better or worse, that system changed everything.
But I guess people are too caught up with 'lol dead game' because it gets a couple thousand less players after 10 years.
Shitty blogpost, served up late? Can we at least get that?
Those pesky-ass noisemakers are turned on automagically, aren't they?
Meanwhile valve employees are busy commenting to loads of peoples questions and speculations about the new Dust 2.
feels bad for tf2 :disappoint:
So at what time do we realize that there prolly will neither be a blogpost nor the update release?
TF2 taught me to never trust a game with a lootbox system
it punched me in the dick but in the end it made me stronger. jokes on you motherfucker
Here's to another 10 years to all you magnificent bastards. :poot:
Another 10 years on the same engine? Hah.
Maybe we should ask the die-hard TFC players how they feel. In their defense though, TFC's most recent update (more of a bugfix) was July 10.

Tonights the night bois.
Good luck to everyone with their hopes set on today. At the very least you can celebrate the event yourselves if nothing happens.
Gonna try and keep this short, but I just wanna throw in my sappy happy birthday wishes for the game that has ultimately shaped my life for the better and has given me many wonderful experiences I am so thankful for.
Thanks to Team Fortress 2 and everyone behind it, I've ventured more outward being the huge introvert that I am. I've made friends, I've made memories. I've met the love of my life because of this damned video game.
The Scream Fortress events will always hold a special place in my heart because of how it broke me out of my shell to try out the Monoculus update with my friends long ago. If it weren't for them, I wouldn't be sitting in this cute lil apartment I reside in with said love of my life, making maps, items, and ideas with him all side-by-side day in and day out. He has taught me so, so much, and my heart has grown strong.
I got into this game as an escape for my depression and anxieties. While they're ever still looming, it's not leaving the big, bad impression on me now as it used to. While I used to distract myself from my worries just playing this game, it has now evolved into a productive distraction where map asset-making and hat concept creating shine through where things used to feel grey. Doing all of this alongside the supportive and beautifully creative community where we all share ideas and the same interests has proven to be so heartwarming, and I hope this tremendous feeling doesn't leave anytime soon.
So again, thank you, Team Fortress 2. All that you've given me, all that you've shown me to keep on going and to try and be a better me every single day. Do I feel awfully silly saying all of this about a cartoony FPS filled to the brim with hats and mutated bread and robots galore? Yes. Do I wish I could take any of this back? -Hell- no.
Happy 10th birthday, ya filthy mercenaries. To the ones who have evolved in this wacky, fictional world, and the ones who actually brought this wacky world to life. Super big cheers to all of you on the team. I hope there's delicious cake to fuel you to amazing feats.
Keep at it, friends. Thank you so, so much.
I'm liking the turnaround of mood here, it's nice to see everyone be appreciative of a game they've known and loved for years now, despite the update drought. Good on ya, guys.
Happy birthday, TF2! Stay alive another ten years and gladden us with new stuff! :toot:
11th October here. My hopes have sadly died. :<
Happy birthday TF2, helluva game to make me get into PC gaming after all that time using the 360 version, doubt there'll be another game quite like it.
11th October here. My hopes have sadly died. :<
Luckily enough Australia runs on imaginary time and the rest of the world are still living ever so optimistically in the 10/10 zone.
We have around 13 Hours left in the Birthday Dream box.
We will reach peak time in 6~ hours. Peak time then ends after 4 hours, then we die.

[editline]10th October 2017[/editline]

seeing everybody give up and just tell memories past as if in a funeral is far from a good sign.

This is hardly a turnaround, this is more like the final message before you completely lose hope and move on.
And I was planning to buy a cake today to celebrate...
Did it

Happy birthday, TF2!
I'm equal parts excited and prepared for disappointment.

It's all gonna go to shit when nothing happens tonight. :v:
Well, here's something by Robin Walker:
http://www.pcgamer.com/valve-reflects-on-the-orange-box-ten-years-later/
You've kept updating and transforming Team Fortress 2 over the years, and few competitive games have that kind of lifespan. What's been the philosophy behind that? How have you kept reinventing the game while still making it recognisably TF2?
The philosophy is pretty simple—listen to your players, pay attention to what they're doing, ship your work, and iterate as much as possible. But TF2's a strange thing. In some ways, it seems so different to how it launched in 2007, but at the same time, it still feels utterly familiar. There are still Snipers on the battlements in 2Fort having a fine old time paying no attention to what's going on with their flag in the basement. There's a much wider set of potential threats to deal with than they faced back in 2007, but they now have many more choices in exactly how they want to face them. And no matter what they decide, they can ensure they look different to all the other Snipers in the game.
So TF2's core gameplay seems to be fairly resilient in the face of all the horrible things we've done to it, and I think that's largely due to how we've approached our role in the process. We've always felt that our job was to support players in whatever they're trying to do. As a result, it's the players who've decided how TF2 should be played throughout the last decade. We've added all kinds of elements to the game, from both our and the community's minds, and the players have been the ones to digest and choose the way those elements ended up incorporated into the whole, even if it meant outright rejection in some cases.
Happy birthday tf2.
Happy birthday you amazing bunch of crazy bastards. Let's hope we all can go on strong eh?
"Happy Birthday Half-Life EP. 2, Portal, and TF2! You get nothing. Fuck you."
-Love, Valve.
ps: buy shit for dota and csgo

How long has Robin not been an active part of the dev team for TF2? I think it has been many years since he was a member of day-by-day development of the game.
I get that he was instrumental in the shaping of TF2, being one of the founders of the TF mod in the first place, but is it fair to say he has a reasonable understanding of what the game is like today? What he's saying here and what we've seen recently don't seem to line up very well.
its only 8 am at valve and the thread is already 130 man strong
this is going to be a very interesting night
