Looks really unbalanced rn, put a big box of bolts under the thing. Also model the bolt as a separate projectile instead of being a part of the gun.
Projectile is a separate model, i put it there for now just in sake of preview, heh.
the wheels look out of place. are they large rubber wheels? I think you should try a more medieval circular wooden wheel or replace the wheel assembly with something different entirely. what about some sort of mechanism to automatically load the bolts?
Thanks for critcism everyone, i'll see what i can do about it!

Updated a few things. Unfortunately, had to change the design a bit, because i realized i am a retard.
I uh... Had the rope behind a few bars, it logically wouldn't have work.
[t]http://i.imgur.com/jDjlP3V.png [/t]
:v: , Gladly it's fixed now.
I think it looks a lot lighter now, any other crits?
Looks a bit thin, you might want to bulk it up a bit.
Looks a bit thin, you might want to bulk it up a bit.
So more like this? It's basically a bit bigger, not fatter, just bigger. I think it works. But if that's not big enough i think i can do something about it

Original for scale:
[t]http://i.imgur.com/MA9LJnd.png[/t]
Try working on the proportions a bit more. What stands out at first sight is the wheels whereas the focus should be on the ballista itself, mainly the bow and arrow which should be much more bulky. Make the whole thing fatter and reduce the prominence of the wheels. It also needs something where the ammo drums are located for all the miniguns - this area feels very empty right now.

Perhaps i should just get rid of the wheels all together?
[t]http://i.imgur.com/ftzCtk2.png[/t] (quickly mashed together)
Also, the issue is, i literally dont know what to put as a "drum" replacer, its just none of the ballistas i saw ever came with something like this.

maybe give it a vague magazine like the Chinese repeating crossbows
[t]http://www.atarn.org/chinese/Image34.gif[/t]
a single shot heavy primary seems to have low chances of working out
[t]http://i.imgur.com/4AfDc2F.png[/t]
Alright! It looks great but try flipping the frame so that its around position in the ammo box region like the mini gun.

Now it's getting a bit noisy. I'd simplify the mount by using bigger parts. You can still keep the wheels, just make them smaller (maybe 2 on the front and 2 on the back?). Or try what sims_doc suggested.

You could have some sort of big wooden gears underneath that use the spinning animation of the barrel to justify the reload

I loove the idea of portable ballistas, but I have to ask you; Do you ever see Valve implementing a primary weapon for Heavy that isn't something that rapidfires bullets? A ballista is the complete opposite, it firing arrows very slowly.

Well, people are still continuing making chainsaws for heavy, tanks for heavy, as a primary weapon, i really dont see why not.
And i think it could be pretty viable in medieval mode, if we'll ever get an update for it of course.

Might be a bit complicated, but i'll see what i can do
Is it just me or is the community pretty ungrateful when it comes to workshop votes. I've heard people telling me that their items are getting rating in their 70s and sometimes 60s, despite them being well done items. I've experienced this as well, so I gotta ask, is this the norm now?

I think it's because of the voting queue. Before it, people would see an item they didn't like, but instead of actually voting, they'd just walk away (therefore the only real votes an item can get are positives). Now, through the voting queue, the same persons are forced to make a choice (actually downvote items you don't think are quality/fitting with the game) to proceed.

Well it does look better, it turns out to be a strange ballista but, it does look better.
A little bit boring in first person though

That whole thing just comes across as a bunch of bars thrown together. There's no real defenition to any of it. Also the first person looks boring because there's no areas at all that indicate any function of the device and the fact that it's all square blocks doesn't help either. Same goes for the arrow that's just a cone tip, I'd go for a more flat diamond shape
I'd really suggest going back to the concepting stage of this thing because just shifting around these square bars won't get you very far

I might just get rid of the stand at the bottom altogether, just make it a huge crossbow.

I know it's wicked late since you just released the item, but there's really no good reason why the cosmetic itself gets smaller around where the default pants and boots meet. Making cosmetics that look overly bulky because they go over the default model is absolutely fine, especially if it works well, but in this case, you should really make the item's shin area just as bulky as the shorts/thigh area, otherwise it looks incredibly odd, even for that kind of item's standards.

Yeah the tough part of this item was the area around the knees.
When I started modeling it, it was as you suggest, but it looked more odd (imho).

Well, every time you look at the ballista, you see exactly that, there are square blocks of wood. I cant just go and make a completely different shape, merge all the wood into one flat, connected mesh and and call it a ballista, right? It'll look very off, and will not look like planks of wood being put together.
Speaking of which i was trying to base it off this:
[t]https://users.ece.cmu.edu/~koopman/ballista/pics/ballist1.gif[/t]
And, its still not even done, it's in very early stage. I am showing the progress based off critique mostly because people just tell me: Do this, do that. So i try to do it, and i show what it "can" look like, it's not like it's ready for release or anything like that. In the end i might just drop it and redo the entire thing from scratch.
Isn't it the whole point of giving critique? To get it early, and do it in the more right way?
I mean, i am not trying to protect it by any means, i know you guys are trying to tell me how to do it for better. I appreciate that, i really do. But it kind of gets harder to go and just please everyone. It even goes against what i originally wanted it to be.
Sorry if it came out a bit rude, it's just hard to get all the critique and utilize it just right
So swap of the ballista idea, cause those were never made to be handheld size and start looking into rotary mag crossbows, way cooler concepts to draw from there

Those legs though. I know others have said it, but it's just abysmal how big they are. Skin color is also wrong too, and they are also a bit weird looking. They don't really look like knees, they look more like some sort of weird looking big socks. Sorry if it sounds bad.
To quote a great man: "Yeah, yeah, but your scientists were so preoccupied with whether or not they could that they didn't stop to think if they should."
Trying to model bare flesh around something as big as a baggy pair of trousers will never look good, I'm sorry.

it's times like these where i really wish leg bodygroups were a thing for classes. this is a really well-made item that could really benefit for something like that!
others have already pointed out the bulky leg issues - even with all that said, you could probably get away with keeping most of the original set design in-tact, but if you're willing, doing another style where it covers up the medic's base pants model with that cool design you have going on with the shorts already could work, too
it probably wouldn't make much sense given what the set is supposed to be, but it may be something to consider, because everything here is really well-modeled and textured and i like seeing good work like this thrive.
really well done with all obstacles considered, man. again, if only bodygrouped legs were a thing, if only
Just let the pants end where the socks begin? I don't see a reason to force shorts if it doesn't work well. By getting rid of the skin you also avoid the high contrast that you have on the legs right now (bright skin is really distracting). I know Lederhosen are usually shorts but given the limitations regular pants will just work better.
