Almost everyone agrees that the Rift promos were mistakes, though
Two wrongs don't make a right.
That and the Rift items are only 2 out of the 200 or so weapons in the game that help establish the art style (none of which also fit the theme of weird weapons forged out of random chunks of rock/wood.)
So using them as an argument to support your item fitting within TF2 is kind of stupid.
Nitpicking: The brush strokes are all very uniform in both size and shape, making it far less interesting than what it could be.
This is most evident on the "white" parts, while the drum looks more balanced.
You can further push the texture by adding a few scratches to break up the whole blockiness.
Bottomline is, there's more than one brush you can use. :pudge:
I see what you mean but i think it depends a lot on what angle you see it from

This "belt" part feels out of place imo.

Its a mounting strap for keeping the safety tip pressed, seemed like a good alternative to tape, like on the beta nailgun
Here's a thing I guess.

I said tone it down so it's overall color is more brown and less black, not change it to pink. It's going to look like a smear in anything but 1st person in game.

dont worry Square, only counts the items that you think they count, you will always be right. its not like those are more than 10 different designs made by valve recently.
claiming knowing tf2 style but cant accept those, because "those doesnt count", nothing counts then man...

When did I say they don't count?
And In what way do these items make your item any more fitting to the game?

You know i'm surprised they haven't released more packs for some of the none stock weapons, I'm sorta wondering if it's the submitter's responsibility or valve's?

Man for someone that was railing on about not people not taking your criticism and advice, you sure are good at deflecting all criticism away without listening to the majority of people.
How many posts with massive amounts of agrees from respectable contributors and the only disagrees are from you and ikes before you realise your texture isn't very tf2???

just showing those as an example about the "tf2 style", showing that the "70's" style that tf2 used to have is gone now, many of us here has done MANY items that will never fit into the tf2 universe (including you), is that important? no, its just a community item, it can look the way we want, VALVe is the one that will decide if the item gets in or not, do i care if the item gets in the game? no, i do this as a hobby on my freetime, many people liked the item (people that have tons of item inside tf2), other people dont like it, we cant please anyone, the item was not made for anyone, we just wanted to do it and we did.
does the item looking like that affects you? no right? then ignore it after 20 pages of people telling the same as you.
and im expecting tons of comments from harry and the rest of the gang just because i quoted you lol

Okay dude, you keep doing what you're doing.
lol I'm currently on holiday on Scotland right now, walking around town on my phone on my sisters birthday, I was looking at facepunch while waiting somewhere and your post was so stupid that it compelled me to respond. I'm a friend of square yeah, but there's no secret witch hunt, your justifications for bad design are just really stupid
Edit: squares post above me pretty much confirms that we're acting separately lol

You have your opinion about the way you've approached your texture, and that's okay.
If you reply on the criticsm that you've been given, then comment that you can understand the arguments they make and appreciate their help. Yet, if you want to keep moving in your own direction, then make that clear to the opposing party. Don't argue back harshly and open up opportunities to let all kinds of negativity build up.
This applies to multiple people here in the thread.
It's been quite painful the last few pages that people are more focussed on negativity, instead of continuing the initial positive feedback.
OhoOHOh whats this????
guys listen, i understand all critics here but right now because of time we arent able to change many things of the weapon as we would like to, both me and ikes are happy with the end result of the weapon and we are looking someone with cool skills in particle making so we can give this weapon a proper finish touch, we dont have THE time to change the weapon that much, i have a busy job and ikes have to do ike's things.
btw, the weapon looks really different when compile it ingame, what you guys are seeing is just the blender viewport without any light.
so yeah we are looking for a particle guy ASAP. please
Anyway, back to making things. Here have a burger.

I think there's some different understandings of what TF2 style is. It is not a box that says "TF2 Style" on it and literally everything in TF2 gets thrown into this box. Instead, the "TF2 Style" box is where well stylized items such as the default weapons and a good majority of workshop items get put into, while things like the lightning skins and sharpened volcano fragment get put in a "Not TF2 Style but still in TF2" box.
I'm later as ever, but perhaps something a little more constructive.

A couple things;
- Colour choices were all a bit gloomy and dark, which makes the whole thing look washed out and muddy. It won't hurt to brighten things up a little, even if you want to keep the burnt look at the end of the barrel.
- Some details like the screws/bolts/whatever on the metal areas are odd, they're so low poly and there are so many of them that it detracts from everything else going around them. I would either bump up their detail and have fewer of them, or sink them into the metal and move them around a little.
- Some of the metal shapes like on the body are kind a weird too, the smooth flowing curves particularly at the back are pretty boring and do nothing for the silhouette and how lighting affects it's look. Having more angular shapes to contrast with the round barrel and tooth would be more interesting.
- Some proportions are odd, like the inconsistent sizing of the screws, very thin metal parts like the thing holding the tooth on and the metal on the barrel.
- The edge highlights are rough and scrappy, cleaner more deliberate lines around key shapes are generally preferable over scratchy lines.
- A subtle point-light overlay on your texture can go a long way in making it look more interesting in static lighting, and show off shapes better. I always use one at around 15-20% opacity give or take.
- I understand the logic behind the white highlights at the end of the barrel, but I think it makes it too busy.
- Even on areas like the tooth and the trigger-guard where the lighting from bakes is naturally dark and washed out, you can still manually tweak to make more interesting so light appears to hit in a more ideal way in the diffuse.
Beware my dreaded opinions.

now this is the way to give critics, thanks a lot!! im going to study your paintover and i will have to talk with ikes about changing the texture to something more like what you did, i just hope we have the time, thanks a lot!! i really really appreaciate it.

You realize how overused the whole "ah yes TF2 style let me show you X for why TF2's artstyle is dead" thing is right? Logical extreme, but it's like saying because someone robbed a shop already it's okay for you to rob the shop as well.
What gets me is the fact that it seems like whenever anyone says "this item doesn't quite fit the TF2 artstyle" - which is a whole different beast than "theming", btw - someone is always quick to point out weapon skins, or the Dapper Topper, or any number of artstyle/theme-pushing items in defense of their own item.
To go back to criticism of the item itself, I'd agree with Sexy Robot that the current shade/tone of the gun overall doesn't help make it pop out/easily noticeable in the hand.
i may do some changes in the texture following that overpaint just for the sake of learning and progressing, but Compiling it to the actual model is not in my hands i will have to talk with ikes.

Speaking from experience, it can be really off-putting to have to nearly remake an item from scratch, especially when you're so close to finishing it.
Not really defending it - it's easy to just tell someone they should redo an item from an outside perspective - but I can't blame them

but even so, you have to understand that if things don't work then you have to come to a compromise and make the arrangements needed.
Iunno if perrryz is working on this still or if he's busy with some other stuff, but if anyone's interested I have an old airforce pilot pyro concept that I'm thinking of putting back up:
