Shitty ass heavy pith helmet that I probably haven't spent enough time on, but I think it looks pretty ok as is. I would add a buckle to the leather band, but I don't have the tris for it.

I think the mesh flow on the glasses is messed up and not super clean, so the shading and form is kinda funky. Try redoing that bit of the hat and i feel itll be a much stronger item (add an envmap too).

I'd probably just unwrap the semicircle bit as a whole, and then edit/ deform the UV until it looks even.

what ive done for stuff like that (cuz i like being lazy) is to get the pattern, make a super ugly UV of where i want the pattern appear, and bake it onto a much more normal UV
might be too inefficient for something as simple as that, but i like the control it gives over where ur pattern appears, esp for simple stuff like that, also avoids some of the worse warping that can appear
also lets you detail it further on a simpler uv rather than juggling several diff sections

Depends on your method. I UV map before I start rigging as it helps me prolong the innivertable hell known as rigging.

Rigged parts, especially moving parts,are usually moved away from the main model when baking AO, so it would probably be a good Idea to rig first so that you know which bits to bake separately.
