• Major Update Speculation V33 - Tomorrow For Sure

Finding a quick game has ironically never been tougher or as stress inducing. Finding a casual mode game has been draining.
Can we hope for slightly more regular Balance Updates with comp out?
While I agree with the notion that just flaut-out removing the old type of Valve servers and QP experience while trying to force players to commit to an entire match and no leaving or joining mid-game even in a supposedly Casual mode was a dumb, shortsighted move that might damage the game dramatically in the coming weeks...
The issue with adding leaving to casual is at that point... what's the difference between casual and quick play besides the inability to pick your map directly? People can come and go as they please, and I guess they'd get points for it and stuff, but ultimately, it's just getting into a game with less options than the similar mode from before.
Ned_ballad's underestimating how gradual and driven by the default effect the transition from mostly community to mostly Valve servers has been.
I think it was gradual for awhile, but as soon as Valve servers became the default it was basically an instant change. Quick Play has only been around for a few years, and Valve servers as the default has been around even less.
He also conveniently overlooks what is probably their most glaring problem for me that some of you have failed to mention. TF2 being F2P, having questionable player retention and thus a huge turnover of newbies, kids and extremely casual players that seem like they play once or twice a week and ave very little FPS experience means that when you put everybody into the same type of generic servers, the demographics are such that 95% of the time you're gonna have teams with extremely green, unreliable teammates that seem to never really learn or be willing to actually help and mind their teammates/objectives.
I guess I just don't mind playing with them. My brother who is 9 years younger than me, used to play TF2 with me all the time when he was like 10 years old. So I don't mind kids playing, and just mute them. I generally just mess around, so even if I'm better than players on the servers, I usually hold back a bit unless someone else on the server joined to level their stranges or something, then I focus on them almost exclusively so everyone else can enjoy not dying every 20 seconds by a Sniper whose too good for the server. I find that sort of gameplay to be pretty fun. Nothing like taunting in front of some hot shot sniper with his fancy unusuals who was bragging the entire time, while wearing a full community sparkle load out (which I only pull out when said situation happens).
We can argue about aspects like customization, a sense of community, convenience and so on, but I can absolutely vouch that, outside some rare Process or Badwater Valve server on late evenings, expecting to play in a game with 20+ people on the server that seem to at least somewhat know what they're doing, being both good opposition and decent teammates, was a pipe dream on Valve servers.
I don't really care much that my team is good or bad. I just hop around servers until I hit one that has scores that are fairly close and play from there.
Call me elitistic, but even though I've been playing Valve servers a lot in the past year or more, I'm always astounded how much more of a intense and higher-level experience in terms of average skill/trying at least somewhat while having fun some of the rare good community servers are on evenings.
I don't really enjoy high skill game play. I mostly play all single player games on easy, and TF2 is basically the only game I actually play multiplayer for, other games I just play against bots because I don't like playing with other people. For example, I can sit and beat up low level CPUs in Smash for hours and have a blast, while other people would fall asleep doing that. I stopped playing Dota 2 this year because it was eating up too much of my time, and I just didn't like the stress of playing.
An interesting tidbit - not being able to get a game of Casual MM for 30+ minutes this morning, I joined a random Spanish community server that was actually full of mostly Spanish guys at 9.00 am - obviously because of the new update controversy and because it was running the 3 new maps. I coulnd't understand anything of what they were joking and talking about in allchat, obviously, but the sense of community and the fact that pretty much everyone on the server was a capable teammate and capable opponent, trying to do their best even with weird loadouts while being jovial and chatting and not being even close to the 'dirty tryhard' stereotype that so many people see in their prejudiced minds...
Maybe because I'm so active in TF2 forums like Reddit and here, that I don't really notice much of a community aspect in servers. Sometimes I'll play with people who are cool, but then they sign off, or I do, and they're just a pleasant memory, as I have no intention of ever getting closer to them. I'm not a particularly social person.
I respect Ned's arguments, there's truth to a lot of that, I'm just baffled that a guy with 10 years of experience that used to be a big part of the TF2 forums/communities would only see the positives in Quickplay/Valve server dominance from recent years.
Despite playing the game for almost 10 years and being a member of the community for about that much, I'm only sort of mediocre at the game, and I'm super casual. I've had a lot of really bad experiences with community servers, enough that I've basically sworn them away. I never found a server I ever actually liked, I just played them because the ping was good and they only mildly annoyed me with server stuff. I find a site posting their site in chat to be annoying, for reference, so I have a fairly low tolerance for this sort of stuff.
Are you telling me that you find the anonymous, random mediocrity of the ''play random games with a random team of 5 kids or total newbies, 2 AFK guys, 2 friendlies and a max of 3 guys that have experience and have to do most of the carrying game in, game out'' Valve server experience to be the 'soul' of modern TF2? Is this what's good enough as long as searching for servers is more convenient?
TF2 is a very casual game, and has gotten really silly over the last few years. I've completely embraced the silliness, and am no stranger to participating in dance parties, and hunting party poopers down with a vengeance if they bother it. You won't ever see me play friendly heavy or anything, but I'm not going to bother them, and usually they get a high five or something if the area is convenient and not dangerous. I come from a slightly weird perspective, being a player for so long, but being super casual about the game. I'm no stranger to hopping in a server, blowing a few people up, and quitting the entire game in one life. I also value convenience a ton, more than many people probably like.
My problem with casual mode is the simple fact that pubs were always a clusterfuck. You would have a shitty team, you would get rolled, you would roll. And hell, i would still have fun because i wouldn't take everything so damn seriously. How can i play market gardener or melee heavy or anything different? I am glad for comp, but don't make casuals ranked or have to wait for 10 hours to get to a game. let me search for my games again.
To gain points for a side, you need to gain points on a valve server. If you can create a bot that can join matchmaking servers and gain points automatically, you pretty much deserve those points
Queue up for matchmaking with a simple bot that always goes heavy and has a sandvich equipped. Push it next to the spawn cabinet and make it swap to weapon slot 2. Damage self with boston basher while bot mashes +mouse2. Wow that's hard. The worst part of that is that your team can't even kick you for hogging 2 player slots to be a fuckhead.
A good casual match with 12 europeans vs 12 europeans on a Dubai server, all with 200-400 ping y
Queue up for matchmaking with a simple bot that always goes pyro and has a detonator equipped. I got a match in Hong Kong the average ping was around 250ping almost all of the team left after we won stage 3, leading 5 people to defend against 9 we still won, somehow

It may not be hard to do, but it requires spending money for new accounts and there's no guarantee Valve couldn't catch on and stop it.
Toyko server, I'm in Denmark, great job matchmaking, you're doing great.
I'm in Chile. Wait for 10 min. Server of Luxembourg with 240 ping.
No one left community servers in droves for Quickplay. Community servers started to languish once their primary source of new blood dried out after 2014, since the dimwits Valve servers typically subsist on failed to realize you could tick a little box. As for customizability, it extends beyond respawn timers. Random crits, weapon spread, damage spread, and other gameplay affecting cvars were open for server managers to activate or deactivate depending on community demand, which isn't something Valve servers provided at all.
Or how about sv_pure 0. Can't believe nobody's mentioned that. This is probably their best shot at actually seriously hurting the game. First they slowly destroy community servers with Quickplay, and then they remove all Valve servers in an instant with no replacement. It left everyone who relied on the Valve servers stranded, and if it remains this way, I actually expect the playercount to go down rapidly.
I'm having fun with 6v6 mode. Spy is actually a lot more effective than I expected. I didn't have any high expectations for the update so I'm pleased, I just wish there were new weapon skins.
I have to say I'm really pleased with the optimizations. Just to test it, I got on a server that loads the game with tons of shitty resource eating mods, and it still ran buttery smooth. No hitching, nothing. Probably the best part of this update so far IMO.
I played 3 games in casual right now and honestly, it's really damn fun. People actually do what they're supposed to do most of the time, unlike my experience on valve pubs.
I amazed more people aren't voting heavy after the nonsensical nerfs he received to his already lousy weapons. This whole update has a big "what the hell is going on" feeling
Toyko server, I'm in Denmark, great job matchmaking, you're doing great.
Funny thing is that there is actually a command that you can set so it never places you in a server where you'll have over say 100 ping, they just haven't added it to the menu or anything. Oh, and here it is: tf_matchmaking_ping_a 100 tf_matchmaking_ping_b 100 tf_matchmaking_ping_c 100
I laughed my ass off when my engi said something like "What? I cant carry this team alone"
Few of my thoughts after about ten games on comp: - If you main Medic you're gonna have a bad time. Healer class cannot have the rank counted the same any other class do. - There have to be put class restrictions in place. Valve refused to add Highlander to the game turning 6v6 into clusterfuck. Don't mind me, sure there's a chance of winning with two engies, one sniper, spy and medic, why the fuck not. Of course there are situations (not entire matches) where these classes are incredibly useful. But only if you know what you're doing. They should be allowed on higher ranks. - People abandoning the match in the warm-up ends the game basically, and there we go to 30 minutes of waiting. That's unacceptable. - Even losing is fun when you have a team of people who know what they're doing. Stomping is boring, getting stomped is rage-inducing. But when the game is more or less even and lasts longer than 5 minutes it's really fun. But so far it's almost impossible to have such game. It's a mystery whether this will pass in time, or maybe on higher levels that's a norm. But if it's the latter, go to the point one about medic mains.
I have been queuing for 15 minutes now Has there ever been an update that they've proper prepared the servers for
11 stress tests werent just enough
I actually love this update so far, and I really wanna figure out that passtime secret. As for comp and stuff, just gives me more reasons to get into that type of gameplay.
Rank is actually counted based on k/d? Shiet, I might just spam spy all the time and go for easy backstabs, no matter win/loss.
"Bug"
Those tooltips are community written, very well could have been an unintended feature that the community assumed was intentional.
11 stress tests werent just enough
Stress tests dont do anything if they're just using small community samples. In every other stress test I've seen, the entire point of it is to push the servers hard hard as you can. The stress tests valve did didn't really do that, especially after the passes got handed out.
When i play tf2 after the update i have 25 ping and over 100fps but i still have the most lag ive ever seen. what causes lag aside from your fps and ping? pls and thanks so i can fix this
Well, as of now am not thrilled with the update; I havnt been able to play a single comp match, Pubs are destroyed, and not fun anymore, The war is nice, comic was cool, None of the taunts are that great, Pass time is fine, And no skins or cosmetics, I wish valve had added these instead of screwing up pubs
[img_thumb]http://i.imgur.com/Wa5KoU2.png[/img_thumb] [img_thumb]http://i.imgur.com/SUXgKSw.png[/img_thumb] While I was waiting for the GC to come back up I did these. I know they're kind of shit but I thought someone might like them.
