While I'd be fine if they brought back quick-play as long as casual matchmaking stayed in. I must admit I feel this could be a good push to get good community servers back up and running as well with it gone.
That's really the only thing I could think of that could benefit from Quick-Play being gone.
When you found a good one, it was a good way to play with people regularly that you could enjoy interacting with over and over and eventually get better.
Or find ones that support your way of play better, for those people who preferred doing things like going friendly and what not.
Either way though, I'm content ATM. Only time will tell right?

Also I just noticed that there's a chance of a hat being both Strange and Unusual. Wonder how that's gonna affect the economy.
The problem with people leaving in casual could be solved by giving players a reward to play for. Give people a random craft hat for every third game they complete from start to finish, for instance.
There is no problem with people leaving in casual, the problem is that there's a bug causing people to not fill in when a person leaves. Once that is fixed everything will be fine.

If you email eric he'll tell you if he's sent it to the TF team, and an eric endorsement pretty much means it's getting in. If you email it to the TF team you'll never even know if they read it, or it ended up in their spam box.

I'm probably days late with this, but I haven't see anyone discussing it much - are Asteroid and Cactus Canyon dead for good now, or just removed from Valve server rotations temporarily, waiting to be finished/released at some later date?
After that easter egg tease in Powerhouse (an entire year ago), I really didn't think that 12 months later Asteroid still wouldn't be released.
I hope they prepared both major updates for Pyro and Heavy, and the update finalising WAR! will also be 2 day update (1st day is the class that won, 2nd is class that lost)
Then again, those are just hopes

Last we heard from Fr0z3nr (one of the map makers from Snowplow) he was told by Valve that they were waiting for the right update to release Asteroid and CC, but that was back in November. I find it hard to believe they'll never release them but you never know.

Leaving Players being filled in by other players wont fix the issue of people "giving up" and leaving when they are getting slightly stomped, I really believe there should be a reward like in CS:GO for playing Comp, or even Casual.
It doesn't have to be large, hell, it could be a hat which gets bigger the higher your rank, just something
to keep players playing when the odds are against em.
thoughts on casual matchmaking
-Stopwatch mode for payload/attack defense maps. Having whichever team caps the final point earlier be the winner is fine, assuming both teams do cap the final point. But ending games at the first CP because the first attacking team capped nothing is stupid as hell. Just have the entire map be played and use stopwatch rules for tiebreakers.
-After every match, the server disbands and everyone is sent back to matchmaking. Why? Why not offer a choice to search for a new match, continue with the current 'party' or disconnect? Why make everyone search for another match? No-one likes waiting to be matched into a server especially after a 5 minute wait for a one sided, 3 minute game.
-Have some kind of 'would you like to volunteer for the undermanned enemy team' prompt and votescramble to make up for no autobalance. No-one gets put on a different team unless they're either fine with it, or the majority vote is fine with it.
Do we know when the war ends?

There's conflicting reports whether the XP bar affects matchmaking.
If there is skill-based matchmaking, it must be bugged or overwhelmed with level ones everywhere.
If there is no skill-based matchmaking, then all these Casual games are completely random despite the claim of "an unranked 12v12 game with players of similar skill".

One of the main problems with balance/enjoyability of pubs is stacking certain classes. Specifically, stacking loads of non-shield Demos and Soldiers with a few Medics, or loads of Engineers on defense. Heavy-Medic combos, despite the nerfs to Heavy, are still very efficient at plowing through unorganized teams as well. It's the exact opposite ot stacking loads of terrible Snipers or useless Spies, or too many clueless Engineers when trying to attack, which leads to most teams with that setup getting rolled badly or totally unable to actually attack an objective.
However, whenever anyone's suggested class limits, the proponents of 'fun, freedom and diversity' (perhaps people like you?) have been totally against it. It's an absolute truth that some classes just stack way better than others in pubs, and they can actually steamroll most teams easily with the right class+Medic combos, which kindagoes against the game's premise of 'a diverse and well-rounded team with various roles should usually win'.
But should we balance Demos and Soliders with the idea of always having 4+ of them on one team in mind? You can't possibly nerf powerclass stacking without making said classes much, much weaker individually, which would mean decent Scouts would shit all over them in that case. Not to mention that a greatly nerfed Demo/Soldier that only become strong in large numbers with loads of explosive spamming would individually have a much tougher time dealing with Sentries. And I sure as hell don't want Sentry stacking to be more effective than it is, the two explosive classes are the main thing countering that.
I don't play competitive at all, but the Love and War sticky nerf was far from ideal as it just meant that defense in TF2 in general just got bolstered. It's already easier in pubs to just hide behind a wall of Sentries and have your Heavies/Demos/Soldiers just spam narrow entrances into an area you're defending than it is to actually try and push through.

This needs to be a thing. My friend hasn't played TF2 in a while and I suggested we should play a match. We got matched against a way better team that just rolled us (also acting like complete dicks when I called out the lack of balance between the teams). Nothing feels worse when you're stuck in a team that's just way worse than the enemies. I can't even imagine being penalized for wanting to leave a stomp fest casual game.
