Major Update Speculation V31: Gamechanging Edition
Theres not really a whole lot to "speculate" anymore.
Updates just sorta happen now, Valve doesn't really hype or tease them in the slightest.
And if its a community update we practically already know whats coming.
Everyone (especially Facepunch) turning into super sleuths and trying to figure out the most bizarre things like "okay why is bread dropping?" was one of the best parts of the community for me. It was often funniest and most fun hype moments I've ever had in any community, gaming or otherwise. It was like that feeling as a kid when you're counting down until Christmas and shaking every box.
To see it go the way of double drop week and so many other things Valve has just dropped over the years is just sad.
Was the last update they placed some sneaky pages and coded nonsense the Invasion update, or am I mistaken with the Love and War?
Because if I recall, they don't really hide anything for players to find and get hyped for anymore.
(Not counting the code people find on every update)
Someone at Valve already talked about this topic before. If they have something ARG worthy, then they'll do one. I can't quote exactly, since I don't remember who said it. For instance, Expiration Date was something that could take a little build up, so we got the teleporter breads and the countdown. There wasn't anything for Gun Mettle or Tough Break, since nothing too major happened in those besides skins. They can't just hype up nothing.

I don't know, this thread tends to manage it a lot of the time.
Spy vs engie is still being talked about today? Can someone remind me of what it was supposed to be and what we got to prove it ?

We have no idea what it was "supposed" to be, but there have been lines added in over the last two years referencing "Spy Vs Engineer" - some of which being number trackers for kills, such as the original Soldier vs Demo war.
Most of these lines and references have been removed now, but people are still hopeful.

Like what Jetamo said, the code that referred to Spy v Engie makes it seem like it was planned to be a WAR! type update like the soldier vs demo one a while back. I think most people today just came to a general agreement that a large amount of the changes and additions that were planned for Spy v Engie were put into Gun Mettle due to a bit of the focus given to the classes in terms of changes.
I think the reason why it is still talked about right now is because a change in the code of the main menu referenced the Spy v Engie war in one of the recent patches, but it got removed soon after if IIRC.
Maybe they did Gun Mettle and Tough Break as a test to see if people would buy campaigns and contracts before going all the way with it in Spy vs Engie/a bigger update later
I'm surprised we haven't had a weapon skin section added to the workshop yet. I thought that Valve would relish any opportunity to put even less work into an update themselves.
I'd love to see a proper spy v. engineer update. Or failing that, something with the heavy. I don't think he had a proper update but I could be wrong.

They can either spend ~5 minutes on a repeating texture or two per gun (so like a couple hours per year at this rate) and get 100% of the profits, or have some bozo do it for them and get 75%. I don't think you need to be a businessman to figure out which is the smarter option.

This is silly, if they were testing the waters Gun Mettle would've been enough.

True. I was mostly hoping we'd get some nice community skins. A lot of the ones I've seen on the workshop are nice, while I find most of the Valve ones hideous.

Heavy vs Medic
Heavy gets a self-regen secondary, Medic gets a primary that can heal all of his health if he stops to consume part of it.

He had A Heavy Update but I would be completely fine with an update centered around him, especially if it added new weapons that weren't food or expanded on his character/his character's intelligence a bit more

I'd love a heavy-centered update that actually talked about how he wasn't this big gun wielding dumbass like everyone thinks, For being the official "face" of team fortress 2, he's barely been getting any attention in the last 2-3 years that haven't been nerfs to his core gameplay or crappy hats.
I'd be okay with a new food item, but I feel a new shotgun would be the best considering he only has two including stock
I don't know if a WAR update is really what the game needs, I feel like while it was great for demo and soldier, no other classes really have the same versatility and similar gameplay without countering each-other outright to make for a decently balanced WAR. I guess spy and engi would be the best that we have, because both have powerful tools to counter each other, but I still can't see it being anywhere near as fun as demo and soldier fights. I think there are better ways to design updates than copying that format for other classes.

well technically he also has the Panic Attack

Excited for the new update!

Why is that button showing up in the first place
Who are you
well technically he also has the Panic Attack
I mean, is the panic attack really a shotgun at this point considering how useless it is to every other choice every other shotgun class has?

If we're talking about useless shotguns you might as well discount Heavy's whole arsenal. Panic attack is okay on engi though if you know how to use it.
It's not even good on Engineer. Any context that you would use the Panic Attack, the Frontier Justice and Widowmaker just outclass and it doesn't have the utility or clipsize of the Rescue Ranger or stock, respectively.
I wish I could use the Frontier Justice more, but I feel like my sentries usually only die after I do, meaning that unless I manually destroy my sentry it's a straight downgrade 70% of the time.

That's kind of the point. Once you get a bunch of kills and know you are going to lose the attrition war to an assault, blow up your sentry when it is at low HP and go ham, and use the ammo they drop for a new sentry once you've killed everyone. The design of the weapon assumes that you aren't wrenching when the sentry is blown up and are instead assisting with your own hitscan.
Bonus points if you do it on a deadlocked CTF map, because you can just roam about sniping people to death with shotgun pellets of doom. (It's actually possible to get multikills with the damn crits because that's how spread out they are)
It also works excellently with the Mini-Sentry.
This is less of a "Major Update," but I speculate Valve will finally realize limited backpack space is a thing of the past. The only problem is backpack expanders and people who spent money to get and/or use them. Simple solution: Give players a cosmetic, similar to the spirit of giving, that counts how many backpack expanders you have used. If you use a backpack expander, the counter will go up. Maybe the cosmetic could literally be a backpack on the characters' backs that expands the more you use them.

On the other hand, if you're not routinely in situations where you fire more than 3 shots at a time, it's actually a straight upgrade. It depends entirely on your playstyle.

It depends on how well you can aim tbh.
