Major Update Speculation V31: Gamechanging Edition
The one thing that does piss me off about the new grade tier system is how inconsistent it is.
All normal hats had yellow names untill now, why do the tiered items need colored names and borders? Couldn't they just add the tier color to the level text, same way the limited hats have yellow text there?
I'll have to agree they could have handled it better. It's odd having an unusual from a set, but not having the border be purple. And having purple bordered items, but they aren't unusual.
On one hand I can see why they did it. It makes the tier of the item very clear, and it's consistent with the other games that have done tiers.
On the other, it has multiple conflicts with the already established color coding of items in the game. If we can make a good complete suggestion on how to improve it all, I'd say there's a good chance the tf team will implement it.
Doctor's Dapper Topper is now confirmed to be receiving an all class update after an announcement from the creator. Needless to say traders have already exploited this to their advantage by hoarding as many Unusual copies as they could, a similar fate seen by Federal Casemakers.
We've come to a point where people are fervently exploiting these situations for their own benefit, and the stakes are increasing in each consecutive updated cosmetic. It should be the responsibility of item contributors to keep these updates under wraps before it gets even more out of hand, because as far as we know Valve could crack down on item updates as this practice becomes more widespread.
[img_thumb]http://i.imgur.com/PdbVUxy.png[/img_thumb]
Question is, how best to combat it? No matter what people will use underhanded methods to get profit, so cracking down on them is extremely difficult.
I'm a suspicious person, so whenever someone reaches out to me to offer on an item, or when I'm about to trade one away, I do some research. Often when someone reaches out out of the blue, it's due to something that has happened, or is about to happen to that item.
Right now the item creator's only real avenue of announcing something is via their workshop page, and who checks those besides the ones looking for profit. Updating a hat to an all class item for a considered addition means the tags on this item gets updated, which anyone can see. Perhaps a bot that watches for these changes and leaves messages on the item's price through item price checking sites? Or a movement to remind and encourage users to check item workshop pages for possible updates before trading?
Does the responsibility for being aware of the value of your items lie with the item creator? What if the item creator is the one looking to make bank on the update?
Tbh I think the Doctor's dapper topper is one of those items that needs to be all class, hopefully he improved the texture too.
Yeah I'm all for an update but kinda frustrated that it was announced publicly instead of being kept private. Now we're facing another situation as we've seen with other hat updates.
The tier system is shit. Everything they have done in the gun mettle update was shit. The skin system was shit. Every CS-GO related mechanics are trash excepted the "Drop gun/Take gun from a death person". Nothing else to say. Skins just don't fit the game. Tier system don't fit the game.
Lol what do you mean skins don't fit the game? They fit as well as any other cosmetic item. Are you really going to tell me that these:

There are bad skins that don't fit the game, sure, but there's nothing at all inherent about the idea of "different gun textures" that somehow doesn't fit TF2.
it almost makes me want to announce the diplomat for all classes, fit it to all the other classes and show screenshots, and never release it. fuck over a bunch of traders with their investments over time.
I'm really bothered by it.

Primrose did that for the Mundee on April Fools. People actually bought em off in masses from the SCM that day.
My issue with turning so many hats all-class - now I admit this is a silly case probably unique to me, but bear with me here - I go for "bad" hats is because I study character design, and it throws off the value of those hats for me as someone who's interested in the ideas of "what went wrong?"
In a game where character design broke new ground back in '07, and then further with character customization (via hats), I find them all interesting case studies in how people don't find a certain thing appealing. Whether it's because it's just not well-modeled, of unappealing color, doesn't stand out compared to other available alternatives, or seems like it just misrepresents what a player feels ideal in representing themselves or the base character, who knows! I just like having them so I can go back, look at them, and think about why so-and-so isn't/wasn't well-liked at the time of its inclusion on a broader scale.
I'm not an illustrator, so admittedly my ability to apply the knowledge is limited... but it's still something fun to chase with all the extra metal I have (disliked cosmetics are cheap!). Turning items all-class instead of their original context kind of throws it all for a loop... are they more appealing now because you can put them on a different class than their original context? Is the Universal Translator a better hat at its core because Scout or Medic can wear it?
I guess I could be placing too much thought into what is ultimately a ploy by unusual traders - and I suppose the content creators themselves, in some cases - to make more money. Maybe at the absolute highest tier of trading, all one cares about is the freedom to put a desired particle effect on any class of their choosing.
I don't have any college papers on the subject or anything of the sort, it's just my own curiosity and confidence in picking "bad" hats for study now being thrown off with this oddball trend I don't think any of us would have ever predicted becoming a thing.
If I had the ability, I'd love to do a bit more looking into the adjusted hats and seeing which classes their owners put said hat on.
A part of me wonders if, one day, Valve is just going to go "you know what? Let's make everything all-class that we can" if this continues to be a thing that sees more key sales and the like happening.
I'd prefer that items be given a grace period before they can't receive any updates that aren't bug-related. Some of these 'updates' make them outright new items altogether, and sometimes the old version is preferable.
Also, new HLDS e-mail
Why is nobody talking about this?
This change will allow us to have a greater level of confidence in game servers, by making it easier to revoke access for bad actors and better tying game servers to their owners. The increased persistence gives us many more opportunities to assign trust to community servers, and to provide them access to features that would otherwise be too open for abuse.
This sounds a lot like the return of community servers to quick play.

That is, a question of player, not valve intended purpose.
Skins are item by themselve and we've got SKINS CASE NOW like COSMETICS CASE were not useful enough for valve. There is nothing to discuss. That system sucks. It's reversed Portal 2 all over again : They are integrating CS:GO hat replacement (skins) into tf2 (like when they tried to make a market out of Portal 2 with item for your bot in coop).
They fit just as worse as those item you shown me. Now, they can do flashy outfit WITH A FLASHY WEAPON.
I REALLY hope the bribing part is false.

lmao thats total bullshit
just gonna quote my reply there:

Quit spreading bullshit. I had intentions to make it all class wayyyyyy before the guy ever met me. At least a good few months. All this trader guy did to me was simply remind me that the hat would look fine on all classes and I was like "shit you're right I should update it". I don't care if he's done a profit with it or not, that's his business. There never was any bribery between him and I.
My only issue with weapon skins (apart that first batch was god awful) is consintency, again.
They had stablished that weapon "skins" were complete remodels ala lugermorph etc, then theres weapon skins. Then theres botkiller skins. Then theres grade tiered weapon skins.
I hadn't played tf2 in a good while and all this stuff is kind of really overwhelming, I can't imagine how it is for new players.

Do it please. Make sure to post on reddit using a throwaway account.
Yeah I saw the comment from the creator. So I'm real glad that it's BS.
thats me btw
and yeah people are fast at assuming. that dude literally just added me because he liked the hat and had a cutesy irl figurine of the soldier with it so i was like "yeah sure i'll add you"
The only item updates I'd like to see in the future is more style related ones where they just ship out intended or new styles. That'd be cool
I think updates like This Should be added, since it fixes stuff etc.
and as I look at the guys profile I see

Holy fuck
Hey, this is actually a pretty nice thing from the mod authors. A nice clean page with good explanation on the change he made. I think every modders should do something like that.

Doesn't stop a sour taste in my mouth from developing knowing that even if a hat looks good on multiple classes there's dozens upon dozens of people who only want it adjusted so they can get a free multi/allclass unusual.
Want it updated because it works well on other classes? Alright. Want it updated because "I want it on all classes" despite it realistically not making much sense? Upsetting..
Do it please. Make sure to post on reddit using a throwaway account.
I already have a dummy spy refit for when I tried that (and failed) lol
On second thought, what if the new Server changes will screw over certain modded-tf2 servers, such as VSH etc. ?
I'm looking at ye old CS:GO community server fiasco.
With all the model updates lately, I wonder if Elbagast's unique rockets could finally get in if it were resubmitted now. Especially with the Air Strike having its own unique rockets.

-scotsman's stovepipe
-professional's panama
-Heavy Duty Rag
-Safe'n'Sound
-Grenadier's softcap
-Hero's Hachimaki
-Infernal Impaler
-Outdoorsman
-fed fighting fedora
all of these would be sick to wear on other classes.
I just hate the negative stigma surrounding the mere discussion of potential item updates because of these rabid profiteers.

Well, i'd say, yes, he could! That's some pretty good rocket there.
And it has been submitted in 2011, so if we don't try, we will never get to see that in game.
I think VALVe should say gtfo to every item update that was intentionally hinted by authors
Make this shit strict, nobody will have any problems with that if he has good intentions
Just don't make them all class. Each class have their own identity, the fedora fit well with the spy behavior and identity. Safe N Sound fit well for the engineer because well.. that running jokes about a workers with headphone working without hearing the funny weird thing happening next to him in every comedy movie?
i made the casemaker all class so i could wave around my small e-peen even more
i made the casemaker all class so i could wave around my small e-peen even more
is this the confession thread?
i made the peak all class cause one of my closest buddies had a wiki cap and I wanted to match his sparkly all class peaked cap
i made the casemaker all class so i could wave around my small e-peen even more
Not to be an ass, but you probably could have worked a bit more on it when making it all-class, rather than just rescaling it side-ways until it stops clipping with the player's head. Just looks weird on most classes when seen from the front...

"He didn't bribe me, he just tipped me ;D"
Also I think the brim should look less like it's made of clay.
I'd just love to see some all class gloves of the sort, I wish we had more cosmetics that made demo sleeveless
Good news, custom gamemodes will not suffer under any restrictions from the future server change.
seriously? It's awesome to see valve giving this game more care and polish even if they are trying to contest another game
