• Major Update Speculation V31: Gamechanging Edition

I think both games can peacefully co-exist. It makes sense that playercounts might be lower across the board in the face of a Brand New Thing(tm), but stuff will normalize soon. I think Valve's a few weeks off yet from dropping the next substantial update. No reason to rush it - might actually do them better to wait and strike when the first wave of people get bored of the Brand New Thing(tm). I'm not sure what Valve's got in mind other than competitive stuff, but one thing they've proven consistently good at are surprises.
Overwatch isn't going to kill TF2. Its survived for this long, I dont see why everyone is being so pessimistic.
I can't think of a single instance when playing soldier in which the reserve shooter's bonus would be better than just shooting a shotgun or a 2nd rocket.
It's useful for enemy rocket jumping soldiers and want to get extra damage on them.
Don't start the two page long Overwatch talk again, please.
Also looking at it, quite a few other games have taken a dip with overwatch coming out. It's not TF2 exclusive.
Why do people constantly propagate this "TF2 is literally dying there are only 3 people left!!!" bullshit when you can easily check the facts yourself in 5 seconds. But hey, looks like the average player count has decreased by a couple thousand in the last couple months. Pack it up, boys, TF2 is literally dead. Time to move on to greener (and overwatchier) pastures.
whoa what happened here
In my opinion, Blizzard was butthurt because of DOta 2, and tried countering it with Heroes of the Storm, wich in my opinion couldn't stand a chance against Dota 2. They even tried sueing Valve for it and failed in the most part. So the gave a TF2-FPS-alike a shot because of that, and yeah, they took a lot of TF2 for Overwatch. I don't get why people say "they are MUCH different" then go into comparing TF2 with it. I HONESTLY think this is some kind of "revenge" for Dota 2, if not I can not comprehend things like the fucking sentry being the fucking same, for example. Anyways, I don't think they will take the whole player base, and seeing how the cosmetics are already crap and out of character (characters worse already than the mercenaries, flashy looks are not everything) and knowing Blizzard tones down everything into mentally handicaped levels of gameplay makes me sure they will fuck up with Overwatch a lot, so TF2 will still be played. Sorry about this, just my opinion, I know it is a bit paranoid thinking a whole company would pull out a "revenge" crap making a whole new IP, but I truly believe it. I will still play TF2 and maybe even Overwatch. Unless some people I am able of playing two and even three games at the same period of my life :v:
whoa what happened here
Tuesday maintenance, same thing with May 3rd
Oh. Well before it would mini-crit anyone who was airborne, so it was at least slightly useful in taking down Scouts who like to jump a lot. But now it only mini-crits targets knocked back by an attack or explosive jumping, so you can't even do that anymore.
had completely forgotten they did that. interesting
It's better if you look at 1 year Lost about 1/3-1/2 its population in the course of a year. The recent stuff is likely due to Overwatch. It staying this way though is a mystery, but I'm sure it chopped a good 1/5-1/4 off TF2 in the future.

Graphs older than three months only show peak players for some reason. SteamDB stores data for each day, so it's more accurate, and there's no drop as you can see: https://steamdb.info/app/440/graphs/

That says nothing about the average playercount. Funnily enough, if you take that exact site and look below the graph at the average playercount, it hasn't fluctuated much from ~46,000-~60,000 players in about a year, except for one month where (I assume) a major update hit.
MUS: My graph is better than yours edition

It still shows a decrease. But hey whatever we can believe what we want and go on with our lives, it doesn't matter at all in the end.
TF2 peaks at 55k since Overwatch came out. In may last year it peaked at ~85k. That's a clear 30k loss no matter how you look at it. That's a 35% loss. I think both games can co-exist but Valve needs to put out regular updates again for that to work.

A lot of other games are also experiencing lower peaks due to overwatch. It's really just because of launch hype.
A lot of other games are also experiencing lower peaks due to overwatch. It's really just because of launch hype.
Nah, it's totally TF2 dying. I mean, the game had a 7 million player peak during open beta, and is one of the most anticipated game releases in history, but TF2 is obviously dying because Valve doesn't care about it anymore and hates us!!!!!!!!
The only thing Overwatch is killing at the moment is Battleborn.
Poor battleborn. That game was basically Dead on Arrival, lol. Launch day for that game at my store was depressing.
after anthony burch, I wouldnt touch anything made by gearbox with a barge pole
after anthony burch, I wouldnt touch anything made by gearbox with a barge pole
I don't think he works there anymore.
I don't think he works there anymore.
gaming is saved

Peaks tend to be higher on weekends, and tf2 peaks at mid 70k on weekends now, in the mid 50k on weekdays.
As for the reserve shooter, I hope they give it back its old stats and give it to Heavy instead of Pyro, that would be fantastic against jumpy scouts in a heavy's face.
As for the reserve shooter, I hope they give it back its old stats and give it to Heavy instead of Pyro, that would be fantastic against jumpy scouts in a heavy's face.
For one I'm glad Reserve "Jump Motherfucker, I Double Dare You" Shooter is gone forever.
As for the reserve shooter, I hope they give it back its old stats and give it to Heavy instead of Pyro, that would be fantastic against jumpy scouts in a heavy's face.
That's...actually a really interesting idea, if anything. Some Heavy secondary that provides him a way of dealing with Scouts or other highly-mobile threats, while giving up his Sandvich. I like it.

[editline]26th May 2016[/editline] Besides, Heavy is supposed to be bad vs Scouts, and I know he's currently bad vs everything but that doesn't mean he's good for random buffs in ways he was never meant to be good at.
