super unpopular opinion ahead
uber update was my favorite. a million new weapons and I would treasure hunt the crafting recipes for days until that glorious moment I got the weapon and spent hours testing it on puppet bots.
Is this an unpopular opinion? I figured it might have people who were fans and who weren't but did people not like it?
I LOVED the Uber Update and I still sadly compare recent updates to it
I love that it picked up some of the sort of 'stragglers' of the Polycount Pack contest, adding in some more of the really good sets from those threads. I will always love the Liberty Launcher and its set just for their aesthetic
I LOVED that it wasn't cosmetic-focused, any cosmetics added were attached to a set of weapons, and overall I REALLY miss sets that had 2-3 weapons and 1-2 cosmetics being added to the game all at once. Not so much their affixes, but ya know...
I even liked Barnblitz, it was a pretty damn fun map that came with the update and everyone was playing it on release
Who DOESN'T love that along with all the weapons, 22 WEAPONS, and their associated cosmetics, TEAM-COLORED PAINTS, a map and other things, they also gave us MEET THE MEDIC? Honestly, probably the best Meet the Team short
I really want another Uber Update. An 'Uber Update 2' could honestly be like the best thing to me if they emulated the first one extremely closely
yknow this situation is kinda like after you brush your teeth and eat something and it tastes kinda off and you don't know what's real anymore
I know EXACTLY what you mean! :v:
Next update super duper fresh leak guys holy shit

Wait... if water tastes like garbage, does that mean garbage tastes like water? Only one way to find out!
yeh but sadly there's this "lets fix everything before new weapons" craze going on even though its not realistically happening so we're in a dead-end

I actually like that, as it gives us viable play styles and we already have a sizable amount of weapons in game - not that I don't want more, but I like having weapons that outlive the novelty of being attached to a new update too in the case of Uber Update and similar quantity over quality updates.

Almost all of the weapons added were terrible. It took years of buffs and rebalances for most of them to be relevant or fun to play against.
Out of the 22 weapons added in the update, only 5 have their original stats.
And how many of the stock weapons have their original stats?
No weapon is ever perfect on release. In fact, no weapon is ever perfect, period. Everything gets buffed or tweaked eventually, so if that's your criteria for determining if something sucks, then pretty much the entire game sucks.
I had to look it up—there were 21 new weapons in the Uber update, not to mention the 6 new paints and many classic cosmetics (I still wear the Desert Marauder and Sultan's Ceremonial even though I got them in 2011-2012).
The last time we got new weapons and it was 3 (Panic Attack/Quickies/Iron Bomber) I thought that was a lot of weapons, god deezy.
People need to realize that the game doesn't need more weapons. it needs better rebalances. We have too many weapons that could easily be revamped from the ground up instead of forcing in new unlocks.

well yes I am absolutely for making bad items good but valve has relentlessly proven over years that they usually either overbuff or just make it worse, AND these rebalances happen between 0-1 times a year and that's just not very healthy.
its less disappointing to just expect nothing and go forward.

it will if we don't speak about it anymore.

Matchmaking provides a legitimate base for rebalance assumptions. They're also in contact with b4nny and probably some sort of testing group on rebalances (iirc they rebalanced the degrease based off of random rants b4nny had about pyro unlocks)
Keep in mind all the previous years of rebalance were balanced around pub play which has no base for balance in the first place after so many unlocks exist
Haven't felt the holy touch of MM upon the guns yet TBH

Don't be an asshole.

What about the Medic? I'd argue the only weapon he has that is imbalanced is the Vita-Saw, and only in competitive play. He could really do with some new tools to mess around with.
Everyone who says we don't need new weapons acts like there are lots of weapons that need tweaks, when some classes like Medic, Spy or Engineer, only have a few weapons at all.
Don't be an asshole.
Just saying, why continue a pointless argument? Doesn't matter anymore since it stopped already.

The Scattergun, Shotgun, Syringe Gun, Medi Gun, Revolver and most of the stock melee weapons have all stayed the same, mechanically, since launch. Plenty of unlocks too, like the Disciplinary Action, and the Overdose have remained untouched. There are lots of weapons in the game right now that function pefectly, don't need updates and hopefully never will.
Aaaaand he's banned again.
Will he ever learn.
Invayysion was a travesty
i actually loved invasion and i really don't think it deserves all the crap it gets
- we got three new maps, which are all a blast to play on
--- koth_probed, which is just a solid king of the hill map
--- arena_byre, which managed to do the impossible and bring back arena mode to valve servers for a while, not to mention being possibly one of the best arena maps in the game
--- pd_watergate, which added an entirely new game mode to the game. i'm honestly amazed by how little fanfare this got on the update page. back in the day, this would've had a whole page to itself, announcing this exciting new game mode and explaining how it works, but just looking at the update page we got, you wouldn't have even known there was a new mode at all. that aside, not only is the mode a lot of fun, but the detailing is fantastic, especially with the ambiance of the massive ship looming overhead and the swarms of UFOs roaming around in the distance. the whole location actually feels alive, and it's always satisfying to see the big ship coming down at the end of the match.
- of course, there was also the reskin of 2fort. sure, in the end it's still 2fort and it has all the same problems that 2fort always had, but i don't think the update creators really had a say in that. it's just a reskin, not an overhaul. besides, the real meat of the update was the three new maps - 2fort was just a bonus, and it's a beautifully detailed bonus at that.
- now this point is a bit more controversial, but personally it's something i actually really liked about the update. crate drops were rare, which meant they were actually worth something on the market at first. you'd get one crate and that would be enough to pay for the whole pass by itself, and if you got any more crates then that's even more free steam money you could put towards a game or something. none of this tough break nonsense where the crates were already near worthless from the beginning.
honestly, the only real problems i've heard about with invasion are that the variety of cosmetics could have been better, and that the infrequent crate drops made it harder to unbox, but both of those are pretty inconsequential compared to the actual gameplay content we got, and certainly not enough to bring down the entire update on their own.
I suppose the problem I had with Invasion was that I just didn't like the theme. Same with Robotic Boogaloo, I thought that most of the alien and robotic cosmetics were ill-fitting. You couldn't wear most of the robot hats with anything because they didn't match anything else in the game. The only ones I really own are the Battery Canteens for MvM, and the robot spy voodoo doll because it's an accessory, not a hat.
I liked EOTL, however, as the theme was just "winter". I own a lot of the cosmetics from that update because they look good with a lot of what's already in the game. I'm not that excited about the Iron Gauntlet or Mayann updates for the same reason, but I'm cautiously optimistic about Ye Olde Workshoppe, since we already have Medieval Mode and a lot of medieval cosmetics.
I was hoping with boogaloo that they would have a mission that used the robot hats.
I still find the Spectral Halloween Special (Halloween 2012) to be my favorite Update in general.
I find it one of the most creative and entertaining TF2 updates to this day, from Halloween Spells to Merasmus' awaited introduction.
Oh god, remember when we saw the femenine puppet hands and everybody was hyped for a new character, and it was just fucking merasmus
Oh god, remember when we saw the femenine puppet hands and everybody was hyped for a new character, and it was just fucking merasmus
Kind of great how the entire thread thought it was a new female character and it turned out to be Merasmus. That just fits perfectly with the comics.
I remember buying like 20 ToD Tickets because "Theres no way they will ship mvm-styled hats without a new mvm mission, right?"
I was wrong :V - not that they promised a new one anyways, I just expected it.

Same here, wasn't one of the requirements on the hats that it should fit a robot's head? Kinda weird they didn't take advantage of that.

It was, and I myself as a contributor was expecting that, new MvM tours with our items shipped through them. Oh well :v:
No, the comics make you think that someone will have to solve a problem himself and then Soldier happens and does something amazingly random and funny.
Except that everyone except the TF2 mercs (with Pauling since they told her) seem to mistake Merasmus for a woman.

Behind the rose-colored glasses, I remember people ranting about how the Uber Update weapons were poorly balanced.
At release: Tomislav, Liberty Launcher, Soda Popper, Splendid Screen, and Enforcer.
Most of the weapons in the Uber Update were tweaked anyway in the intervening years.
I had to look it up—there were 21 new weapons in the Uber update, not to mention the 6 new paints and many classic cosmetics (I still wear the Desert Marauder and Sultan's Ceremonial even though I got them in 2011-2012).

I haven't changed my Soldier cosmetic loadout in nearly half a decade.
Sometimes I try new cosmetics, but I always end up at the Kringle Collection, FDU and Wiki Cap. Haven't really found any other combination I like as much, or maybe I'm just so used to using the items together, Soldier looks "weird" to me without them.
The Uber Update added a ton of filler weapons that still, to this day, aren't properly balanced.
