Major Update Speculation V31: Gamechanging Edition

When I logged on to TF2 the other day, my contracts were disabled. I'm fairly sure it's over?
I kinda wish Valve didn't treat tf2 the way I treat my homework assignments.
I think that's the best metaphor for the way TF2 is handled by Valve I've ever read.
tf2 updated for like 10 min and nobody talks about it? I'm impressed
Update just came, Tough Break is now officially over.
Hope we can reduce the total number of Paulings on the blog page now.

It also changed the description of the All-Father to remove the "Heavy and Soldier specific" bit.

I have to be honest I have little hope this will happen anytime soon, and even when it does I doubt it will have nearly as much substance as the original War. There'll be a comic if we're lucky, new engineer and spy themed skins, about 12 tiered hats and if we're really lucky a new weapon or two that will likely be negligible in terms of the effect it has on the game as a whole. And I say that because of matchmaking, mostly. Not only is it pretty much all Valve is concerning themselves with as of now (making the release of a War update almost guaranteed to not come until after matchmaking releases officially) but in Valve's forlorn effort to rebalance everything to work around 6s, it's incredibly unlikely they'd introduce 7 new gamechanging weapons in a single update because of how much it would effect the way that the game plays. Any weapons the update would bring (if any at all) would likely be akin to the holiday 2014 weapons on release in that they are underwhelming sidegrades that offer no real reason to be used over stocks or other choices. Not to mention it'd likely be a paid update where you have to buy a campaign pass, and even then it would probably be just more contracts rather than anything like the War kill counter.
I could be wrong (and I hope I am) but to be honest I just don't see much really new stuff like we had in the past. The future is campaigns and community updates, the former featuring maps, skins, passes, contracts and rebalances and the latter featuring maps, hats, reskins and passes. I don't foresee any real deviation from this going forward, except maybe in the case of Matchmaking's official release, which considering all of the issues to still iron out, is probably a long way off.
Construct-an-aimbot man vs countered-by-awareness man.
I wonder who will win.

Can this meme die already?
Can this meme die already?
It will when it stops being true. Every major update since Gunmettle has had a pass and only Halloween's was free.
i'm gonna be pessimistic and say it's probably a scrapped thing that just got left in the non-campaign main menu template by accident somehow, since no one at valve has had any reason to actually look at it in the last several months
i'd love to be proven wrong though
Anyone have any pics of the backround it refers to?

Okay, so you have to buy a pass to... do what, exactly? Get cosmetics? Yes, that's the case with them most of the time. Is it not enough that you can play the maps for free?

B-b-but it was cancelled because Spy and Engie were listed as the first two classes on the Gun Mettle weapon balancing update page! It was a left-over reference to the update being cancelled!
What, this finally happening? Or is this just another nudge towards it
It's probably happening. If you watch the Steam Dev days talk about games as services with Robin Walker he talks about how they know the community will look at the changes for patch they ship so there's no doubt some of the stuff they put in patches is deliberately put in there. The full video is actually a very interesting watch for anyone who posts here, since it's about how Valve handles the updates for games as services like TF2.
I still think we'll get Cactus Canyon and Asteroid as part of Spy vs Engie. Valve must be holding them back for a specific update, if not why else haven't they shipped them when they could have shipped them with Gun Mettle or Tough Break?
Don't forget the Christmas 2013 update, which added the first teasers for Cactus Canyon and Asteroid also had a class bulletin board, which was probably intended to be a teaser for Spy vs Engie. I'm guessing Spy vs Engie has just taken much longer than anticipated, but the fact this update contained a reference to it (and so did the tough break update) shows Valve still intends to release it.
Holy shit it's happening!? can't wait for Summer when it comes out probably
So we have the possibility of either the matchmaking update or spy vs engie coming around that time, unless one is sooner or later, or they're merged.

I could See asteroid being part but not the Canyon (sadly but atleast asteroid is great)
I almost totally forgot about asteroid and cactus canyon.
Hope they get released, asteroid's a great looking map and I really wanna see it fully textured.
So Spy v Engi Confirmed? Hopefully we might actually get a multi-day update...
Okay, so you have to buy a pass to... do what, exactly? Get cosmetics? Yes, that's the case with them most of the time.
To complete contracts, which are gameplay content. You play differently when you have a contract because it gives you different objectives to do, and they do offer something more than just cosmetics upon completion. It's a bit like MvM actually. Imagine if bootcamp had never existed and the only way to play missions is to pay for tickets and get cosmetic rewards at the end. That's essentially what Valve did with contracts, because you have no option to simply do them and not get any rewards.
Personally I think having passes that give you contracts with skin rewards is fine, but having them be the only way to do contracts basically goes in the face of what Valve set forward to do once the game went free to play, that being offer the ability to freely access any and all gameplay content and only monetize cosmetics. If bootcamp had never existed, then you would in fact have to buy a pass to play any missions and get cosmetics. Same principle can be applied to having to buy a campaign pass to access contracts.

Why wouldn't Cactus Canyon not be part of it. They were both teased at the same time with the Christmas 2013 update and released as part of the same update? Seems pretty likely they would be released together.

Froz3nr actually visited Valve late last year and was told by someone on the TF2 team that they were waiting for the right time to release them.
they probably just reverted the file to an old version..
