I remember the days before stupid achievements (you jumped twice, achievement! You got an achievement, achievement!), item drops, idling etc etc etc existed. The game was so much better back then, wish they'd just stuck to bug fixes and map updates. Sometimes simpler really is better.
I'm deathly curious to see what else comes of this 'version 0' stuff, oh the memories. I would love nothing more than for Valve to create a proper official 'Classic' TF2 mode that servers could run...
The original TF2 shipped with achievements.
I know this thread is kinda of dead but has anybody found texture or model for the crowbar?
I know this thread is kinda of dead but has anybody found texture or model for the crowbar?
The crowbar textures in V0 are just the ones from TFC.
The crowbar textures in V0 are just the ones from TFC.
Looking at that, the texture and model is simply that of the HL1 model.
Oh man
I wish i could have experienced TF2 when it was the good old times. Without hats. BUT NO. I started playing the game in February 2012 :(

I'm positive there are servers that don't allow any items other than stock.
I remember seeing my first hat in-game back in '09 (iirc). I was on a server that was running one of those "orange" maps with the dev textures everywhere. This was before I had even heard that hats had been added.
My reaction was something along the lines of, "Woah, I didn't know they added extra hats! That one looks so cool! :O"
The Sniper Vs. Spy update was the best update. I wish I had played more TF2 back then.
I'd do anything to have TF2 during the Engineer update but without any hats added. I wish Valve would release a separate client that people can use to do that. TF2 Beta just doesn't cut it.
The Engineer Update was where I became disenchanted with TF2, once it was revealed the whole wrench system was dropping them on specific times. Being able to move buildings was nice, but that whole thing made me just stop caring about the whole item system in general.

Over the years the parts of me that love TF2 have turned more and more bitter.
I wish I had played more TF2 back then.
Same here, though it was hardly physically possible since I played the shit out of TF2 at that time.

I think whenever you start playing is the best time, might not have been any better then. But then again, I wish I played more when I joined shortly like 2 days after the engy update. Back when hats were more rare. I enjoyed playing rounds of dustbowl with 16 engineers on red. Just avoid nighteam, saigns, 24/7 2forts and traders like the plague and you'll be good.
Over the years the parts of me that love TF2 have turned more and more bitter.
This too, I find myself putting voice_enable 0 in console more often finding voice chat not as appealing. Playing the classes that I'm good at is no longer very interesting.
People are actually saying no-one would play TF2 without updates? Fucking seriously? How many updates does Counter Strike get? CS1.6, that is. And how many people play it? The game is played to this day because it's fun and people enjoy it. If you honestly think TF2 wouldn't survive without updates, you are essentially saying TF2 is a shit game that needs a constant flow of content for anyone to be bothered playing it.
I mean, god damn. You used to be able to release a game and then be done with it, and have people play the game for years after that via player made content etc. Now? You guys doubt that TF2 would even make it a couple of years without items and shit. God damn.

How many people play TFC? HL2:DM? HL:DM? Of course people play it. That's not what people are saying. The community would have died out, most certainly. There wouldn't be nearly as many people playing without 5 years of constant support.

It doesn't matter how good a game is, it'll be replaced quickly without new content.

Those games would've all been played for years after release, and there are still servers for 'em (ever logged into Day of Defeat recently?). With a decent SDK I bet TF2 would've done just fine.
Of course I won't argue that virtual hats and a store are the reason for it's survival today.

Talking about HLDM, Alfred really did kill it this time since he for some reason it was a good idea to remove _special in every GoldSrc game when the actual issue was only in TFC.

Alfred?
Did anyone manage to launch this?

Gotta love that fix they did for teleporters being sapped.
The Level 3 buildings didn't exist in the original version right?

nope, just sentry
lets do a quick recap of how tf2 was released:
-no lvl 3 dispensers/teleporters, just sentry
-spies couldnt regen the invis watch with ammo boxes/metal
-backstab had a slow animation before confirming the backstab, spy missed alot of backstabs thanks to that
-facestab were much worse
-demoman and soldier had more reserve ammo on their weapons, could spam much more without worring about
-demoman and soldier took less selfdamage when not rocket/sticky jumping
-Pyro was a piece of shit, no airblast, huge falloff damage, awful hit detection
-heavys minigun spread cone was huge compared to what is today
-sticky did more damage
-crits were more common.

Actually, I disagree, especially for the reasons posted above. During times when TF2 did have update-less droughts, I grew tired of it, especially before the item system. You can only replay the same maps with the same limited amount of weapons and tactics so many times before it becomes boring. Can you imagine being a Pyro-only player and not having airblast? Can you imagine playing like that for years, especially with the old stats where Pyro was sorely underpowered? Or how about Spy or Engie, who increasingly became harder to play since people stopped being surprised by their tricks after a while? The update that gave Spy the ability to replenish cloak and Engie the ability to upgrade Dispensers was a huge godsend.
Now TF2 has so many included maps and so many weapons and tactics that I'm still getting the hang of some of the newer ones. It's also much more balanced than it once was, meaning it's a lot more playable and most of all fun. The cosmetic system keeps me busy and interested even when I grow tired of the gameplay. Anyone saying that the item system was a bad idea is kidding themself. Not only does it keep the game interesting outside of the main game itself, but it also keeps TF2 funded and thus updated. I really don't think TF2 would be anywhere near what it is today if Valve didn't add microtransactions to it. People hate microtransactions because of how other companies abuse it, but the way Valve used it was fair and smart. It definitely improved the game.
A lot of people are nostalgic for the old TF2 and I can see where they're coming from because I have a lot of good memories with it too, but you really have to take a step back and weigh the pros and cons. TF2 back then was a much simpler game with balance issues and an admittedly repetitive and increasingly bland style back when all we had were several official maps and most custom maps using the official assets. The gameplay was alright, but for non-competitive players it started to wear out, and I was feeling it too.
You can still try this stuff, by the way. Just go find a copy of The Orange Box on Xbox 360 and play around in that for a while. The tenth time you go to airblast someone or pick up metal for cloak or eat a Sandvich, you'll start realizing how much you appreciate modern TF2.
Tried to launch it.
Didn't work.
Tried using RevEmu.
Doesn't work either or I have no idea what I'm doing.
Even the constant flow of content couldn't hold me, the game gets dead boring after a while. I don't play TF2 for 3 years, I launch it eventually, but only for a half hour once in a couple of months.
And TF2 was essentially improved-slash-shrinked version of TFC at the moment of release, basically it was the same game with less gamemodes and maps and brand new visuals, anyway, it's not that addicting kind of gameplay to play it for over a decade.
And I have no idea who seriosuly plays cs 1.6 now, those guys must be big addicts
ehh
On the other hand, I hate custom weapons becasue everybody on the server seem to have broken op guns and it feels a tiny bit not fair and pay2win-ish, because I gave all my items to a friend and hence playing mostly with default loadout.
It's hard to enjoy a game you clearly didn't take the time to understand. Most unlocks are either crap or sidegrades.

Then you should find a crap, that suits you most.
For example, I don't mind, that i have 1 less rocket, when they can fly much faster (with Liberty Launcher)

This entire post is just so painfully wrong it's scary. First off, people play 1.6 because CS:S and CS:GO play completely differently than 1.6 (and CS:S and CS:GO play differently from each other), and the 1.6 players feel that the differences are for the worst, not for the better. They're not addicts, they have a strong opinion. The "custom weapons" are far from broken or OP, but I can understand a kind of future shock if you haven't played in a while and aren't used to a majority of the weapons.
