I have this crazy idea.
What if we host and play on a server of some really old tf2 version? We can get any of them using the depot.
Or you could just play the current version with hats and unlocks blacklisted and play a much better game
Or you could just play the current version with hats and unlocks blacklisted and play a much better game
But the ability to upgrade teleporters RUINED THE GAME
You can still try this stuff, by the way. Just go find a copy of The Orange Box on Xbox 360 and play around in that for a while. The tenth time you go to airblast someone or pick up metal for cloak or eat a Sandvich, you'll start realizing how much you appreciate modern TF2.
I counter with every time I have to deal with some poorly balanced weapon (Gunslinger, any of the crutches, most of the weapons that allow for more insta-kills). Or the periods of terror where weapons like full-stun-on-ubers Sandman, +50 health Backburner, death-grip Natascha, spammable Dead Ringer reigned supreme.
Does anyone miss having to deal with insta-spin Tomislav + 150 medkit sandvich + old GRU? Or +20% damage Enforcer?
Not every change is an improvement. Plenty of terrible changes were made to the game. It's not a straight upgrade. For every airblast, kritzkrieg and flare gun we have crap like what I mentioned.

Those have all been ironed out at this point, though. Just because some past updates tweaked the balance a bit too harshly doesn't mean the game wasn't eventually improved by them. All of those weapons have a good purpose and place now. I'm not saying Valve should continue putting out massive balance tweaks out of the blue, though; I also felt the imbalance with some of those updates and I think they don't use the beta enough to test this stuff. But that's another issue entirely.
My point was mostly talking about a theoretical TF2 that never got any major updates. It would've gotten stale. As crazy as some of the old class updates were, at least they brought you back to the game, right? And even though they could've used some public beta testing, the secrecy and anticipation kept us excited for the game. The point is, they added something new, and after Valve smoothed them out the game ended up better for it.
But the ability to upgrade teleporters RUINED THE GAME
How does that ruin the game
Jesus christ the old TF2 screens hit me like a brick to the jaw. Has TF2 really been out this long? I'm just now realizing how much time I've spent on the game alone and the vast transformation which has occurred before me. TF2 today is an entirely different beast than it was upon release. I have had fun for all 1.4k+ hours I've put into TF2 because of the changes. The vastly varying tactics for each class, bundled with the new objectives each game mode and map brings. I was skeptical to buy it, but I'm glad I did.
How does that ruin the game
It was a joke
I was basically implying that TF2 is still the same game, just slightly improved in some aspects, if you ignore the drop system. There's so many people saying "I WISH WE COULD GO BACK AND PLAY THE OLD VERSION" when it would be as simple as just unequipping your items to get nearly the same effect.
Rather than going through the effort of downloading 5 GBs of new data and finding other people who have done the same, you can just get them all to not use their drops and just play on a private server.
you cant run these versions, they don't download any of the necessary DLL files or even an engine for that matter
Tried to launch it.
Didn't work.
Tried using RevEmu.
Doesn't work either or I have no idea what I'm doing.
old tf2 won't work with revemu because revemu is made for the current steam libraries (or whatever they're called), while the old version of tf2 is using older ones.
you might be able to use files from the TF2 beta with SFM, but i'm not sure

Hello, I am sey-tanist from CSmania.RU and I HAVE that very first version of TF2 that worked with SFM. It is ripped from Russian retail disc and it is really first beta version. And it works (I am using SteamEmu 3.82 to make it run) and I can share it with you freely. I just need some time (one day or so). Should I do that?

I have one too, what a coincidence! Пробовал накатить файлы из версии ноль с депота на древнюю бету с SFM? Заработает такой Франкенштайн?

That'd be nice.

Hey, It's great! lol
Will try later
That'd be nice.
Okay, just wait.
UPD: My internet connection on computer, from which I am downloading it, is very slow, so wait 2 days. Will be up on Monday/Tuesday.

Fuck posting at 2am was a bad idea.
Sorry to continue on this tangent.
This. I've been transitioning to go for the past week from 1.6, and I hate many of the changes. It completely switched the game to be more camper and casual oriented in many cases. However, due to csgo being in its prime, its good as I can find decent games, rather than just playing with nonsteam mexicans. I understand why many are afraid to switch.
Um, wrong thread?
:v:
The earliest possible TF2 is version 1.0.0.0 (17.09.2007) protocol 8, and could be obtained from a pirate rip.
The only version old SFM works with is version 1.0.0.0 protocol 8 (21.09.2007).
The earliest downloadable from Steam "Source 2007 Engine (Binaries)" version (using DepotDownloader) is version 1.0.0.6 (26.10.2007) protocol 12.
The earliest downloadable from Steam "TF2 Content / Materials / Client Content" version (using DepotDownloader) is version 1.0.0.0 (21.09.2007) protocol 8.
Here comes the full instructions for playing this motherfucker old-style.
WAY #1 - Pirate game, working Source Filmmaker.
1. Download the game from my folder and install it.
2. Install tf2_HOTFIXCRACK_1000(17.09.2007)p8.exe (extract it to the game folder).
3. Now you have full TF2 version 1.0.0.0 (17.09.2007) protocol 8 and it is ready to launch. You can play it. Use RUN_TF2.exe to start.
You want SFM? Here you go.
4. First, update game to the version 1.0.0.0 (21.09.2007) protocol 8 by downloading the update tf2_update_1000(17.09.2007)p8_1000(21.09.2007)p8.exe and extracting it to game's folder, as usual. Remember, this is the ONLY version that works with SFM.
5. Download and extract SFM itself - tf2_sfm_1000(21.09.2007)p8.exe. Start the game with following parameters
hl2.exe -game tf -applaunch 440 -window -noborder -novid -tools
or just start TF2SFM.bat.
Be happy! Oh, you don't want SFM, but want some more stable and not-so-bugged game?
Download all updates and install them just like you've done before, but follow the order. Just know the filename format:
tf2_update_%FROM_VERSION%_%TO_VERSION%
I recommend to see the dates and follow them. They won't lie.
WAY #2 - DepotDownloader, no Source Filmmaker.
1. Grab DepotDownloader and use it as shown below:
DepotDownloader.exe -depot %DEPOTID% -version %VERSION% -dir %DIRECTORY%
You don't even need to login.
2. Here is the list of depots used by TF2 and the earliest downloadable versions of each. For other depots you may visit Valve Wiki.
Depot 216 Version 0 Source 2007 Binaries - contains engine protocol 12 that is only suitable for TF2 version 1.0.0.6 (26.10.2007) protocol 12
Depot 441 Version 0 Team Fortress 2 Content - contains TF2 version 1.0.0.0 (21.09.2007) protocol 8 that is only suitable for engine protocol 8
Depot 442 Version 0 Team Fortress 2 Materials __________/
Depot 443 Version 0 Team Fortress 2 Client Content ____/
Depot 206 Version 2 Base Source Shared Materials
Depot 207 Version 2 Base Source Shared Models
Depot 208 Version 2 Base Source Shared Sounds
Depot 305 Version 0 Source 2007 Shared Materials
Depot 306 Version 0 Source 2007 Shared Models
Depot 307 Version 0 Source 2007 Shared Sounds
Download in this order, so that "Source 2007 Shared" files could overwrite "Base Source Shared" files.
3. Install HOTFIXCRACK and all patches up to version 1.0.0.6 to get the game working. Or you can update it even higher.
4. SFM is strangely included in Depot 216 Version 0, but it doesn't work with that engine, so no SFM here.
TF2 Old MEGA Folder Link
Ask me in PM.
Other patches are lost, but you can restore them with DepotDownloader, if you're nuts enough. I don't have time for this.
Have fun!

And I thought downloading a free game is not a warez...
O tempora! O mores!
Wasn't free then, so it is.
So I discovered that version from depot 441 version 0 is not the mega-earliest possible TF2. Judging by tf\bin\client.dll size, it is version 1.0.0.0 (21.09.2007) for engine protocol 8, but the first was released 17.09.2007.
My copy of the public beta has its version listing say
Protocol version 8
Exe version 1.0.0.0 (tf)
Exe build: 13:10:15 Sep 17 2007 (3236)
- so there isn't anything much to peek at behind the curtain, it seems.
And I thought downloading a free game is not a warez...
O tempora! O mores!
That's not how copyright law works. The price of the software is irrelevant. Just because it's free does not mean anyone is free to redistribute it, or modified code based on it, without permission. It's interesting to see how many people in this thread believe that because TF2 is a free game they can do whatever they want with the code.
Then there is no way to launch this version legally. Deal with it.
So... this version wasn't really unreleased after all?
Yeah.
We have spent over ten pages drooling over something that was on piratebay for ages.
I know that the early Spy and Pyro textures were recently released on Gamebanana, but is there any way in Hell that we can get the rest of the early player textures, or player models for that matter?

Someone should just upload all the .gcf files for this old version and be done with it.

Yeah, everyone wants their mitts on those gcfs. The question is- are ALL the early player models and textures in there, or just a handful like the Demo, Sniper, Spy and Pyro?
