I'd be surprised if better hitboxes somehow manages to fix the bugs in the netcode which is where all of these problems are present in.
Didn't say it would, but there's more to hit registration than netcode. Not tons, but still.
You're absolutely correct, there is a certain plasticity to TF2's surfaces. Some would argue that's part of the art style, though.
It is to a degree, but I've always wondered what TF2 would look like if it had been made more recently.
I suspect it'd either be further stylized with more showy particle effects like Overwatch, or more detailed like the 50s artwork that inspired it. The SMG (and others) probably wouldn't look so plastic.
point being tf2's look is partially the result of trying to make something that looks nice without bumping into graphical restrictions
I just found a giftapult via random drops.
let me get this straight, I got a random drop that I can't actually use because of some trader detail nuisance that nobody cares about?
fantastic
I think Valve/weapon creators should update some of their weapon models when they're in low-medium quality because some of the weapons in those qualities are ugly.
Ya know what else would be great? Some updates to the firstperson viewmodels.
CSGO just got a huge Viewmodel update, why shouldn't we?
I mean just look at some of the inconsistencies, heavy's model's fists are brown, but his viewmodels are bluish grey, sniper has a watch and only 1 glove in third person but his first person hands have just brown gloves, no watch.
I would be happy if they just applied bl8demat3r's 70 FOV fix pack and be done with it. Give him a cut or however it would work, they're a million times better than default.
The Soldier's arms are the biggest offender imo. They're a low-poly, tiny-textured mess and every time I enter a pure server and see the default arms I vomit blood
Or you know
Make valve sv_pure servers not a thing
Literally nobody asked for it
I don't care if someone has stupid textures that lets them see through walls which ends up with them still being killed due to incompetence, I just want my cool skins
It's hard to look at normal TF2 once you start using the TIP.

People were using a custom mod that was basically like using an unfair client. Seeing players behind walls and such. Sadly, a small minority ruin it for everyone. They really need to make sure servers with sv_pure enabled at least load the defaults rather than make an attempt to load custom content and leaving you with invisible/bugged models or horrible sound bugs.

That wasn't even a problem
The problem was people using lmaobox which still Valve sucks at fixing and never will be fixed, which is worse than seeing through walls. It's literal aimbot.
If Valve refuses to fix that then I don't see the harm in letting people use skins, we already have to disconnect from the majority of Valve servers already.
Really doesn't help that Valve pretty much fucked over custom servers and their use due to contracts and quickplay. Pretty much guaranteed low population in those kinds of servers now.
Valve is a very like-able company and a very hate-able company at the same time.

Yeah, dunno what's up with that. Gun mettle could be done on community servers iirc. Joined a community server for tough break and the contract wouldn't activate. Had to have someone explain to me why it was not active. Quickplay is real bad, since most of the time it puts you in a round that is almost over or 100% empty. When I want to quickly join a payload game it should send me to a valve server with 23/24 players, <100 ping, and not just about to end.

Nope.

I think they relinquished their charm quite a number of years ago.

That's why what I end up doing is just using server browser typing Valve in the tags then selecting Server Not Full and Has Users Playng, that way I can pick and choose with ease. (Also I reccomend the latency being < 100)

My problem with valve is as soon as I start getting tired of their crap they do something great to make me love them again
sv_pure being enabled on all official servers is what got me to slowly stop playing TF2.
I know I'd play more if my favorite servers weren't ghost towns/closed
/and if I had a better machine to play the game on

Not trying to sound mean spirited or down right contrarian, but I honestly can't recall anything valve has done recently that has made me jump with joy. I mean just as of a few years or so we have:
paid skyrim mods, trading escrow and the mobile authenticator made essentially mandatory for trading, sv_pure 1 on official TF2 servers, quickplay, the R8, that whole ARG xmas debacle, CSGO effectively destroying custom servers.
There really hasn't been something valve did as of late that stands out to make me love them.

I was mainly talking TF2 stuff exclusively

sv_pure is a necessary evil. without it, cheaters would be far more abundant, especially with wallcheats.
sv_pure is a necessary evil. without it, cheaters would be far more abundant, especially with wallcheats.
But wasn't one of those cheating megapacks patched to bypass SV_Pure
I was mainly talking TF2 stuff exclusively
The stuff I said still stands then, sv_pure 1, quickplay sucking the life out of community servers.
And let's not forget the copious amounts of bugs and performance issues that never seem to get dealt with in a meaningful way.
Remember that titanic "performance update" that was hinted at some months ago on reddit by that John gentleman? When's that gonna be? Did it already happen?
And what about some very basic things that have been in the game forever that no one at valve seems to pick up on: viewmodel inconsistencies/glitches, beta class icons, outdated gib textures.
Maybe it's just me but when those things still exist no amount of campaign passes or cosmetic skins or hats can take the place of game polish and proper functionality.
And I could fix them myself with the help of mods/skins BUT OH WAIT SV_PURE
But wasn't one of those cheating megapacks patched to bypass SV_Pure
there's still a completely "legitimate" way of getting wallhacks without sv_pure. It's unfortunate that it has to be like this, as most people just want to have their weapon skins and sounds, which is now impossible save for all 5 sv_pure servers with more than 2 people on them.

Ok well you've got me beat argument wise
I haven't been able to trade for 2 months now, so I'm not the happiest. I still respect them as a company for updating a fantastic game with updates and polishing patches, but it its becoming a problem when I can't enjoy the game because I lack a smartphone. If the escrow was handled better, I'd even be spending more money on the game, and play it a whole lot more for its economy aspect.

Yeah they didn't handle escrow well AT ALL. I think they should've atleast removed the trade hold from buying stuff from teh market at the minimum
Valve basically wants 100% control over the community and its not right
Well, they do CREATE the community, so they do control it 24/7, in a way. The choices they make affect the fanbase. And the choices they made have negatively affected the consumers. They seem like they're no trying to be so harsh with control, but rather are just confused on finding a way to stop the flood of user's with stolen items they're getting. But they don't exactly know how without putting all these restrictions on players.
Valve basically wants 100% control over the community and its not right
worst part is is that the community is why any of their games are still around
Uhh... there's absolutely nothing stopping the community from disabling sv_pure on community servers.
And regarding trade restrictions, if the community wasn't full of scammers and phishers and hackers constantly ripping people off and giving Valve an impossible situation to deal with, they wouldn't have to restrict anything. Valve isn't primarily to blame - the bad apples of the community are.
And by the way, Valve has always been upfront about the fact that years ago, when they could have just dropped support for TF2 given its age, they instead turned it into a sort of testbed experimental platform. They didn't have to do that. The game is almost a decade old - how many other multiplayer titles from 2007 are still being actively supported by their creators today?
all I want is the bug fixing update
So many inexcusable sloppy visual problems that have been fixed a hundred times over by the community but the tf2 team seem to be blind
In Fall 2014 a bunch of exploits were released on GameBanana. Shortly after, about a month or two later, Valve reinstated sv_pure on their servers (after about 2-3 years of it being turned off). Whether or not it was a complete coincidence and they simply forgot they had left it off is anyone's guess, but I believe it was a direct response to the so-called "megapacks" of x-ray exploits.
If my memory serves me correctly, the way those exploits worked was through a little VMT parameter called $ignorez. $ignorez does have valid uses, mainly for VGUI stuff, but applying it to models leads to a "see through walls" effect. Valve seemed to have already patched it long ago so it would not work on models, but the exploiters found a workaround by using the mat_reloadallmaterials command before connecting to a server, effectively bypassing Valve's blockage. As far as I know, it only worked on servers that had sv_pure turned off, thus Valve servers were affected at the time.
Instead of fixing the engine to block the $ignorez parameter again after the mat_reloadallmaterials command is used, Valve chose the easy route that required no coding- sv_pure 1. Both the "Valve servers are default" and "sv_pure on all Valve servers" fiascos seem to have been in-the-moment decisions by Valve that looked to be temporary, but no one ever got around to fixing the actual problems. Thus, those issues have stagnated since 2014 and that's where we are today. Now with competitive matchmaking in the works, I highly doubt Valve will ever be turning sv_pure off. It was fun while it lasted, though.
TL;DR TF2 modding is dead and so are community servers.

Community servers? Isn't that some kind of Triassic organism? I'm pretty sure they went extinct millions of years ago.
Valve has had the most awkward "solutions" to those problems, making everything worse for everyone rather than just pinpointing the problem and handling it. Both escrow and the sv_pure/community server stuff is just this huge, sweeping change because it's easy, but not customer-friendly.
Every single server except for weird sub-gamemodes is dead basically, every dedicated community I hung out with has vanished and it's pretty fucking bad
