Considering the bulk of fixes and updates the community has lined up, I wish Valve would follow their id predecessor's example of handing their game off to the community when it's clear they don't want to work on it anymore. Doom came out in 1993 and they released the source code for the Doom v1.9 engine in 1997 so people could make Linux source ports and versions for newer operating systems. They kept the IWADs commercial so the game assets and levels they created still had to be purchased (or you could play the shareware version) but it allowed people to make an open-source set of assets for the Doom source ports, and people continue making plenty and plenty of new maps and gamemodes to this day, 20-some years later. Likewise, Quake also got its source code released publicly 4 years after its commercial release. It's a damn shame Valve didn't do the same thing with GoldSrc or Source, then maybe we'd actually understand their myriad bugs.
I don't think Valve will add things like the TIP. I'm pretty sure the TF Team has some kind of rule to not touch the player textures at all, hence why things like the uber textures and Scout's red pants on blue team has stayed around ever since 2007. I know TIP isn't necessarily a "bugfix" but it's on that list of fixes and just thought I'd mention it. Anyway, I'm probably going to email Valve about allowing community servers by default again. Anyone else is also welcome to do so. I had the most success emailing erics@valvesoftware.com

I never really noticed it but I used to play on community servers and then eventually just switched to valve servers because I wanted a vanilla lag free experience now I'm kinda sad about it, checking back on the clan servers I used to play on and they've pretty much all shut down
Damn, this thread got depressing. Really is a shame how much Valve is trying to control the community. That personally goes against the whole point and reason I got into playing TF2 in the first place. Nothing lasts forever I guess.
-snip- [editline]7th February 2016[/editline] In the past the tf team has taken small ideas off r/tf2 and implemented them into the game, such as the merasmus truce during boss fight, I am going to post that idea where it asks the 50 hour person to join a community server.\ Edit: Done.

So like, if any one knows. How's the whole Iron Gauntlet thing. Is that a thing of dreams or could it actually happen?
So like, if any one knows. How's the whole Iron Gauntlet thing. Is that a thing of dreams or could it actually happen?
It's not an update, if that's what you're asking. Just a community project. edit: the thread for it is here, you could just go look at that if you're interested
So like, if any one knows. How's the whole Iron Gauntlet thing. Is that a thing of dreams or could it actually happen?
Well if all of a sudden a community badge is added to the game for the creators of Iron Gauntlet, I'd be pretty pleased to know some content is coming to MvM. Otherwise we don't even know if TF Team has acknowledged its existence.

I do think we'll see Iron Gauntlet go official though. It would be kinda stupid not to, there hasn't been any new MVM content for a long time and they could use it to fill the gap between the end of Tough Break and the summer update.

Wasn't there a post a few weeks ago mentioning the traces of a Skin Strangifier in the game files? Can somebody link me to it if true?
Wasn't there a post a few weeks ago mentioning the traces of a Skin Strangifier in the game files? Can somebody link me to it if true?
I thought it was a trade up for Normal Stranges. Also when does tough break end? At the End or Beginning of March
I thought it was a trade up for Normal Stranges. Also when does tough break end? At the End or Beginning of March
March 31st.

The rest of it was made to tie the update together, similar to 2fort invasion and the update video from invasion update.
Wasn't there a post a few weeks ago mentioning the traces of a Skin Strangifier in the game files? Ronin did create the Invasion update with the intent that it become an official update (even though he knew it possibly wouldn't be official). From the Invasion Behind the scenes page:
The Ronin (the man who was to became the Overall Project Manager for this Invasion update) had missed out on Boogaloo but was determined to be involved with a project. He wanted to see more than just another sleugh of cosmetic items though. He wanted there to be truly diverse content, maps, weapons and more. There was never a guarantee from Valve that this update would be picked up and made real. In the event that it wasn’t accepted, the idea was to release the community’s work as a big fun weekend.
Of course the only other community update was EotL, which Valve offered McVee the possibility of making an official update after seeing the WIP EotL video. There is no right way to make a community update for TF2 at this point. Every one has been created for different reasons, with one of them being created for the purpose of getting it added to the game. It worked for Invasion, I don't blame the people behind the Iron Gauntlet for trying the same thing with their update.
I wonder when or if they're going to add the regular Millstone, Sunshine, and Moonshine to the game. It's nice that they were Halloween maps and all, but all three of them (especially Sunshine) really deserve to be made official.

Hopefully Valve will add all three into the game over the next few campaigns.

And look, they did not. Player Destruction is dead, arena is dead, territorial control is dead. Thanks to introduction of the quickplay that did not include neither of those gamemodes. And of course it killed my favourite community servers so every arena(or any other forgotten mode/map) community server is empty excluding ff2 ones.

The amount of effort spent in making a TC map is just ten times the amount necessary for any other given gamemode, simply because of the sheer scale of it - and then you need to balance it. There have been one or two community attempts at them (Meridian being the most complete), but they always kind of fell down because it's such an insane task to make one. Not to say it's not weird they didn't add Hydro to A/D servers, though. Arena just needs servers, and PD is a very recent addition and just needs new maps, which can take a while. I'm pretty sure I saw one or two PD maps in the 72 hour mapping contest, actually. If anything, they need to have a "Misc. gamemode" server (with a better name) for all the loose gamemodes like PD, SD, RD, and TC.
It's funny because SD has it's own quickplay category.
Oh damn, you're right. Which... makes absolutely no sense whatsoever. They should just put the leftover game modes on those servers.
Oh damn, you're right. Which... makes absolutely no sense whatsoever. They should just put the leftover game modes on those servers.
Like you said, they should add a new quickplay option and throw all the "unusual maps there". Though arena still needs their own option.
Oh damn, you're right. Which... makes absolutely no sense whatsoever. They should just put the leftover game modes on those servers.
It's played on the CTF servers. But yeah, they need a bunch of niche gamemode servers. [editline]8th February 2016[/editline] Not like Mannpower wasn't niche enough.

It's a bit eaely to call it dead when we waited 6 years for a new CTF map and an Arena map was added in the same update despite there not being any official servers.

[editline]8th February 2016[/editline] Not like Mannpower wasn't niche enough.
alternatively, i think player destruction could do really well on KOTH servers. they're both sort of deathmatchey game modes played on smallish maps built around a central capture point, and i could see them doing really well on the same rotation, moreso than CTF and SD even. arena would definitely need its own dedicated servers, though. preferably with a smaller player count so no one is left sitting out, which was a huge problem back when byre was on the invasion servers. hydro could get dumped into the symmetrical CP rotation, maybe. if people really want to play it, then there's no harm in giving them the option to play it.
