Is anyone really hyped for matchmaking?
It'd be a nice addition, but I'm not sure if I'm super excited for it.
it just officially adds ranks to your normal gameplay. its nothing huge. but i think it will give tf a boost because people LOVE competition and bragging.
Being able to easily play with people who are neither shitters nor stompers is a pretty huge thing in my opinion.

I'm hyped in a reasonable way, enough to be sure i'm not gonna cry and shitpost.

Which really sucks because considering the playerbase that would be reached by official matchmaking as well as the kinds of features they could give us because it is official this whole thing seems like a lot of wasted potential. What could have been rankings by class across a variety of formats with structure and good coordination is instead just 1 rank, 6v6, glorified pub.
sometimes it's better to have been hyped and disappointed than never hyped at all
I don't think some of you people realise what big of an effect pretty much any kind of progression system can have on a player, theres a reason one of the main complaints on Overwatch was that it had no real progression.
It doesnt matter how fun your game is, if there is no feel of progression playing will start to feel hollow.

I couldn't give two fucks about progression, I just want to play with people my skill level.

After seeing this thread after updates like Invasion I disagree.

Progression in most games is measured by one's own increase in aptitude and that has a tangible feeling as one tends to have an increased win-rate.
Lots of games get away without offering any long-term progression because that's not what's necessary. People get psychologically attached to progression because it gives them the illusion that they're doing something productive when in reality all that's happening is they're playing the game a decent amount more.
If you don't like the void left by a lack of a progression system, then that sounds like you're a pretty shallow player. Only in it for the increasing numbers before you stop playing the game instead of continuing to play it based on your own enjoyment.

Oh don't worry, I'm still playing TF2 every weekend since its fun, but for a lot of players some kind of progression is just needed to not feel "playing pointless".
And the "comp" system will likely take care of that.
I think you guys are underestimating the effect that competitive matchmaking will have. Right now, as I see it, TF2 is churning through players. If they don't get heavily invested into the economy, there's nothing really to keep them there besides having fun -- and yet TF2 is still incredibly popular. When Valve adds a form of progression that gives people something to work towards and keep coming back for, along with the promise of fair matches (which is fucking HUGE, you must realize), it'll cause those new players to stick around.

I've played TF2 without any real progression system for over 2000 hours. Progression doesn't matter if your game is good enough.
Of course, nearly all games have some progression system nowadays, so people have come to expect that. TF2 was my first real multiplayer FPS, I came in with no expectations.
Honestly my Strange Medi-gun is the only real progression I need
Valve will probably find a way to fuck up competitive matchmaking. :v:

From the one stream we've seen of it, its going to highly limited, even more so than just sv_pure.
I recall Custom huds being debatable, view models being locked on, and a lot of cfgs being limited.
You can see what 6s looks like with no weapon bans here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b38GtNijJrE
It's not very pretty. It's so reactive (I wonder if they're running a heavy or gunslinger engie to mid? better run spy!) that there's no real strategy to it. Nobody bothers to count uber or numbers advantage before starting a push because hey, they could be using Vita-Saw or Quick-Fix or could be Dead-Ringing.
In regular 6s, you painstakingly develop advantages and execute off them; having a medic know when to back out, when scouts should rush in and clean up frags, when demos should blow up their traps, when soldiers should bomb in, when a sniper/spy pick class should be sent in to break up a stalemate, all of these are based on proper reactions to reasonably predictable scenarios. In Valve's Game, as they called it, it's just an uncoordinated DM struggle with little teamplay. It wasn't as fun to watch as I thought it would be, and it doesn't look very fun to play at a high level.
Anyone remember that video with things like the Buff Banner, Battalion's Backup, etc being used in competitive?
Something I distinctly remember is a soldier on Borneo or Swiftwater holding onto a backup charge and releasing it right before a crit sticky gets shot across the map and doesn't instakill his team's medic.
So what exactly is everyone expecting from matchmaking at this point, anyway?

To be released this week.

A funny blog post / promo page, some microtransactions, and insufferable server congestion in the early days.
The way everybody considers this update as the savior of tf2 is astonishing. This won't meet your expectations because even if MM does magically put you into perfect games consistently, you can't fix people attitudes. You're still going to face a million lennyfaces and taunters and bind shit.
Yeah, as good as having matchmaking is, has no-one here played lobbies on TF2Center? At best they're really good but quite often you get a level that's only very slightly above pubs, and it still has all the binds and spam and jokers.
The nice thing about matchmaking though is that if you actually put in effort you hopefully get into a pool of players who rose above that.

So? These are not the main issue with tf2

CS:GO but with the ability to choose classes before matches and stuff like class limits, what items are banned/allowed, etc
I'm just in it for the no random crits.
Most people just want to play TF2 matches, from start to finish, with players of the same skill.
Launching competitive with only 6s would be a huge mistake.

The way I see it matchmaking brings with it more than just a competitive system, it essentially tethers to a tf2 renaissance, where the potential consistent players will boost, same with artists, content creators, competitive league prizepools, and a reliable way to gather weapon statistics and make efficient weapon rebalances and releases
If they can create a well-recieved matchmaking system who knows how many old big names could return, if even for a little while.
(This is also a very good thing for content creators, because this means a new generation of people buying items, watching videos, trading, giving feedback, creating new ideas, etc)
I don't understand why people talk down all the potential upsides. "MM wont magically save the dead game!!!" nobody said it would, but if it has a positive impact then it will slowly push the game to become something bigger over the course of time as it's tweaked and improved, even if it's not overnight.
It would seem Valve has shut the game down, servers and item server. Patch?
