valve being the worst company in gaming today yet again
Honestly I think mobile auth has been getting WAY TOO MUCH FLAK look I know not everyone has phones/compatible phones but seriously? Worst Company in gaming?! Also it's not like you completely need a phone there are plenty of workarounds and it's not even that much you have to put up with. I mean 3 days of a trade hold may be too much especially with the market's week but having a lower chance to get into a beta isn't exactly a huge price :\
Valve should optimize their shitty app before shoving it on our faces.
Now I really have no idea why would someone say that.. They just posted a status update, which is a rare thing from Valve to begin with, and I don't think it contained any bad news that would make them the "worst company in gaming". I only see positive things in this announcement.
I was talking about the authenticator. But consider the following:
1. Mobile authenticator
2. trade holds
3. Escrow
4. email confirmations
5. zero customer support (including telling a guy to find a 10 year old CS cd to verify his account)
6. Quickplay
7. unprofessionalism
8. Poor working environment (read their glassdoor reviews)
9. unforgivable glitches such as the christmas day account information error
10. zero communication
11. zero attempts to foster a community in tf2
12. tiered cases
13. getting cases from contracts you need to pay to open and are useless otherwise
14. invasion
15. destroying tf2's artstyle
16. supposedly "bimonthly" comics
17. using TF2 as a testing ground to test out ways to make money rather than delivering content that matters
18. end of the line
19. Smissmas 2013
20. Steam greenlight
21. In a similar vein, early access
22. Shutting down STS over a company infight
23. paid mods
24. no community interaction whatsoever, even with the press
25. using an image like this [t]http://i.imgur.com/G9IJMNQ.png[/t] as late as a couple months ago
Need I go on?
Every time your heart pumps blood it must be authenticated by the steam guard mobile authenticator or your life gets stuck in the escrow.
-Valve
I like none of their requirements have anything to do with playing tf2 competitively.
This really is just going to be ranked pubs.
I?
I'm 100% certain Valve never promised us anything for smissmas 2013, Invasion was good, just the delays to make sure stuff was working were annoying. They also intentionally leaked all of our personal info because they are so awful. It is not like other major companies accidentally leak info.
There are 2 sides to talking about Valve, witch hunters who think they are the devil because "paid mods ruined my entire life" and people who praise them with a very small middle ground. I'm pissed at the escrow and phone stuff to but don't drag unrelated shit into this. Also, EOTL was more hyped by the community than Valve.
I wouldn't even mind using the authenticator if the app wasn't so fucking shitty and ugly. The iPhone app is decent but the Android one is so behind in design standards and is a huge mess of different styles.
8. Poor working environment (read their glassdoor reviews)
At other companies, your info is not leaked unless some hacker finds a vulnerability and accesses the databases. In Steam, it was available to everyone, including the end user, for the reasons of ???
Also, if Valve had simply said EOTL will be a small cosmetic update to accompany the video which is the main focus, people would have been satisfied. Valve never said anything about EOTL until it was released. Everything we found out about it was through community sources.

But Skyrim is pretty awesome.

Literally what
A lot of those are fairly critical, even if the star rating doesn't give it away, and shows things that were pretty apparent from the way Valve does business: arrogance, lack of structure, and lazyness.

Read the fourth review down, apparently the review system is flawed (Not going to change my opinion of respecting valve as a company though)
...
Yes, some those aren't good moves, but I think their reputation can afford that easily. Their games, and Steam are great, and most of us use it every day. Few setbacks won't bring them close to being the worst. Not even to bad. You fail to look at the huge amount of good things they have/had going on, and those are the ones that make them better than most of the other companies in the gaming industry that I know of.

Yep. Valve officially worse than CDPR.

I always hate saying these types of things but I do the the Anti-Valve circlejerk is a bit annoying. Look I know they've made a lot of fuck ups but I mean their games are still fun (well most if not all) and Steam is really nice to have
Valve didn't push the update today and they are the worst people ever everything they do is awful :hurr:
I think it's more that they're sick of cheaters in their games and prioritizing people that register accounts to phone numbers will mean there are less cheaters in the beta and less people using alts
what the hell
I activated Steam Guard mobile, so it sent a verification code to my phone.
The phone number it got sent from is the same Blizzard used to verify my Battle.net account.
Valve Software = Blizzard Entertainment confirmed

It all makes sense now, the TF2 comp beta is actually the Overwatch beta, that's what the guy meant as a "literal gamechanger"
Why do you guys keep using that mattr0d guy as a trusty source of info, it's clear that he knows the exact stuff as everyone in this thread. Easily anyone in this thread can just make a twitter account with a bad name that looked like a pro player and then just speculate there like they do here. Lol.
-snip-
I don't like mobile auth either, but if someone really wants to use it without a smartphone, it's not that difficult to make it happen. There are apps to do it on your pc, and if you don't trust those for some reason, you can always run some lightweight Android emulator. (In case of serious trust issues, the one made by Google.)
And the last 2 person in this thread who mentioned that they don't own a mobile at all were both from the US, so I think Google has a solution for that as well. Or you can always borrow someone's phone for that 1 sms. It's not convinient, but definitely doable.
Still need a phone number to do the google voice thing. That being said...I have a cell phone now. :pudge:

It's just a third party authenticator service that both Valve and Blizzard use.

But he was right. Today they announced more information about the competitive matchmaking beta.
I wonder if, now that they're pretty close to giving them out to people, they'll remember the icon for the beta pass is still the same as the Name Tag's icon. One would hope they change it to something a little more presentable, before everybody sees the placeholder.

I wouldn't get your hopes up on that.
you know whats sad, Steam keeps on going "you should get the authenticator for your steam account" and I'm going "but I have a Windows phone...you don't even support my phone, there is no steam for windows phone"
Then I cry in the corner due to no one supports windows phones.
My backpack is getting filled with weapon and case drops because i can't get rid of them on scrap.tf thanks to my opposition to the mobile authenticator.
Well, atleast we now have it official that the Update is in the next week. Or so.
Matt saved his butt, Valve is the new and classic scapegoat as always now.
