Valve would be able to ban the server off the Quickplay system, possibly ban the steam accounts tied to the server (because you need a Steam account tied to the server to get on Quickplay iirc), possibly there's a function in Quickplay to find out who visited the server and help get their shit back... The "main reason" Valve disabled community servers from Quickplay eligibility was because of the bloody HTML MOTD bullshit. Unskippable ads, etc.
Jet, that would require effort. Effort and Valve don't go together.
The problem is no matter how many hoops Valve make people jump trying to make it idiot proof, they will just make bigger idiots.
Making things idiot proof is generally how you make idiots.
Coincidentally, CSGO just had this string added in a recent update, which seems relevant to what we were just discussing. "A server using your game server login token has been banned. Your account is now permanently banned from operating game servers, and you have a cooldown from connecting to game servers."
TF2 Item Server down for anyone else?
TF2 Item Server down for anyone else?
its tuesday
its tuesday
ah ok thanks
Will there be any update once the passes go out? A blog post?
What do you expect valve to do when every fucking community server was getting more and more toxic? Bullshit like unskippable ads, premium benefits, even ads that obstructed your ingame vision... It kept getting worse and worse and worse.

As options that gave more and more money caught on, more servers started to use them, especially if they lacked a donation method, which was surprisingly common. I'd rather deal with stupid ads that last 10 seconds on my screen and have a blast playing stupid gamemodes/custom maps/nocrit servers than deal with playing the same drab song and dance Payload Valve Server rotation imo.
Will there be any update once the passes go out? A blog post?
It will most likely be a plain announcement on the group page, with the inevitable wave of depressed/angry comments from people who didn't get a pass.

They're not businesses, they're community servers.
No, they didn't have to make money. They're not businesses, they're community servers.
server maintenance costs money you know
No, they didn't have to make money. They're not businesses, they're community servers.
Servers don't pay for themselves. Having some consistent way to foot the bill every month is a lot more appealing than just eating a hole in someone's pocket. Startups are harder and harder to justify if there's nothing but a net loss. So that only leaves the giants who already have their costs pretty much taken care of through other means such as ads on their main website. Sure, servers don't have to make a bottom line like a typical for-profit format allots, but in that same vain, that money gets directly re-invested into keeping the server running for longer or to upgrade services or expansions. Non-profit doesn't mean no money is made.
No, they didn't have to make money. They're not businesses, they're community servers.
not everyone has a large mountain of cash like you geel
It's the same deal as with internet ads. You can't run a business like that and expect there not to be repercussions. There were consequences for the shitty way the majority of community servers were being run. Deal with it.
The best community servers were the ones that weren't being ran to make a profit.
The best community servers were the ones that weren't being ran to make a profit.
Yeah, agreed. Too bad they were few and far between and to find them you had to wade through a lake of shit for an hour while your game is constantly being polluted with advertisements
Yeah, agreed. Too bad they were few and far between and to find them you had to wade through a lake of shit for an hour while your game is constantly being polluted with advertisements
Now the entire game is a lake of shit. I would take a 30 second ad, and than an enjoyable game with decent players than no ad, and a terrible experience entirely because everyone either installed last week or doesnt give a shit.
Ignoring the fact that valve helped with the introduction of pinion in the first place :/
Pinion was merely the start. If it was JUST pinion, that'd be fine. But then servers started forcing you to stay and watch the ads. They started forcing you to watch ANOTHER AD after you died. I've seen advertisements that somehow popped up in a panel in the middle of your game. Servers literally would not let you play unless you watched an ad. Do they have the right to do this? Yup. That's why the servers themselves are still around. Valve, however, was not obliged to put them into the default quickplay rotation. On a lighter note, I'm hoping that Valve will make it so the different health packs are dependent on a client-side option, rather than on Halloween mode being on/off. I love a lot of the Halloween hats, but I really don't like the Halloween health packs (excluding a thrown Dalokoh's bar.)
what is competitive matchmaking
12 man valve servers judging from what we know now
12 man valve servers judging from what we know now
with ranked MMR which solves the "just joined yesterday" problem
with ranked MMR which solves the "just joined yesterday" problem
how does it solve the noone plays medic and multiple sniper and spy problem? how does it solve the immense broken and useless weapons problem? what if someone wants to play a gamemode thats not 6v6? also ignoring the fact that you should not have to use a ranked mode with a halved playercount to get an ounce of TEAMwork in TEAM fortress 2 the average community server was way above valve servers in terms of player quality and moderation, if some servers made you sit through a 30 second ad for that quality than it was worth it.
how does it solve the noone plays medic and multiple sniper and spy problem? also ignoring the fact that you should not have to use a ranked mode with a halved playercount to get an ounce of TEAMwork in TEAM fortress 2
You can either have a good, structured game with fewer players or you can have an unstructured fuckfest with 12v12. Your pick.
You can either have a good, structured game with fewer players or you can have an unstructured fuckfest with 12v12. community servers were clearly able to exist and sustain themselves in the years before the advent of pinion and other ads. they're not an absolute essential to keep servers running. i've said this before, but i think the ideal solution would've been to keep community servers in quickplay by default, while also aggressively de-listing any servers with ads, pay-to-win benefits, or other such things. instead they went with the easy method of changing one convar and disabling all community servers by default, and now every server has suffered for it, not just the ones that caused the problem in the first place.
