I personally find 6s more intresting and it's more unpredictable which, is always good for any competitive format. and if valve is trying to have TF2 be stronger with the streaming scene, It'd make sense for them to have that be a focus on matchmaking. But hey, that's just my two cents on the topic.
6s and Highlander both aren't "true TF2". TF2 was meant to work anywhere between 9v9 to 12v12. I just wish we could do that. Click a button, queue up with people of the same skill, and play a single fair game of TF2 with the same team I started the match with. But no of course we can't have that. We have to turn it into eSports and cather to 6v6 which plays nothing like what we've all been playing for years. Now we'll be stuck with 3 choices: -6v6 full of tryhards, elitists, and toxic people -12v12 pubstomps on Valve servers with children, hackers, disconnects every minute, conga lines, afks -1v0 on dead community servers
The entire "good 12 v 12" games thing can be easily solved: revive community servers. You don't need matchmaking for that, just a decent group of people. (The community vs. Valve/skial-type servers divide in skill is also pretty close to what Stric_Matic was suggesting, as that's kind of what happened in the past already.) You're kind of overestimating the influence matchmaking tends to have on games. Even with people with equal skill, however that's ranked, you still need a certain class composition of your teams to make it work. With 12 strangers and (assumedly) no class limits, that's a huge amount of people to organize around into a decent team. Equal skill does not suddenly mean a decrease in bad behaviour, "maining" a class until the end of time, or people who are just plain uncooperative. See: any game with matchmaking. That said, there's no telling that we might get it or not. The reason it's 6v6 for now is because low players numbers are easy to manage, not because Valve suddenly hates all alternatives for matchmaking. [editline]24th February 2016[/editline]
The best community servers were the ones that weren't being ran to make a profit.
How many servers do you actually think are "running to make a profit"? Most just ran on donations or small MOTD ads to just foot the bill every month, and even then tended to be a net loss.
Actually having a pair of 6's teams per side would be pretty interesting. Have one 6-man team always cover main and the other always cover the flank. They'd be in their own mumble channels and when they need to talk to the entire team they could use in-game voice. I'd actually be really interested in a game format like that.
You need to post this stuff somewhere on teamfortress.tv or etf2l forums! This idea is golden!
6s was never confirmed for the only ever competitive mode, merely it was chosen as the primary focus of the beta (that said, I've got low expectations they will juggle both 6s and a HL mode.)
If I recall, it was mentioned that they were focusing on 6s first for testing the matchmaking system, since search times will be shorter when having to match up 12 players compared to matching up 18 players. So 6s will not be the only mode in matchmaking, there'll be 9s probably around the time when the beta testing is drawing to a close.
enigma: highlander is a community-developed gamemode that removes class switching entirely from the game and arbitrarily enforces the all-classes-are-equal mantra which the developers (to my face) have said was never intended
Honestly, all classes should have been created equal. Skewing the game in the favor of three generalists and one healer undermines any and all class equilibrium, hence why absurd concepts such as cookie-cutter rosters exist. Why bother with nine classes at all if 90% of all gameplay orbits around 44.4% of what the game has to offer? I can only abide Soldiers, Scouts, and Demomen for so long.
Soldier is the only generalist though. Demo's specialized in laying traps and crowd control at a safe distance, while Scout is specialized in taking unguarded objectives and hit and run combat. It's just that they (and Heavy and Pyro depending on how they're played) are the combat classes, so obviously the combat-oriented game focuses on them.
Aren't the main 6's classes chosen because of their mobility, not just their damage output? There's no denying that Heavy has better damage output than Scout or Soldier, but he's too slow to keep up with the fast-paced format of 6s, which is why he's stuck defending last. Admittedly, I only played one season of it before giving it up for HL, so I'm probably wrong here. :v:
Soldier Scout and Demoman are significantly better than the rest of the classes. But yeah, its mostly because of their mobility game that makes 6s fast paced and fun to watch.
soldier and demo not taking full self-damage from their explosives (if not jumping) was a mistake right off the start.
6s is probably what works best as a team format for comp, but it's not really TF2, it's more of a sub game within TF2 that comp players came up with. To me TF2 will always at it's core be a large number of players (9-12) playing a wide range of classes on one of many different game modes. 6s isn't that. I don't hate 6s (it's the comp format that I watch most often) but it just doesn't feel like real TF2 to me, because TF2 was never really designed to be competitive game and 6s players are just doing the best with what they're given. Personally I have very little interest in playing 6s and would be far more interested in Highlander just because it's closer to normal TF2.
highlander feels closer to tf2 because its closer to a pub. we're not looking for a pub in competitive mode. that is of course not to say there should not be support for some kind of highlander, but if Highlander is going to be the main mode, nobody would take it seriously as an esport. also using closer to tf2 as an argument is pretty shit considering "true tf2" is a 12v12 pub

cant wait, ill bring the goats (although its good to not overhype random tweets from flame, it does seem likely that passes are going to be handed out tomorrow, and i suppose this means that he hopes he gets a pass, as if the sacrifice would bring him luck)
He already has a pass.
then it could be that he is in hope of the passes being released to the public (in some extent) today, as it really will be good for tf2. and he'll have more people to play with, i guess?

I'm also excited to try out competitive for the first time, is it as fun as people make it out to be?
for some reason i feel a negative undertone to the tweet, like another delay happened.
Yeah, that's probably it. I'm also excited to try out competitive for the first time, is it as fun as people make it out to be?
like any other game, its as fun as the people you play it with.
Yeah, that's probably it. I'm also excited to try out competitive for the first time, is it as fun as people make it out to be?
It is, but like the above poster said, you need to find people that enjoy it so you can enjoy it too. Don't just say yes to the first team you try out for. Play with a bunch of different teams. Look for teams that enjoy the game, not people that only care about winning and nothing else. Look for teams that constantly make you laugh, teams that make you happy to play on. That's the best way to play competitive.
i started playing 6s in 2012 but i didn't really climbed the divs cos of personal and tech issues, tho i kept playing mixes/pugs and i can say i have a fair experience. I'd love to teach the basics to those here willing to try comp out! Just hit me up if need some advices/help.

100% official legitimate leaked patch notes for today's update: - Gave a beta pass to Timmy, 7, from Florida - Updated the localization file materials and made them all-class - Fixed the AWPer Hand not using proper AWP stats
You forgot this one: - Replaced all in-game Dead of Night cosmetics with a Ghastly Gibus.
-Nobody liked spy so we removed him
Not sure whether to post this here, but is Vanguard's author aware of a very exploitable way to get out-of-bounds below the ramp at the 2nd point? Maybe someone can contact him if he's associated/friends with anyone in MUS? It's been many weeks since the map was last patched, and it seems like a rather simple mapping fix that has nothing to do with the quantum crouch exploit. Pretty much every server running the map I've played on in the last month has had a griefing Engie douchebag camping there, trying to teletrap people in that area. It's ridiculous, and 4 out of 5 votekick attempts fail due to not enough people voting, even if I take the time to explain why I'm starting the vote and ask nicely for everyone on the same team to vote Yes. Really, these pests almost always get away with griefing their own team for an hour straight if they feel like it, the mapper/Valve haven't patched it in nearly a month, and nobody can be arsed to vote or even pays attention to chat it seems. I'm getting cynical to the point that I believe the general playerbase on Valve servers deserves to suffer everything they complain about, but don't do jack shit to prevent.
-Nobody liked spy so we removed him
-most of him.
It's been many weeks since the map was last patched
Been about a month since anything was patched.
Every time someone says 6s isn't representative of how TF2 should be played they it just makes me want to fucking retract inside myself. It's already been tried, tested, and even said by devs that generalists and specialists is how it should be played, and it's far more a competitive experience (faster, more individual skill but still teamwork, less players/hectic, etc.). And it's not like you just ignore classes, because offclassing exists. Honestly if TF2's main competitive format is Highlander, it's not going anywhere esports-wise. while it's from reddit this motherfucker hits the nail on the head
Proper TF2 brings out the best in each class. That's WHY we have 9 classes each with their own dynamics and counters.

There was a griefing Engineer who just simply rolled in and started doing that. I told him that what he is doing is a douchebag thing to do. He used the responses every griefer uses, such as "y mad ;;;;))))", "whats your problem" or "lel who cares right xddd". Someone started a votekick on him, and he immediatly started being all angry in chat, writing in all caps "WHY" or "WHY THE FUCK AM I GETTING KICKED". The votekick passed, and he immediatly remarked me, and I told him that I didn't start the vote, and that even more increased his salt level. After him, another Engi joined and started doing the same. At this point our team was faster than a guillotine in the French Revolution. We votekicked around five people that way, and the enemy team was also executing Engineers who weren't helping at all. All was good again.
