Hang on a second, if you're less likely to unbox an item from a crate if you already have it, could you buy all of the shit-tier skins and keep one of each in your inventory for a boosted chance at better items?
On that note, do we know how much "less likely" means at the moment? Is it a tiny "less likely" or a massive one?

Doubtful. There's probably some system between you and the item server handling all of the transactions to determine that.
Some of you've probably noticed by now, but at least one of the new maps (Highpass) again suffers from the known case of broken, purple textures whenever you load it up for the second time in the same TF2 session.
The same way Watergate did back during Invasion when it was run on official event servers (it also loaded up with checkered spots in the HUD, and for a while it was missing the UFO countdown timer), and similar to how Suijin suffered from missing rooftoops, walls and other elements during Gun Mettle's early stages - in all cases, re-loading the same map in the same session lead to these issues.
Not a mapper, but there's something clearly wrong with the way custom map .bsp files taken from the Workshop end up incorrectly unpacking some of their resources when run on Valve servers.
Hopefully, the Highpass mappers can fix this, but they never managed to fix it for Watergate, for example. It's an issue that's plagued this new ''keep all custom map assets packed up in the .bsp file instead of adding them to the game's core files'' system for 6 months now.
It wasn't just a solitary problem with Suijin, it's happened to Borneo, Watergate and now Highpass to my knowledge. The TF2 Team might wanna take a good look into this to fix the problems at their source.
Yeah it's annoying. Valve just needs to include the custom assets in the game files proper but I don't think they're doing that because they aren't buying the maps and assets in the same way they bought previous custom maps.
My biggest problem with the current system is that contributors continue to get no cut of Steam Market sales. Especially with how the Mann Co store now features Market prices built in.
Yeah I strongly feel that the creators of an item should get a small cut of the sale of any version of the item (including reskins/festive versions/Australiums) from the market. Just make it an extra fee, it doesn't have to be huge maybe .5% or 1%, call it the item creator's fee so it doesn't even come out of Valve's cut. They could add it for the market items of all 3 Valve multiplayer games.

Updated Case opening item drop algorithm. Going forward players are now less likely to get duplicate items from the same rarity tier on repeated Case openings.
Item servers appear to be down; have been for about the last 20 minutes. Maintenance is usually Tuesdays, right?

Just got an email about the co-pilot fix i submitted so maybe we'll see a patch soon. Whether it'll be before or after fistmas is a mystery though

Nope. There is similar system in DotA and it tracks what you unboxed, not inventory. Though, it also ensures you can only unbox the duplicate of lowest tier items once you unboxed all possible lowest tiers, wonder if it works the same in TF2 now.
So I guess tonights not the night?
Tonight is unrealistic. I imagine it's either going to be tomorrow and possibly even Wednesday.
Winter Sale starts tomorrow, so tomorrow is my guess.
Has to be tomorrow. Thursday by the absolute latest imo.
is tough break smissmas?
are those gifts supposed to showcase another big update or are we done?

Fairly certain the gifts are for Christmas. They're more than likely one of two things based on the naughty or nice description:
1. They can be opened for free and will give either a Naughty or Nice crate/case containing Festive weapons and winter/holiday miscs, respectively.
2. It is the new festive crate and contains a mix of festive weapons and miscs.
The fact it is a Mystery Box instead of an actual crate/case makes me think scenario 1 is more likely. Not 100% sure where the Festivizer fits in to all this. Probably just an unbox.
maybe new weapons and asteroid/cactus canyon for smissmas?
I hope it has a little more than the festivizers. I always looked forward o the Festives as it was one of the few things Valve make themselves from scratch, rather than import community items or retool community items.

New weapons? Maybe. Asteroid and Cactus Canyon on the other hand, i doubt it.
don't expect anything more than the tough break update and festivizer gifts for christmas, otherwise you'll just be setting your expectations unrealistically high

it would be bullshit if they just make us pay to open a case that gives us a gift that gives another crate to pay to open for.
for some reason it's called gift.
but hey,
that's bullshit, but i...
believe it.
I heard rumors on reddit that a fifth contract was released a couple hours ago. Can anyone confirm?

I got my fifth one at around 1pm EST. So, to answer your question, I suppose they're dropping.
The R8 was rebalanced 3 days after going live. How Long until the phlog does too? Is there any testing done in-house?
I fear valve is seriusly lacking Man power to sustain three competitive games.
I'm just hoping they aren't going to nerf the phlog into oblivion.
phlog on pubs: ahh shit run!
phlog in competitive: thanks for the free strange count, mate.
To settle any speculation some people had on Workshop Wonderland involvement with the mysterious gift, I can safely say - we don't know what's going on either. Instead, here's this!

The Workshop Wonderland is now live! Check out the fruits of the community's labors, and donate to charity!
Happy Holidays!

edit: So i thought that everyone settled on the idea of Tough Break being smissmiss, are we actually going to get an actual smissmiss update?
I'm just hoping they aren't going to nerf the phlog into oblivion.
They should throw the weapon as it is now out the window and create something that is consistent with the other Grordbordt weapons as in something with unlimited ammo. Give it an overheat mechanic like machine guns and flamethrowers in other games, throw out the Mmph ability, give it projectile deletion like the short circuit and extinguishing like the Mannmelter. Then, instead of 20 health for extinguishing allies, it cools the weapon down more. And in doing that, the weapon becomes just like the other Weta weapons; gimmicky but still decently viable.
It's amazing how we still get quality community events like these on the brink of 2016. You're all great.
We will probably get a mini-Smissmas update where we get Festivisers and maybe a small amount of new Smissmas cosmetics alongside what we got during the Tough Break update. One of those two will likely be involved with the Mystery Smissmas gift. That's about all I would expect.

No trying to shit on your parade, but it seems you talk a lot about competitive yet you only happen to have a single ugc steel div medal.
Isnt degreaser the default weapon to go for comp pyros?
