Could tf2 really achieve esports status with big tournaments and big increase in playerbase?
Aggressively pursue balance updates to fix some of the issues that have lasted for years, move it to an engine that doesn't have the hitreg issues that TF2's does, accept that class limits are a necessary evil in matchmaking and make no random crits the official standard, then I could see it happening.
I've played highlander and I just don't see it getting a larger scene than it currently has unless Valve purposely pursues looking into weapons that competitive players view as bannable. Sure, comp would not be using the exact same rules that Valve does, but official matchmaking servers make for good training grounds when trying to retain people en mass for such a scene.
I'd be for it getting a bigger scene though, even though TF2 is in a surprisingly healthy position in terms of player count, despite appearances and the moderate apathy being shown to it over the past year or so. I feel that it will need Source 2 to get that kind of attention, though.
Kinda offtopic, but on the subject of the Tough break update,

Is this postcard by a guest artist? I don't recognize the style compared to most of the tf2 artwork that exists.
I doubt comp TF2 will ever get too big. It could be bigger then it is (and will very likely become more popular after matchmaking comes out), but the problem is TF2 was never designed to be a competitive game it was designed for large pub games.
When you look at popular comp games the game the comp players play is the same game that is played by normal players. The most popular comp format is 6s, which is very different from normal TF2. Highlander is much, much closer to normal TF2 (which is honestly why I think it would make a better format for matchmaking even if the logistics are more difficult) but is much more difficult to organize tournaments for and cast for due to the large number of players on each team and will likely never be as popular as 6s.
Honestly I'm not sure what the solution is (or if there is one).

Isn't it from the same person that made the quickplay game-mode icons?
The quickplay icons are some of my favorite pieces of official art for the game.

Makani did some of the quickplay, though not all. I remember seeing the recent Halloween ones (2014 at least) were definitely in her style. Her Scout is veryyy recognizable.
The postcards were my favorite part of Tough Break.
Well, technically they were the only thing I liked about this update other than the Crossbow buff (which destroys my beloved Syringe Gun, but sounds like fun) but I've been trying to keep the salt in check over here.
Made entirely moot because he can equip a shotgun skin that has a red star which is used to symbolize communism.
Um, no. This is generic symbol of Russian army. See for example newest Russian tank, T-14, that debuted last year:

The yellow-black ribbon is parade addition symbolizing Saint George, patron of victory, something that would be rather weird next to symbol of communism.
And this is newest Russian plane, PAK FA / T-50:

Not everything 'red' tied to Russia is communism. See Red Square, Moscow, named so in 13th century. In fact, Red Star itself predates Soviet Union, being worn by Russian soldiers since 1917. It was only added to State Emblem of the Soviet Union in 1924, to honour fallen of the civil war. If you want real symbol of communism, that would be sickle and hammer, or pure red flag.
Can't wait for Valve to make a comic that explains why Soldier is using a shotgun with a symbol of communism on it.
Along with his hilarious muh america humor.
THAT IS RED BLOODED AMERICAN SYMBOL, MAGGOT! 50 PUSH UPS, STAT! SEE THIS ALL-AMERICAN ARMY PLANE WITH RED STAR!

Mate you better snip that vid out fast, I got banned once for such a reaction video :/
Recently I have been checking back to the old MUS threads at work, since there are many times where I kinda have nothing to do and dont have a good book right now, was fun seeing everyones reaction to the 15 min short or the bread.
Also interesting to see that those things they added back then, like civilian sounds or the flamethrower which speeds you up while firing, kinda never happend.
You guys believe they were scrapped the moment TF2 took a more ""serious"" turn with Gun mettle and such?
Shamefully stolen from reddit and even more shameful if it is late :

oh yeah. they realize that the way to get lots of players and money from a game is for it to be competitive as a sort of default. I think the great thing about TF2 becoming competitive is that it will still have an actually fun casual side, unlike Counter-Strike.
[editline]19th January 2016[/editline]
those look like renamed matchmaking servers or something. but hey, we could get a secondary part to tough break relating to the pyroland case.

I really dont see tf2 becoming "competitive". I give matchmaking a month before your average MM lobby is just a 12 man pub where people say "lul is jus matchmaking go play in UGC platinum if u want people to give a shit".
And before you all say, "but they may balance the game more so you dont have to restrict anything". If valve really gave a shit about balancing the game, they would do it more than twice a year, and currently, there balance changes are pretty much entirely focused on the casual players, also some classes are just straight up too powerful, in too many situations while others suck in almost all situations, many classes would need reworks at the core level and I doubt valves willing to put that kind of effort into a game thats almost older than the kids who play it.
Comp players dont need to be encouraged to extinguish team mates.
Comp players dont want bad weapons and loadouts made worse because xXjohny2005f2pproscoperXx cant counter them
Comp players dont want balanced or OP unlocks made even more OP or straight up broken because new players dont know how to utilize them properly.

Umbadsman Balloonicorn is such a poor sport, I've dominated him ONCE and he began spamming death threats on my steam profile. Seriously.

I kind of agree, but to my surprise high-end comp players don't seem to care all that much about big changes.
remember when they made rocket splash pierce through enemies on the 2city update? for 6 years, it couldn't go through solid bodies and then suddenly valve decided to change that. I honestly thought there would be an uproar from comp but they just don't give a shit. Same for the sticky nerf.

Like I posted on that reddit post if you look at the maps those servers are running they are clearly servers for comp matchmaking.

what's the point in trading if they're just going to keep restricting it even more and more
not trying to fix the economy doesn't help either.
Trades now must be approved by a Valve-certified carrier pidgeon

They were stamping their feet at the first attempt at a sticky nerf, though to be fair, this came on the same day they buffed Engineer's Short Circuit to asinine levels so it's a bit understandable in that regard.
I still think they need to kill off winbombing though, it's really obnoxious and part of the reason Demoman is the best offensive class by a large margin. Just make the damage ramp up against players based on duration of existence yet make it always do current damage against buildings, same with the quickie launcher. ScotRes is the ideal power level of a sticky launcher, imo.

you could also make it so that during charging, the stickybomb "exists" so it does more damage coming right out of the tube

Those do look better then a lot of promo items but I don't think Valve would have them put it on the public workshop if they had an intention of adding the items to the game.
