What does the level of skill of someone has to do with their desire or ability to spend money on a pass?
Giving out passes based on number of hours played on a set percentile (for example, all players above the 99th percentile of hours played, wich would be, say, 1000 players) sounds way more reasonable, while idle accounts exist, they may be minimal (I don't have a basis for this last claim, but it may be something they could even filter out)

It has nothing to do with skill, and has everything to do with throwaway hacker accounts.
It's from the Item Schema, and there's no reason to doubt it so I guess so
Most of it is from the client schema, but I'm not seeing anything resembling a "2016/2/4" string in the current version of the client schema. Do a ctrl+f search for "Competitive" if you want to see for yourselves.

Do you mean the pass thing or the thing I suggested. Can you manually change your hours played? If you actually can then my idea it's useless :v
Anyway, I think that money has nothing to do with skill

from the reddit thread:
"the version you listed was what is currently up there, but the one I saw (from toadsstool) was the items_game.txt for a future update, which was hidden after it popped up."
¯\_(ツ)_/¯
Oh I got what you meant. But if you can't modify hours played it should be as useful on preventing hackers in.

Even if we assume that's true, which most likely it isn't, the positioning of the date seems to imply it's part of the "cannot trade" flag, which leads me to believe that's some sort of expiry date or a time when it will become tradable? But they've never needed that. When they want to make an item tradable across the board, they just remove the flag altogether -- because if it's going to expire anyway, why even have it there? There's no point for the "2016/2/4" string to exist; if it was going to be the date the pass was sold, they'd just change the "first_sale_date" string.

So what you're saying is that they might be given out before that date and be tradable on that date?
okay going to be real here and say that me and a few guys from the competitive group chat made this shit up for the lols earlier today.
pretty surprised it got that far, even on reddit.
So what you're saying is that they might be given out before that date and be tradable on that date?
I'm saying the pastebin link is probably false information, because the only thing that's different about it from the client schema's entry for the pass as of today is a string for a date in a random place that's never had a date string before. Anybody could take the schema entry for the pass and stick a date in there, when the schema is publicly available to look at.
I don't know more than any of you do about this, but I wouldn't trust that link as anything reputable.

Ah, there we are. I'm surprised it got that far too, really; it was pretty easy to search and find that the string wasn't there.

I was on the edge of trusting it and now you've definitely solidified my distrust for it
[editline]30th January 2016[/editline]
I mean I'm grasping on strings so I'd like to think they'll give out the passes tuesday but it could happen just as easily on tuesday or any other day so we're really in the dark on this :(

Funny enough I used a config that literally makes my game look better and it runs 3000 times better TF2 is weird like that

So since this thread is in a sort of limbo while waiting for competitve, I thought I would share an Idea I had and see what you guys thought.
CrossPosted From r/tf2
My Extremely unpopular opinion/idea (probably)
Please valve, Make Demoknight its own class, and make Demoman a demolitions man again.
I am tired of the lack of sticky launchers and grenade launcher options for Demoman, I know they are hard to come up with stats for but hes supposed to be a demolitions man not a swordsman. Plus demoknight plays entirely different to Demoman.
So my suggestion is make the 9th class called the Swordsman
The Swords Man Update:
New map: Set In Scotland somewhere in the wilderness, a castle theme maybe.
New Weapon: The Sabre
Left click to rapidly swing sword
right click to swing slower but do more damage
Stats: [insert percent here] faster movement speed while active (idk Im bad at stats but you get the idea, its a fencing sword)
Also add in a new sticky launcher or grenade launcher for Demoman to compensate.
Swordsman Class:
Origin: Uk or Scotland
Background: he is like a history buff or obsessed with swords and collecting them, does professional fencing and is the best fencer in the world or something. Mercenary on the side because of his fencing skills. (hey its tf2 crazier stuff has happend)
Voice: Witty British guy
Abilities: Just port over all the Demomans swords and shields, and add in the sabre melee.
Also Swordsman would have a block ability that can parry other melee attacks or something.
Thank you for reading this idea that will never happen, but its fun to discuss anyway.
Please give feedback below.
Edit: and I know this would fuck over comics, but honestly there is only 2 issues left and gameplay is more important.
Edit: I also know there will never be a 10th class, just wanted to discuss my idea.
what would be the point in doing that other than it being a huge waste of time. id much rather valve worked on things that will actually benefit the game like balances and matchmaking.
what would be the point in doing that other than it being a huge waste of time. id much rather valve worked on things that will actually benefit the game like balances and matchmaking.
Yeah it isnt a good idea, its just a fun idea.
If you know it's not a good idea don't post it?
Because its fun to discuss and this thread has hit a dry spell like it always does around this time of year.
Edit: Read the first sentence in my post.
Our we could, you know, not post at all when there's nothing to speculate about.
