• TF2 Oldschool (performance pack) Thread V2

alright, im about to test the theory proposed by gamezombie, where i replace one of the default vpk's [sp]i have chosen tf_misc[/sp] with the oldschool pack, by extracting everything in said vpk, putting the oldschool pack in the folders, then recompiling in vpk.exe using cmd to make it into multiple parts, to see if it can truly improve performance, making a download might be more practical for the end user, but a tutorial would be the best fit, i would prefer to make an installer... [sp]which would be pretty easy considering most of it can be done within vpk.exe[/sp] though i wouldnt know how to program most of the important parts..., either way, ill post the benchmarks soon.
hey guys I made thing
SUCCESS MY OPTIMISM PULLED THROUGH most of my reports of framerate with the full pack installed under the new steampipe were an average of 12-14 FPS, after fucking with it for about 6 hours, of constant crashes, irritation, and upsetting results, my framerate has doubled to just under 31 fps, of course, i cant thank gamezombie enough for helping me because whenever i would compile the vpk, i would get an error "cant read scripts/objects.txt" when he compiled it and sent it to me, it worked without a hitch, and doubled my framerate, thank goodness that it worked, IM SO FREAKING HAPPY full fraps benchmark Frames: 10869 Time (Ms): 418331 Min: 11 Max: 92 Avg: 30.567
error "cant read scripts/objects.txt" when he compiled it
Wait... why are you packing objects.txt into your vpk?
Wait... why are you packing objects.txt into your vpk?
I'll explain- the only way to get performance out of the full pack is to delete Valve's stuff in the TF2 VPK files and recompile with the TF2 oldschool pack files in their place.
yes, BUT, joining a sv_pure server causes a hl2.exe crash
Pretty sure it crashes because trusted_source in sv_pure tries to grab files from the VPK files directly, and when it doesn't find any normal tf2 and only oldschool pack, it crashes.
Pretty sure it crashes because trusted_source in sv_pure tries to grab files from the VPK files directly, and when it doesn't find any normal tf2 and only oldschool pack, it crashes.
it might actually be a little simpler than that, and actually might be caused by the way valve compiles their vpk, i opened the original vpk in notepad++ and compared it to my own compiles during the crash failures, and theres a precache section in the defaults that is created (from what i read) with a special file that lists everything to be included in that vpk, and from what i saw, you can"precache" which i assume takes load priority over the rest of the vpk, but this is mostly speculation, but it just might be that precache alone... tho my theories on compiling the vpk like that arent simple... but my guess is as good as yours, i havent joined any servers yet, because my internet connecction isnt the best, so, i wouldnt be able to tell ya weather or not it actually crashes since we recompiled the full vpk instead of replacing it with just the oldschool pack
Sorry if this sounds rude since you've only just completed it, but is it possible you could release this modified vpk? A lot of us would appreciate it.
Sorry if this sounds rude since you've only just completed it, but is it possible you could release this modified vpk? A lot of us would appreciate it.
There's no point, once tf2 gets updated it's gone.
There's no point, once tf2 gets updated it's gone.
You could always make backups.
There's no point, once tf2 gets updated it's gone.
Just like CS:GO skins but people still release those and install them all the time.
i plan on making a tutorial so you can compile it on your own, there isnt much point of releasing a vpk if it will become useless in a few days, hell, im going to have to recompile every time tf2 updates, because i need to use it for performance reasons, unless the next update bypasses the existing vpk files(like i have read it should) there will be a update next week, so stay tuned.
So where are you going to release the tutorial? I don't want to miss it because it's my last chance at playing TF2 on this crappy laptop.
the tutorial will be posted in three places, here, steam workshop guides section of tf2, and on gamebanana it will be posted the same day as the release, which will be on thursday, stay tuned [editline]5th August 2013[/editline] http://pastebin.com/tJqDB4v0

This has what to do with the thread?
This has what to do with the thread?
Duh, it's a sneak-peek of the newly revamped Oldschool pack, showing the new Medic and Scout models. Can't wait for it's release.
One Thousand and One Demoknights and Lawrence of Australia sets modeled by Insaneicide and textured by Hecates. More to come soon.
this pack is pretty awesome, I'll make a low poly version of my item sometime
I'd like to contribute to this, but I can't model, but I can texture and draw. ...Is there anything I could contribute?
I'd like to contribute to this, but I can't model, but I can texture and draw. ...Is there anything I could contribute?
is there anything you do have expierience in? we do need some particle modification, but other than that its pretty much just models and textures is what we need [sp]though if you have SFM i think we can have you on renders[/sp]

Also, can you guys make the Gibuses and Pyrovision goggles next? These are the hats i see the most in TF2
Omg I really love this pack. But for some reason when I try to open one of the pack installers nothing happens. I tried everything, and still nothing. Can anyone help me?
If you guys need particle work for this pack then you should ask Chaofanatic
