i would try if i had enough metal.
Besides, saving up metal to hopefully craft the hat you actually want is quite hard since there are about 120+ hats in game.

Awhile ago Valve added all of the recipes to the recipe list whether you found them or not.
And the sword recipe is not on that list.
As an outside observer from the trading "economy" I have to say the whole thing is a bit ridiculous, with draconian conventions. Why, for instance, is the entire economy based around the ownership of Earbuds and Max Heads? I mean, the former is cool but there's a shit ton of them out there, and the latter is just, well, not worth the "price" I might say. I dunno... it's just frustratingly inaccessible if you just want to do a good trade for a good hat.

They'll still stroke their e-peens when the ones gotten through the promotion are made genuine. But hey, it'll still knock them down to size.
Making old promos like Bill's/Earbuds/Max's Head, would be completely fucked up.
It means that, probably a million people on your friend list get screwed over, so does people who invested in the items. Also, it means trading for Unusuals with items will become impossible.
Basically, the old promos ensure trading progress, and without them, you can only get expensive items like Unusuals/HOUWAR by using real life cash, which is risky buisness.
