I haven't posted in this subforum since like 2011 or so (first came here in 2010) but I was just posting here since you all may find it interesting
Well I'm working on this personal project titled, "Before there were hats: The ongoing history of Team Fortress", right now I'm just going around gathering as much information as I can and throwing it all into a word document along with taking notes on paper, eventually I'll make it all into an hour long or so video with voiceover included detailing TF throughout the years, from 1999 all the way until now, 2015
It'll basically gloss over the major changes TF has gone through and the cool/interesting things that the community has done/come up with throughout TF (I'm talking the days of OMFGNinja, Xanatos, Evildaedalus, the whole idling program scandal with the halo hats etc)
I've just noticed that there's armor pickup entity in TF2 called item_armor. It has been in the game since 2007 release and it still hasn't been removed to this day. It uses a car battery model as a placeholder, can be spawned but can't be picked up since player classes don't have max armor values set.
Not that surprising considering armor is a pretty standard thing to have in quakelike shooters.
Was probably one of the first things implemented and eventually got scrapped in favor of simplicity.
Still, neat.

It's presumably a hold over from HL2

Armor was in HL2, and TF2 is based on HL2. It's likely an artifact from way back then.

Who needs armor if you can just stand behind your closest heavy and let him take the beating.

It isn't, I've checked the source code and it's a TF2-specific entity. Besides, HL2 doesn't even have an entity with this name. Additionally, the game also gets max armor parameters from player class scripts files but since they're not defined there (they're actually commented out) they default to 0.
Perhaps then from the days when TF2 was going to be more realistic and military-like?

TF2: Brotherhood of Arms was on GoldSource engine and it was scrapped at least 2 years before they started working on modern TF2. Doesn't look like it's a holdover from TF2: Invasion either since Invasion didn't seem to have armor.
It is most likely from the time when they wanted to have grenade's in TF2 (like in TFC) and scrapped it at some point. Same with the class melee weapons (Branding Iron etc).
They've most likely forgotten about it, hence why it's been there for so long.
I'm on the fence between wanting to try Highlander and not giving enough of a shit to commit that much time to it. I'd really rather avoid being that one dick that drops off the face of the earth and lets his team down, even if they are a bunch of strangers.
be a sub
low div hl really isnt that serious even if you play a main class. commitment is up to the team, but you might find yourself more likely to commit if you like the people, ect
it'd be nice if stuff like this started late may/early june when I'm not actually in school
The next seasons are slated to start at the end of May, so most American schools are out then. There's just a rather gratuitous amount of signup time before the next season begins.

Possible, however then there is the issue that soldier is the only class I play decently and looking at the lfp section of the UGC forum it's easily the class with the lowest need to be filled out there. Also I work thirds so I have a really weird ass schedule to work around.
Also finally trying to pick up mapping again now that I have a computer with Wandows

Last time I messed with Hammer I was maybe 17 and couldn't even figure out how to place a working door (I was attempting to map for Half Life 2).

Yeah, hammer is pretty confusing to me.
My brother, however, made a working koth map that while, not great, gives us a nice, big, open area for me and him to duel in a 2-player LAN setting
good times...
I should try record more of my gameplay since previous one was a poor show, but uploading is a pain for me

reminds me a bit of mach 4. good times.
I've been having a really strange issue with TF2 at the moment with regards to joining servers, whenever I try to join a Luxembourg server, either through quickplay or the server browser, it always errors and refuses to connect me then says that there aren't any servers in Luxembourg visible to me, yet I can always connect to the Sweden based ones. Any ideas?
Goddamn thais everywhere holy fuck

i love how you have a ghastly gibus on, too.
After returning to TF2 with nothing, I'm thinking about buying 65 "random craft hats" off of marketplace.tf. From my understanding that basically means I'd get 65 random hats for $19.50. Has anyone used that site before?
Why hasn't valve fixed their servers being pure yet.
i refuse to accept it's not an accident.
can someone point me towards some good mvm guides?
I wanna play some mann up but im not very expienced at mvm.
I can sorta tell you the standard meta. Yes there are many deviations, but these are the most common ways to play the class:
Scout: bring mad milk and fan o' war. Milk everything, mark giants for death, collect money. you will be kicked if you let too much money burn. You will be praised to the high heavens if you consistently give the team credit bonuses.
Soldier: bring buff banner. Make sure you keep your banner deployed near teammates as often as possible.
Pyro: I only see pyros temporarily during waves with tanks.
Demo: bring stickies or the scores. Make sure you drop all medics as soon as they leave spawn. You will be kicked if you're letting too many enemy medics pop their ubers, especially if you're the only burst damage class on the team.
Heavy: bring minigun or brass beast. Stand next to the dispenser and shoot stuff.
Engineer: keep your buildings up at all times. Use buildings to barricade super scouts. You will be kicked if your buildings are never up and/or if you keep letting super scouts get past.
Medic: bring kritzkrieg and ubersaw. keep yourself and your allies alive. Use ubersaw on sentry busters and distracted giants.
Sniper: bring hitman's heatmaker. drop all medics when they leave spawn with explosive headshots. use focus and go to town on giants. snipers and demos aren't commonly seen together since they share the role of dropping medics. You are very prone to being kicked if you're not doing your job effectively.
spy: collect money, sap stuff, drop medics. I don't see spies very much, as scouts collect money better and snipers/demos drop medics better.
General advice: Don't go sniper, spy, or pyro until you have at least a dozen or more tours under your belt. Those are the most common classes I see kicked under low tours. As long as you're fulfilling your class role, you'll be fine.
There hasn't been a TF2 update for 24 days and I've got a promise from Eric that they'll add "no hat but headphones remain" style for Batter's Helmet in the next update. What's taking them so long?
maybe they are actually making a good update
lol
yeah guys, 2016 is gonna be a great year
just like they said last chrismtas that 2015 would be great, or like they said the christmas of 2013 that 2014 would be great, etc
