RIP
I always imagined being a new player and seeing this pop-up and everyone going nuts in the chat. "Golden pan? Why is it so important? What?!"
Golden Pans are a curse
Having one gets you a ton of attention, and so does getting rid of it
I seriously don't get why anyone would throw away 3 thousand dollars for attention
If you just want to get rid of it without hassle, toss it up on the market for whatever the highest price is.
Would playing exclusively Mecha Engie/Gear Grinder give you a better chance at profit since you only have to spend $3 to complete the tour with the same chance at rewards vs $4?
probably not because you end up missing out on potential expensive professional kits

Put it up for sale - around 90% of accounts adding you are scammers, sharks or phishing bots.
Keeping it - barrage of trade requests (the above minus phishing accounts) and never ending questions on how you got it, what it is etc.
Paypalling it - high chance of being scammed or paid with using stolen credit cards (also a plague for high price unusuals).
Set your profile as private so no scanner can see it - you can't use most TF2 services such as Outpost because of your account being private.
The list goes on. After all that, I'm not surprised people decide just to flat out destroy it.
What about donating to a charity event? I remember when Star gave an australium and people payed lots of money for it in a big raffle. It would be a good thing to do and fund money for a good cause.
Or the steam marketplace. You'll be funded for every item and game you could want for a very long time.
Has somebody else problems with the TF2 Masterservers? I can only find about ~75 Servers for several days...

valve needs to take care of things better, or have a service where you can take money from your steam wallet and put it back into your card account (perhaps for a small fee) so people don't have to paypal to get money from expensive items

allowing people to withdraw steam funbucks means they aren't forced to spend it on steam. So, never happening.
Not to mention phisers easily swiping up steam wallets instead of buying ingame items and then selling them, which makes them easier to catch.

That's a good alternative in theory, but Steam Wallet balances are capped at 500 dollars, you're not allowed to list anything on the market that, if sold, would exceed the 500 dollar balance at the time, and the highest market price any given item can be set at is 400 dollars. At prices like those, you'd never see a golden pan on the market.

Ohhh. That'll explain why the moment that dude won a golden pan, someone said "easy 400$ right there"
I was thinking '1,000 keys does not add up to 400$"

a year ago valve made it so only nearby locations to you are registered anymore
http://steamcommunity.com/discussions/forum/10/558754259852724734
presumably they did this because idiots would join 800 ping servers and then send tickets I suppose.
its still fun when its like 3am and you're playing on your favorite orange server when suddenly someone from thailand joins the game with 600ping.
4000 posts raffle. Prize is an Ebenzer. Ends when I feel like it.
Rate zing. Or don't.

Fun fact: When I use a VPN to connect to server near my location I can find more than 1,000 servers.
When I use no VPN I can only find ~6 servers.
Edit: Both IP addresses refer to the same city.
Speaking of servers, I have this idea floating in my head, about opening a server myself.
But before investing money in a ship that's going to sink, I wanted to see how many players here would like to help, in order to keep the server alive and running.
Not asking for financial help, just looking for people willing to help get things started.
The server is going to be Europe based (probably located in germany), 24-slots with Popular Valve + Custom maps rotation.
Rate agrees and add me on Steam if the idea interests you; if you think I should give up on this idea give me boxes.
So I gave up on trying to find good European community servers and decided to play at STAR_'s server.
My ping is like 100 there but at least the players on ster's server aren't gibusvision goons with the sentience of a rock.
dunno man, i just like the game as it is, enjoy hats and expect even more hats, and midnight at orange-cp doesnt seem to bad for me.
feels like i'm some sort of unicorn.

Quick story, some time ago, I thought geel was the name of a web framework, or some sort of meta website thing related to tf2. This was until I saw the video with this guy in his empty apartment saying "tf2 is not dead" and discovered that it was actually HIM. (no offense geel)
to this day people actually thinks Metaru is my real name.

i asked why his apartment was so bland over r/tf2 a while ago and he said it was just his office
not really relevant to the discussion but i just wanted to mention it
this keeps getting spammed in my console:

very lovely of you to imply you would be at fault
when it's just valve's doing over and over

I'm getting it too, I don't think there is a way to fix it, and I think Hell-Met's right, it's on valve's side.
this keeps getting spammed in my console:
Failed to load sound "ambient_mp3\fire\fire_small_loop1.mp3", file probably missing from disk/repository

if i remember correctly, when they converted a bunch of sound files to mp3s way back when, they pretty much just indiscriminately changed all of the sound scripts to look for mp3 versions of everything, even for sound files that they didn't actually convert. this is what broke the soundscapes for a bunch of maps a while back, until they realized their mistake and corrected the sound scripts again. it looks like they missed one!
i think that sound in the error might actually be the one used for burning players, too, so now it's looking for the wrong sound file and printing that error every single time someone is set on fire.
