Is this the best place to ask technical questions?
Is this the best place to ask technical questions?
Someone might help.
Someone might help.
Ok here goes, sorry if it's the wrong place. Basically I'm having trouble running TF2 on mac. All the specs are pretty much the same if not slightly better than my pc where I can run it (with various settings) at 100+ fps. Yet on mac it plummets to 30 whenever there's more than 3 players on screen. Even lowering the settings, putting mat_phong 0 on and removing hats makes no difference positively or negatively. Any advice?

I can do shit with my arms you people wouldn't believe. Pyro most likely doesn't have scoliosis though. The suit probably weighs a ton, and if he started practicing his job at an adult age he's probably fine.

Tried installing the cheap particles mod but it still happened. Sucks though because it seems to be the only game I'm having trouble with no matter how I mess with it. Hell, I can run Modern Warfare 2 on max settings but it chugs on mid-high TF2, what's with that?

Custom 2014 mac mini. Intel Iris graphics, 16GB ram, 3.0ghz (3.5 turbo) dual-core processor.
Custom 2014 mac mini. Intel Iris graphics, 16GB ram, 3.0ghz (3.5 turbo) dual-core processor.
I found that when I played TF2 under Linux and a new GPU driver came out, my FPS would just plummet. Like, about 3 days after the updated GPU drivers were released, it just became a mess. I would suggest looking into updating your drivers but since I've only ever used MacOS in a VM for Earbuds, I have no idea if that's even possible, let alone updating Intel GPU drivers. [editline]24th January 2015[/editline] Off topic: Just noticed the TF2 Mega Exploit Pack (ignoring the name, has some nice custom settings like toggling ragdolls, lighting etc from a custom menu) is back in working order. Supposedly, you can get skins working in sv_pure 1 servers by changing something in each skin's VMT file. Could be used to get legit, non-hacking skins working on VALVe's servers.
Time to copy and paste I post I made in a few other places to explain how this works. "It may not be nothing new but I assume some people may not know yet and I assume many like to use the hd tip textures and such so I will go into further detail. Basicly in the custom folder you move all of the texture mods into "materials\temp" and then keep the vmt files in the normal material directory. But first you edit the vmt file and change the "$basetexture" directory to the temp folder instead since it is not blocked on valve servers. For example if one is to allow a blue demoman texture on sv_pure they change it to this, "$basetexture" "temp/demoman_blue". Remember to move the demoman texture to the temp folder in the materials folder. It will likely not be there so make a new folder for it. Once the directory in the demoman_blue vmt is changed to the temp folder and the vtf texture is in the temp folder itself you are finally done. I packed my mods into a vpk but I don't think it's required. Once in game you must create a server via the create server button and select the map that will load the custom texture before you join a valve server. I suggest you only do this with player textures and such as they are always loaded. After you load the map you join the valve server and the textures should appear and work on valve servers. This can be done on any sv_pure 1 server but it depends on what is type of files are allowed. All valve servers allow temp files so that is the example I used here." So all vmt's files can bypass sv_pure 1. And I believe this mod is mostly made of vmt files, so valve's sv_pure 1 bull is pretty redundant.
I have no idea then cos mines about half as powerful as yours. What OS is it? I've heard Yosemite has caused huge problems. Unrelated query, at what craft number do people stop caring about craft numbers?

No idea. 404 was right about the admins there.
Apparently those packs are why valve enabled sv_pure on servers, what the hell I hope they realized how much of an effect that has
Apparently those packs are why valve enabled sv_pure on servers, what the hell I hope they realized how much of an effect that has
What's even more amazing is how Valve went through all the work implementing Steampipe to only tell it to go fuck itself not long after because 1% of people are using that mod. Anyone know any pure vanilla (stock maps, no plugins, sounds, rtd, or instant respawn, no sv_pure) community servers with a decent amount of players on them? All I can find on the quickplay browser is TF2APP which is dead in the daytime and full of stupid children at night
How are those things that pack includes not considered hacks and still hosted there?
VAC considers hacking "Editing the executable files or .dll". Of which, the pack does neither. Since valve technecially couldn't do anything about this, as it does not fall under either of these rules, they decided to just block mods all together from their server. Just a classic case of a minority of bad apples fucking everyone over. They could theoretically send a cease and desist, but the mods are technically not illegal afaik. They would essentially be declaring ALL mods illegal since the pack mostly just edits things that are commonly edited (aside from items_game, which is supposedly a secret method to modify now). They would have to create VERY delicate new rules to declare what mod is technically giving unfair advantage and what isn't. Is seeing a particle attached to players through walls cheating? Of course. Is seeing MvM cash through walls cheating? I guess, it doesn't give an advantage over other players though? It helps the team. But sure, it's cheating. Are transparent viewmodels cheating? Well, it depends. You can have no viewmodel already, so it's sort of just that mixed in with having them on. So it's technecially? If it helps the player? But why should that constitute an unfair advantage if anyone can do it? Valve felt like the easiest choice was to fuck everyone over, but sv_pure 1 could have been completely irrelevant from cheating, who knows. some of their servers are still pure 0. Pretty much all of my mods are (or were) texture improvements, viewmodel animations, mat_phong 0 fixes, sound changes and so on. But sv_pure goes apeshit if it's set to 1 and you have a lot of mods, you'll crash every time you leave. So now i'm down to a handful of mods so i don't crash, and i don't even see half of them unless i go to pure 0.
With the Scotmans Skullcutter, does it only slow you down when you actually hold it?
;47002858']With the Scotmans Skullcutter, does it only slow you down when you actually hold it?
Yes, it was buffed to act like that just recently.

Hell, I can run Modern Warfare 2 on max settings but it chugs on mid-high TF2, what's with that?
Hey man. I found the solution to sudden fps drops. So, I think we can all agree on the fact that tf2 is a very old game. If you can run Modern Warfare 2 on max it does mean that your mac can handle tf2. For some reason this can lead to overheating. So what I did was put a maximum amount of fps in my autoexec.cfg and in the launch options so that your mac is balanced. You should find your autoexec.cfg file in your tf2 folder and put a certain amount of fps your computer can't go over. For example, I put fps_max 55 and now I don't have any framerate drops. I think my fps stays stable almost at all times. I also put -fps_max 55 in the tf2 launch options. This should definitely fix it. I should also add that I think my PC is weaker than your mac, so you should check out for yourself what maximum fps suits your machine. Idk why it works, I guess it's just like you're forcing your computer to go jogging with low speed so that it doesn't have to take breaks (the fps drops).
Why would you set to 55? I would do 65-60, so you can at least aim for that 60.
Is Steam broken for anyone else? Keeps going down sporadically for me and most pictures won't appear.
Well fuck me. I have no idea then cos mines about half as powerful as yours. What OS is it? I've heard Yosemite has caused huge problems. ?
Yeah, it's Yosemite. It still dips down to 50 in very specific situations but I'll try changing settings a bit for that. Thanks so much to everyone who helped, I was about to give up. Just gotta figure out the mouse behaviour now, but that's not TF2 related.
The Tomb readers look so awesome, I don't know which colour to pain mine. They look awesome unpainted but look awesome in every colour too. Making me want to start a collection, one of each paint, but I know that would be a waste.

Today I found out that FirePowered servers don't like the Lenny face :v:
Apparently those packs are why valve enabled sv_pure on servers, what the hell I hope they realized how much of an effect that has
At first I thought that why doesn't Valve just prevent certain files from being edited through vpks, like the decloak sound for example. But then I remembered implementing such would've been pretty redundant when it's more or less everything that's being effected. Sucks.
