VALVE CUT CONTENT V2+1: Digging through Valve's trash since 2003!
Prospero and Valve's Team Fortress. Prospero is stated to be one of the two launch titles for Valve along with Quiver/Half-Life, and VTF/TF2 was shown in 1998, which means they've been working on it for some time. Keep in mind that TF Software was hired exactly to create TF2, and I think they were already hired in 1997.
I'd like some links on that. The way I know it, yeah, Prospero was there, but I think it was dropped before HL1 started. And TFC started after HL1 was done, and modders (the people behind original Team Fortress for Quake) saw it and wanted to port TF. And then TF2 was concieved after HL1 and after TFC, obviosly.
Lemme build a crude and ugly timeline I imagine for early Valve's games.
1996: Prospero and Quiver
|
|
Prospero dropped, Quiver becomes HL1 w/ Ivan
|
1997: HL1 0.52]
|
Late 1997: HL1 almost completely scrapped and redone in a year
|
|
1998: HL1 released
|
TFC started
|
1999: TFC released
|
TF2 started
I don't see 'three games at once' anywhere here.

The mark who laid the law was hired in July 1997 (after Half-Life's E3 reveal) to write for both Half-Life and Prospero, so it means Prospero is still active during that time.

Robin himself said that he joined in 1997 because Valve wanted to make a port of Team Fortress to Half-Life. But here's the weird thing; VTF/TF2 came before TFC.
VTF/TF2 was shown to the public at E3 1998 whereas the first TFC screenshot of that daylight 2fort came out in 1999 (ask Marphy about that).
I think I read somewhere that TFC was a quick and easy port done after HL1 was released to show how powerful the SDK is (VTF became TF2: BoA around this time, which is 1999). You could argue that TFC also started development together with TF2 but it wouldn't make much sense to announce a radically different sequel before announcing a rather simple port, would it?
Going back to this, I'm pretty sure that the grunt is also using one of the scrapped alternate colors, desert.mdl.

Are you sure? Looking at the original shot, I am pretty sure that it is actually olive.mdl, as the sleeves are green (not beige/brown like desert.mdl).

You are forgetting the Submarine game that was eventually replaced by Prospero.

Made a certain synth from a certain piece of concept art from RTB. The model is fully animated.

I couldn't decide between the two, so I went with desert because it looks lighter in the screenshot, but it probably is olive, since the stripe on top of the head is much darker.

The textures kind of remind me of Telltale games for some reason...

It was posted about a week ago and the posts discussing it are still there

Well... we should have fun with that, I guess. Not that much of it was unpredictable - it was exactly how things were going towards in EP2.
Laidlaw himself says it is fan fiction. Even if it is its good enough for me. It gives me enough closure so I can let it go.

That oscillation thing seems to be the same effect employed in the hazruin maps. I can't wait to see some talented mappers make mockups of the idea.
It's quite interesting how the last pharagraph of the "fanfic" plot can be referenced to what could have happened at Valve and regarding Half-Life's development.Marc Laidlaw tried to give us something before that by tweeting under BreenGrub. He said Advisors were slaved and manipulated and he is their biggest fan.
He specifically prefers to be that character. Why?Because he simply means him, along with some others who had the same set of his mind have been denied to keep the wheels spinning. In every way.Now pieces really tie together with what have been told on the Andrew Reiner's interview and what Gabe Newell said all this time.

Its obviously fanfiction, because he no longer works at Valve - these ideas, although coming from the Man himself, are non canon. They cannot and will not be featured in any Half Life game, whenever that comes out.
Doesnt mean it wasnt the ACTUAL planned closing of the series, and that we shouldnt take it as exactly that.

Well maybe someone or a group of people willing to could turn the fan fiction into a fan game/mod. Would be interesting to see.

It's the closest we're ever going to get considering how HL3 is dead...
I wish that was still a thing. Last tweet was 3 years ago. This is obviously not the case (or is it... o_o) but;
<tinfoil hat speculation>
It almost seems in a way that the tweets were actually Marc subtly referring to HL3 and the team at Valve and how each iteration of HL3 was worse than the last. Also quotes like "I don't care if THEY hear me, do you hear? I don't care! I will not be muffled. Don't move me again! No more shifting from dark to dark!" and "They want me to be still but I cannot. I've had enough of stillness. Why should I flee again? Why should I fear? What do I really know?" seem to suggest and define the state of the project and how Marc keeps moving (or was forced - due to lack of traction on the HL3 project - to move) to other projects to fill in stories (like Dota 2) and that revealing anything about HL3 would put him in trouble. Maybe he finally retired because he had no energy left to try and revitalize the project, and why subsequently the other writers followed suit.

it's always been dead
Don’t expect much from Episode 3 until we get a definite confirmation that the NDA has ended. That confirmation would probably look like a tidal wave of information anyway.
