I imagined that the Cremator’s “plasma” was actually its stomach acid, and it was flammable. The Immolator would be connected to its “poke ball” stomach, and the cremator would pour it on whatever needed to be burned like gasoline. Then it would use the Immolator as a flamethrower with the alt fire.
I’m not sure how the green lightning would fit in though...
I always imagined that the cremators shot a flammable liquid that burned on contact, which is why the beam was green and the targets lit on fire.
I always imagined that the cremators shot a flammable liquid that burned on contact, which is why the beam was green and the targets lit on fire.
Interesting... I always thought the green lightning looked a little cooler than a flamethrower.
Speaking of... I don’t think green lightning would fit with the strider. Seeing a gargantuan thing walking around and shooting green lightning like that feels oddly underwhelming.
This is all just conjecture, but I believe that the behavior of the immolator is a left-over from the time it was the strider's weapon, and had the cremator been more finished it would have changed to something more similar to an acid spray gun.
We know that the immolator was originally made for the strider, and its current behavior very, very closely resembles the descriptions of War of the World's tripod's death-ray. They may have decided very early on that the strider was too much of a carbon copy of the tripod and changed it to use a different weapon, leaving behind the code for the immolator.
When they started developing the cremator, they probably just re-used the weapon without any changes to the code as a temporary stopgap, but they never got around to changing the weapons behavior to reflect its new role. The whole design of the cremator's immolator model very strongly suggests a weapon that behaves like a flamethrower, and we know that the immolator was supposed to be fed with ammo from a tube leading from the cremator's stomach, which very strongly suggests the ammo would have been acid.
Neither of these fit a energy-beam type weapon. However, the immolator's behavior does fit the whole tripod death-ray perfectly, hence why I suspect the immolator's current behavior is just left over from the strider.
The plasma flames, beam, and halo, are also probably left over from when the immolator was the strider's weapon. Their color scheme doesn't fit the bright green beam the immolator currently fires at all. I suspect the green coloration was a really lazy change when the immolator was transferred to the cremator to make it look more like acid.
Seems plausible. Hard to tell for sure, though. Interestingly, the Cremator's still referenced in the retail game's source code. Under shareddefs.h there's a damage type listed as DMG_PLASMA that, while semi-functional, isn't used anywhere in the base game. There's a comment on its line saying that it's the Cremator's attack.

Is plasmabeam used anywhere else? I think the Combine Guard's gun might be using it as its projectile texture, although that could be the gunship tracer texture too.
Afair it was used as energy beams at Citadel in the retail HL2.

someone do a remodel of the alien assassin but the back of the head and arms are based on trypophobia makeup, and pictures of various types of cysts. here's some reference CW: It's gross, looks really painful, not going to actually post the pictures just links. Actually I'm only going to link the two you can look it up yourself. But like the spiny head thing feels like it's totally trying to go for this, actually a lot of 2002 era HL2 art feels like it's referencing cysts and body stuff.

Great, now you've triggered my pain synesthesia! Now I'm stuck feeling like I have entire grids of holes throughout my entire body like a guy from a Tool music video! At least with the 2002 HL2 artwork, it was exactly that: ARTWORK! NOT SCREENSHOTS!

I havn't been able to sleep this night, and looking at these images did not disgust me, but rather made me feel really really really uncomfortable.
Has anyone tried making the Alien Assassin into a functional enemy?
Has anyone tried making the Alien Assassin into a functional enemy?
I believe Cvox had already made the Alien Assassin a functional enemy in some old builds of Dark Interval. It's most likely going to be an actual enemy that we'll fight in later Dark Interval releases.
Since the Stalker model still has the Clavicle bones connected to the Neck bone like other HL1/TFC models instead of Spine3/4 bone like recent models ala 2003 Combine Soldier, it's gotta be pretty early (unless the new boning scheme came into play in 2003 or something). Marc has said on multiple occasion that the Stalker was one of the earliest HL2 enemies though (probably already in the game since the 3 races and sacktick thing).
Maybe finding when exactly Valve implemented their new skeletal bones standard will help us date these models.
I will say another insane hypothesis, probably this model was taken from the canceled Prospero (1996-2002)? Maybe the whole Half-Life 2 was an attempt to implement the canceled concept design Prospero? As we remember initially there was a completely different protagonist (player): http://combineoverwiki.net/wiki/I.A._Latham. Now compare with this: http://combineoverwiki.net/wiki/Prospero. Both female protagonists? Coincidence?
Insider information. In 2009, a former Valve employee confirmed that the initial statement by Gabe Newell: "Prospero will come after Half-Life", he did it twice. First is "Ricochet" (2000), second is "Portal" (2007). As it became clear later, he tried to say about the Miranda model, which was altered, modified and unused player model in Ricochet: https://tcrf.net/Ricochet. He also said that the working title "Ricochet" was "Disc War".
The whole "this is the best leak mod" is stupid as shit. It's a matter of opinion either way you look at it. Personally I don't feel Missing Information is the best leak mod. It might have been the first mod to release various things such as E3 and the Borealis chapter (in our own rendition) but this certainly don't make our mod the best - far from it!
I agree with Cvoxalury that going with old stuff isn't always good. There are plenty of old props and models in the leak that haven't aged well, and we try to either avoid them or recreate them for our maps.
Saying people are stupid for wanting the old stuff is completely out of line though. People are allowed to have their own opinion. I'm aware there's a mod for Missing Information that brings a lot of content back we skipped, and partially breaks our mod. If people want to use that with Missing Information that's great, that's their own personal freedom. I'm glad Missing Information can still serve as a decent base for something like that after 13 years after our first release.
There are several mods that does a better job of recreating content than Missing Information.
I was always quite impressed with Project 9 even though it never was released (I'm not entirely sure if its still being worked on).
https://imgur.com/a/qJ8F1
Episode 17 (http://www.moddb.com/mods/episode-17) does an extremely good job as well, I'm quite excited for the release.
A lot of people are quite vested in the actual content and I respect that. I don't always understand it but I respect it. Each to their own. I prefer the atmosphere and story line over content and that's how we're all different.
I don't get the need to be rude to others over a common interest we all have in the end (on that note I'm not denying I haven't been like that myself sometimes).
I have one mod that has become the best of its time: "Half Life 2 Substance".
Hard to understand dude be all like "kojima kojima death stranding" then, "cool theory about the beta actually being prospero". Which is smart, when valve made games they kept trying to make this weird horror puzzle-platformer and the closest thing to that is the first portal, which i think he said... but the theory ignores the fact that the staff and concept designer people (like Erik Wolpaw or Kim Swift, they did portal) of portal didn't work at valve in 1995 to know that prospero really existed.
Why is it always in the VCC thread that weird shit happens?

Hit a roadblock programming wise. we were at a point where half-life map entities were needed, so essentially an entire re-code would be necessary.

it's not that hard to figure out what he's saying, you have to do it in two steps
1. understand the mistranslations from his native language, which happen in certain predictable ways with him, and account for them
2. disregard the Extra
I think you guys are trying to do these in reverse order, which is why you're having trouble? You're seeing the funny archaic word choices and stopping there. There's actually a lot of really interesting and well thought out posts underneath and I'm a little sad he got banned.
I have to agree. Infact i think i said something similar when his second alt was banned. When you put aside mistranslations, inserted shitposting and grammar choices that rival the old Time Cube website, you get a damn good historian. His post comparing different versions of a Beta antlion model was one of the best things to appear in this thread (i think it may have been in V2)
