That map reminds me of retail's d3_under maps more than the other airex maps. Did any of the "storyline" airex maps have a section like this?

In retrospect, this dude looks like a much, much less stylized version of TF2's Soldier to me. Beef up his jaw a ton and they've got the same facial structure and hair to match.
back when csgo was still new, valve (hp?) was working on the hazard course and they put a unfinished wip in the game at some point by mistake.
nothing really notable except they had temporarily used a left4dead sign which almost made sense

Captain vance and a few people including myself, were discussing some few topics regarding insolence and the beta. Someone posted an image from some E3 video and there was a different view model for the crossbow. Snip the other sentance, it is the Hl1 crossbow

It's the same skin, the image is just saturated and has contrast.

Honestly it's pretty much impossible to tell, the saturation and contract is just way too high and it looks like it was taken with a shitty camera off of a shitty projector. I'd say the only thing pointing that it's different is that the scope seems further back, but that could just be a viewmodel adjustment.
Even the hands look like HL1.
Don't forget that the hl1 crossbow has the chrome shader on it and there is no way to render it in hl2.
It's exactly the same as the HL1 model, but I think the chrome on the scope is broken, so that may play a part in it looking different, as well as Half-Life 2's FOV making the scope appear slightly elevated.

It's not a chrome shader for HL1S, it just uses a ENV Cubemap to render them.
Oh, I remember that crossbow screenshot. Looked it up, apparently, it's from a 2004 game awards show G-Phoria. How come they used a HL1 model in 2004?

Likely due to the HL2 model not being public ready. We really don't have context to the image, did they load it by mistake? I was always unable to grab the video that I assume held the demo...
Plus, the 2003 leak didn't have a Crossbow, it wasn't added in until 2004, this is likely the first batch of builds to include it.
Also, the ammo shows that it likely behaved exactly like the HL1 Crossbow.
It [i]is[/i] kinda possible to emulate the chrome shaded in source by specifying a material as only an envmap. Results are mixed, but it's much better than the broke-ass chrome textures.
EDIT: the 2003 leak used a shader parameter called something like $envmapsphere or something along those lines that seems to make a much closer effect to the original chrome shader.
You can absolutely do premade envmaps in hl2 source. It's a huge pain in the ass but it's how i got an authentic feel to the metal materials in csgo_bloodgulch. They use the cubemaps from halo as opposed to relying on env_cubemap reflections.
Spheremaps don't work in the csgo branch but they definitely showed up as parameters while i looked up how to do custom cubemaps.

More to my point, anyone know how I can convert the models from the beta leak to a newer .mdl format that works with EP2? I've already tried decompiling them with an older version of Crowbar but it only spits out a QC and physics mesh SMD.
would be really useful cuz there's a lot of great, potentially useful props that were completely cut from the game for whatever reason.[/del]

Sounds interesting! What areas from which game though? I would think you'd be doing HL2's cut areas, but then again you could also be doing the Episodes's cut areas (or just their beta versions, shown from images, videos and the gameplay demos).

Give it a subtle dark fog. Otherwise it looks really nice. I love the atmosphere.
