Please tell me you can put the gnome in the fridge
That would have made the gnome run 100x easier. Watch as valve will come out and say that the reason they replaced the old car was because it made the gnome run too easy
Come on we all know it was replaced because fuck realism. The wild fantasies of 3 playtesters are way more important, dont you know?

It's why you can grab the grenades out of the zombine's hands, and not the weapons from regular soldiers.

But the car change was nothing but aesthetic crap.
Why are you so hostile about this lol
Because I love the Jalopy :( Also because Valve's playtesters have a tradition of leaving out of the finished product really great ideas. (Im not hostile, its the way I normally talk)
The old Jalopy would fall in line with the "junk-punk" (tautology, I know) style of "citizen tech" where everything is pieced together from rusty remains, wood, scrap and other kinds of junk. Retail car is just too cool, but since 2007, Valve already didn't understand the style of their own main (at that time) series. Forests, rivers, cool cars.
The Muscle Car gets so much shit for not looking run down enough or not fitting into the theme of the games. Personally, I dig how it looks, because I love the Dodge Charger inspired design, the raised trunk with the huge wheels as well as the wider frame of it. It all makes it feel real beefy, while the original Buggy with it's smaller skeletal frame felt more maneuverable, but fragile. While I agree that it makes no sense for such a car to be around in the forest covered European mountains, the different theme of it compared to the Buggy really helps me appreciate both of them for different reasons. But don't get me wrong, the original Jalopy is insanely cool and I can't wait until it's brought back to it's full glory by the talented people in our community.

And it's just a Dodge Charger, they exist in Eastern Europe too. Hardly the most unbelievable aspect of the Half-Life series.
The Muscle Car looks like something that can actually ram Hunters and not fall apart. And it's just a Dodge Charger, they exist in Eastern Europe too. Hardly the most unbelievable aspect of the Half-Life series.
Certain models "existing in Eastern Europe too" doesn't mean they have to be in the game. City 17 doesn't have a single Mercedes or BMW or Audi while I assure you, Saint-Petersburg's streets are often choked with those damn cars. Have anyone here played an old mod called Legacy? That had BMWs on the streets of C17 (or whaterever city it was). Looked ridiculous. Also, about the not the biggest aspect. It's these smaller things that help form a coherent picture. Every piece in HL2 was placed there intentionally, down to heaters and handrails and chairs in the apartment buildings; picked by Viktor Antonov with his full intention. Ep2 doesn't create the impression of a game with very intentional desigh, more like it just came together as "a cool setting", cool, but more generic and lacking detail and losing its connection to the original. They ditched the wasteland, ditched desperate Resistance (now we have a bunker and a working rocket and can do anything), ditched the tech style I mentioned in my post above, even the Hunter design is arguable as it doesn't quite fall in line with the rest of the synths. The game is designed by a different artist (replacing Antonov) and I'm not a particularly big fan of their work.
Its inside the ship... you want to make the hull a model in that scenario? Doesnt seem the right approach to me, but if you do think otherwise tell me.
Your statement sounded like a general thing. So everything should always be brushes over models when it comes to gameplay related mechanics. That's why I asked. If Source could do proper model lighting, then yes that'd be the appropriate approach.
Didn't you guys actually make the model for the hull? Currently in 1.6, the front part alone is 57 brushes. Astonishing, since it can be redone with 3 or 4.
Yes we did.
The wait command isn't a cheat, its used in certain level transitions, so binding them in a chain doesn't make it the same as noclip, you still have full control of the player, all it does is delay the next map from loading.
But it's not used in such massive amounts, haven't checked the map sources, but probably only once in a few places. Anyway, if cloning entity behavior is allowed, why not just spawn all weapons in Point Insertion?
I personally think the old Jalopy would have been a nice throwback to HL2. Still, the question remains... Who the FUCK touched my scout car, decked it out with a bunch of weird crap, and why is it on a bridge!?
And it's just a Dodge Charger
the only people who own chargers in eastern yurop are either children of gang bosses or pimps and hl2 is supposed to be happening 20 years or so after late 90s
the only people who own chargers in eastern yurop are either children of gang bosses or pimps and hl2 is supposed to be happening 20 years or so after late 90s
The chargers have existed for quite some time so I would imagine a few imports could and would exist in that time line, General S.
The Combine duh, they did steal it
Those bastards pimped our ride!
the only people who own chargers in eastern yurop are either children of gang bosses or pimps and hl2 is supposed to be happening 20 years or so after late 90s
Gordon wasn't even employed by Black Mesa until "no later than May 15th" 200_ as confirmed by the Half-Life manual, and Gordon not joining Black Mesa until 200_ was reconfirmed by Laidlaw. So the Resonance Cascade happened an undetermined amount of time after Gordon's employment in 200_, but no later than mid 2009.

Remade another ancient HL1 alpha level, presented to you in glorious 640x480! (original level/image):
I'm almost entirely sure that entire little area got retooled into something for the final game, it's those big ass drainage/cistern rooms right before the hanging crates chasm
yet blue shift or decay (can't remember which) said it was his first day
Neither expansion ever suggested this. It is Half-Life 2 that confirmed Gordon had only been working at Black Mesa for a very short period when, during one of his Breencasts, Dr. Breen remarked upon Gordon's "brief tenure" while he was the facility's administrator.

I don't see Chargers all disappearing in that time span.
Agreed, hell I haven't heard anyone complain that none of the real life inspired weapons actually make an attempt to look like their real life counterparts, or how some of their functionality has no basis even in its own reality (SMG grenade, shotgun double shot). The environments in Half Life 2 are all purely fictional, atleast that's how they felt. The locations in Episode 2 felt very western, very Rocky Mountain USA-esque. The Charger is supposed to be a cooler jeep, and man did they one up it pretty damn well.

In other and more frank words, the artist was an idiot.
Or in other words: up to almost 2 years from now. I don't see Chargers all disappearing in that time span.
I'm not sure if you realise, but in the world where there are portal storms and Xen infestations, no one would keep producing and importing those cars. So the 200s would be frozen in time. Also, it would be so hugely coincidental for us to strike upon that one rare car preserved from 20 years ago. It's the same as if instead of the Resistance crossbow you'd get a nice, well maintained modern sniper rifle in a case, know what I mean? With Chargers and all the other 'cooler' shit it feels more like some Valve-produced Cinematic mod.
Considering that the vast majority of rebel gear is stolen or repurposed, a "nice, well maintained modern sniper rifle" wouldn't be too far-fetched. The game has combine snipers after all. Think about the insane number of AR2s the rebels got their hands on. Or the SMGs.
Y'all know we're just starting to nitpick at everything because valve has abandoned their most loyal fanbase, right?
These discussions happened in the heyday of Half-Life as well. We're nitpicking things because we're a bunch of nerds that find the minutiae of fake universes interesting. Well that's my reason, anyway
At the rate it's going, a couple of years from now this thread will be in unanimous agreement that Valve really fucked up by releasing a sequel to Half-Life and thus the game was ruined forever.
