VALVE CUT CONTENT V2+1: Digging through Valve's trash since 2003!

Bit late mate. We had a big discussion about the leak's old envmaps in V2. These old envmaps simply come from a time when building cubemaps wasn't a thing yet, so these envmaps were specified in the .vmt.
The fact that these envmaps showcase old maps and old textures should be common knowledge by now, right?

Is it a bad thing that someone found something new? Is it expected everyone know everything? Give him a break, he found something cool and was sharing his discovery, even if some people know about it already.

Judging by how goldsrc-like it looks, could this be from the hyper-era? It's just speculation, but a cool thought nonetheless.

Wow, that looks nothing like a ship interior if it weren't for that door.
The wall textures match up with this screenshot though, if it means anything.

I'm not sure. It doesn't look half life, rather it looks like it's from deleted scenes.
TheDoctor45 made VR versions of the leak envmaps back when the V2 thread was around if you guys can remember:

I think someone confirmed that the level in this TF2:BoA screenshot is a 1999 version of the Hyperborea/Borealis.
The walls in both the envmap and the screenshot have a thick horizontal line running through the lower part of the wall

and have dried dirty water leak thing running at the top.

Could be a variation though, since the one in the screenshot is brighter.
not really a discovery but we're missing something it seems here
so in the portal 2005 maps that we currently have, which include a few test maps and the finale escape maps theres "lab_lvl1" and "lab_lvl3a" in vmf form, no other lab_lvl maps seem to be around

lab_lvl1 is heavily incomplete only including one little tiny room

lab_lvl3a is complete, being the final level of the "2005 escape" for the portal 1 beta
but theres something wrong
it references a lab_lvl3 in the level change
this map could pretty much be anything and that could also mean that there was a lab_lvl2
it'd be great if we could find any screenshots of these old levels/something to reference them to give a basic concept as to what they could be
Wait what, when did 2005 maps became available? Link please.

Here is my reskin of Dog. We have just few textures of this model in the leaked hl2 build. What is your opinion on this one?

I definitely see where you are coming from with that, but I looked at the image you cited for your suggestion, E3_Strider, and saw there was a dead citizen shown, giving a side view of the model.
I looked at it but didn't see an apron running down from the torso:

The horizontal line looks more like a handrail bar as a prop in the cubemap
The horizontal line looks more like a handrail bar as a prop in the cubemap
It is actually, the envmap takes place in the map borealis_001, and there are a few handrail props on the walls where the envmap takes place (the handrail models themselves are missing from the leak unfortunately).

I have a new hypothesis. My guess is that the lower part of the torso is "hollow" inside up to around where the waist would be with the legs being inside the "hollow" section. Let's take a look at Cohrt's model as reference.

I think that's how this Citizen avoid the weird torso-legs issue your V1 suffered. Also, the leg texture for Citizen_17 fades into black near the top, which could mean the upper part of the leg is meant to be hidden beneath the coat.

Thats actually true for almost ANY humanoid Valve model, I was just pretty lazy when making the body of my V1. I focused mainly on the head due to a couple of people constantly telling me to change things about it (most of the time they didn't even make sense, making diagrams and stuff) while I was making it - I was burnt out by the time it came to polish the body.

Since we're going back to old topics, I suppose I'll start bringing up cool old stuff for discussion (and for anyone who didn't know about these already). Liblist.gam in hl2/scripts showcases some old stuff from the era of HL2 starting on the Hyperborea (which dates back to mid-late 1999 as far as we know):

Thanks mate. You asked PelPix123 for that model back in V2.
This is probably the final version of my dog reskin ( I've fixed some minor details for example arm textures):

I have found some interesting images of old green wasteland scanner ( I don't know where, probably in Doctors leaked hl2 build) here they are:

So I have decided to reskin Wasteland Scanner aswell:

I may give you download link for my reskins (combine soldier e3 sewer variant, Travis dog and green wasteland scanner) if you want.

Dindex are you still working on that wasteland zombie?
But that doesn't mean that Gordon was ment to start in Hyperborea lorwise
Yes, it most likely does. 'startmap' defines what map is first when the player starts a new game, why the hell would they go to the trouble to specify the Hyperborea as a starting map when they could just launch the map through the console?

You mean you think no test maps were made before Hyper_001? The idea that a campaign map was made before any test maps were made is a silly idea.

The game started in develop in 1999, including the map. Just because it was in smartmap doesn't mean lorewise. In fact they might of testing launching the map without console. There's no evidence that there's maps took place after Hyperborea in 1999. Look let's just take this to PMs and no one knows including myself about either or not Hyperborea was ment to be the first starting map, we should just drop it.
this is the most polite argument over the least offensive topic i have ever seen on facepunch
I'm sorry, but your points here simply make zero sense.
The game started in develop in 1999, including the map. Just because it was in smartmap doesn't mean lorewise. In fact they might of testing launching the map without console.
It most likely does. Do you think it's just a coincidence that it's the startmap? The chances of that are low considering we know the idea of HL2 starting on the Hyperborea existed at some early point in development. And what is that second point? There is no difference between how 'new game' launches a map and the way the 'map' command launches a map. And refer to my first point here. The chance of it being a coincidence that it's the startmap is very low.
There's no evidence that there's maps took place after Hyperborea in 1999.
Sorry, I don't understand this.
When do you think the 'game starting on the Hyperborea' idea was around, if not into mid-late 1999.
The start of every new year in HL2's development seems to have involved some kind of large-scale change. In 2003, most of the game's maps seem to have been started to be dumped and then remade completely, in addition to numerous areas that lasted into 2002 being cut here. In 2002, most of the game's textures (if not all) were redone (evident by the fact that so many missing/non-fitting textures that existed in the 2001 maps seemingly disappeared in the earliest 2002 maps), in addition to the W_ model format for world props being cut. In 2001, the older area based texture system from oldtrans.txt seemed to have been replaced with the materials system we have now (considering that most maps, if not all, from 2000 seem to be missing, a theory of mine being that maps that used the old texture system were simply moved/removed from the main map folder which could explain the disappearance of an overwhelming majority of pre-2001 maps being gone from the WC Mappack). And in 2000, we have no idea. Judging by the fact that major changes seemed to come around every year, it might not be a stretch to assume the game's order of locations (i.e. the dumping of the starting area being the Hyperborea to the razor train travelling towards C17) was reworked then, and not earlier as you might think.
