Hey! I was going to do that!
Why am I not surprised? I think I'll have a heart attack and die of "Not Surprise":

Here's a thing I've been working on:
(VERY early WIP. 2 hour old map.)

It's a remake of Marc Laidlaw's Hazard01 from scratch. I'll update later when I do some lighting passes.
Anyone have any videos of pre-SteamPipe content? I could put it in a playlist and link it.

Can't anyone just make a fix for the blinking problem? Excuse me if I'm wrong but it doesn't sound like it would be too hard to make.

There is this collection here which fixes several bugs across all HL2 Games and Portal.

not to mention post-orangebox eyes look like they have downs.
(very noticeable on gman, and hell even those fakefactory shots)
Has anyone played the original, first Deus Ex? (I know it's a dumb question for one of the most widely recognized and acclaimed PC games of all time...)
Is it just me or do the New York levels strangely resemble the early, American style C17 maps? Like, right down to the choice of textures and everything...
Somewhat, I suppose? I think it's just the general blockier architecture of the maps, coupled with the metropolitan atmosphere. I can't remember how popular DX1 was when it first came out in 2000, but I suppose there might've been the possibility that it influenced earlier designs of City 17.
One of the mappers worked on Kingpin: Life of crime, so there was probably more inspiration from there.

Yeah, I think Kingpin had more influence since it came out earlier + has Viktor Antonov the skybox artist + has Aaron Barber the guy who made most of the old city levels. In fact, I'd like to think they were hired exactly to create Chicago/NYC/City 17 for HL2 because they've already shown their work on Kingpin. Keep in mind that there wasn't many full 3D FPS's that takes place in a realistic modern city back then, so they're one of the few who has experience in city level design.
Those models were in the game until orangebox update. test_speakers wasn't updated and still requests those models, did you know that test_hardware also requests a sound file that can be found in the beta leak but they forgot to include? (and that test_hardware is a "camera" version of e3_techdemo_05)
They were removed before that I think - when it got more than one player model for each team.
Old brush based new york inspired cities just tend to look like that.

If you have simple geometry, realistic new york old buildings textures and baked lightning, it's hard not to look like that.

Funny as hell, I started reading your post in Max's voice thinking it was a quote.

Now that's a true kingpin.
One might even say that it's the kingpin of kingpins.

You sir, are doing something truly amazing! I always love to see beta maps remade to have better quality and improvements. Wish there were more remade beta maps with this kind of quality.
I think the room lighting in the 3rd screenshot is a bit too bright; in fact, the whole level feel a bit on the brighter side when it should've been mostly dull save for the dim fluorescent lights so it gives off the impression of a rundown facility. Otherwise, everything else looks great.

Doesn't really surprise me, every time they update the engine they completely fuck massive amounts of the visuals up

The worst part about that is that it's literally a one-line fix.
All that'd need to be done to fix it is change
m_iBlink = AddGlobalFlexController( "UH" );
in C_BaseFlex::SetupWeights to
m_iBlink = AddGlobalFlexController( "blink" );
and then that'd fix all of that.
Send it to alfred, maybe he'll do something

I really don't fucking understand how these issues last. Nearly every visual problem introduced by the Source updates could probably be fixed in, like, an hour tops. Things like maps loading into fullbright, or the skyboxes being completely fucked in entire chapters.
Like, TF2 was the worst for this kinda garbage, bugs that would never last in a game that was getting regular updates, but we let Valve slide for years. I mean Christ TF2 had a popular weapon launch without animations.
And didn't receive animations for FOUR YEARS. And didn't even get unique animations. No, no, they just moved the model slightly. A fix that would have taken, no joke, minutes.
