Major Update Speculation V35 - A Distinctive Lack of Communication
the scout's voice actor got a signed atomizer from the tf team and it had 30 signatures on it
Of course, you know about Valve's structure, right? The signatures were also from past TF2 teams.
cmon guys, they cant just say theyre releasing the pyro update this year and -not- release it this year!
...right?
the fun part about having absolutely no expectations for anything is that not only am I never disappointed, I get to watch everyone else get really mad and feel superior to them
Your first mistake was idolizing anything. Your second was thinking they can do no wrong.
The game has been out for nine years. Is it really that shocking to you that not many people at Valve have that much drive to work on TF2 anymore? MvM was probably the last big "giant twist" on things that was actively spearheaded by a lot of people at Valve.
It's important to remember, also, that they are working on Dota 2, CS:GO, VR, Steam and probably quite a few unannounced projects or experiments in other things. We already know that they have an "unannounced project" or something along those lines coming out next year, so that already ties up a few more people working on that.
I am not saying Valve can do no wrong, but I'm offering reasons and hypothesises as to why the updates have been lacking, instead of just whining about it.
That's all fair, but the problem here isn't that they're not updating the game (they are! That's great!), it's that their method of delivering content at the moment really feels like a carrot-on-a-stick where they say something is coming out soon and it's awesome.
Then it gets released and it's months after they said it would come out and it's not so awesome. That's incredibly frustrating.
I can appreciate that the game is old, they have a skeleton crew working on it, etc., but then... don't overpromise.
Looking this objectively, this was larger update than the basic updates with few notes. It did turned out to be smaller than i imagined.
It never was going to be the pyro update so people who expected that, are now disappointed.
Looking forward, next year we are going to get the pyro update, the comic, the jungle update, scream fortress and smissmass again so things are looking more bright for the TF2 10 year anniversary year.
I expected nothing and yet I'm still disappointed. At least there's a Festive Jag, now.
The one and only thing I wanted from them is to release a proper major update this year and they didn't even deliver that.
[sp]...I'm considering getting Overwatch for Christmas.[/sp]
I think the most gut-wrenching aspect of this whole sordid ordeal is that r/tf2 is collectively adulating Valve for making minor adjustments to Casual that should have been implemented months ago in a minor update. How are they so easily contented? Is it simple stupidity, or is there something even more nefarious at play?
Why? I get this game is old but really only -15 people care about it at valve??? Really?!?!
I remember back when I used to idolize gabe newell and think valve was the model of how to treat your customers, but I constantly am let down.
I really cant defend or attack this, it just feels hollow.
Tf2 is never going to grow ever again.
I dont wanna wait anymore, If this keeps happening I may just finally move on and leave this as a nostalgic relic of a game
Honestly though, CS:GO had 5 employees, and TF2 had 20 when Gun Mettle happened.
To strive some Optimism :
So far it has not been listed as a Major Update!

It's on sale right now.
You may be right but its hard for me to believe they are working on anything substantial when they are so goddamned secretive about everything, and their last substantial release was 2007. Its not nice to your customers to keep them in the dark so damn long, its frustrating as hell trying to be a valve fan.
As for idolizing them, it was mainly because after I played portal I wanted more content, and played through all their other games, and they were all fantastic. It was also around the time of the love and war tf2 update that I joined and for me the game was at its peak, so I was very excited until end of the line hit.
You really think that? since then you've had L4D1/2, Portal 2, CSGO and DOTA 2, 2 of which still have active development teams behind them, I wouldn't say 2007 was "their last substantial release".
by "that dude" he means EricS, who told you the next major update would be out before the end of the year
It wasn't Eric and it wasn't a guarantee.

The trick, as always, is in terminology used. They never promised stuff this year on the blog (Geel's conversation with Driller not withstanding).
The Pre-Halloween blog post only mentioned that "this year we’re working on something even better: an all-new Pyro Pack, improvements to Comp Mode, and a big new update and campaign.". Never mentioned release date, never gave more information than that.
The post revealing the war's winner only mentioned that the Pyro Pack will be shipped "in a future update".
As always, setting your expectations too high will just lead to them being shot down.
so did the gun mettle/tough break festivizers become normal festivizers now?
That's all folks! The cycle of the TF2 team continues from the start, as they lounge around the office for 6 months without production, raiding the snack room every few hours. Just when they realize they have a few days left to ship an update, they'll just cut and paste from older ones, and ship it out like it's a major accomplishment, as the cycle rolls onward.
So what do the new Festives look like? I believe they're just lights attached to the weapons, right? Not like the older ones with bells and wrapping paper and stuff?

Because people are brainwashed into thinking "Oh it's valve, valve can do nothing bad!"

I know this is an unpopular opinion around here but people tend to like different things and I'm pretty content with the update since the worst possible scenario I was thinking of was the pyro blogpost of no updates.
I doubt a subreddit is part of a Valve conspiracy to make TF2 look better than it actually is when r/tf2 has been pretty vocal in their displeasure of TF2 since MyM released.

Reddit just has a way of working that eliminates negativity very quickly. Don't look for conspiracies.
in an increasingly curious event, the schema lists a promo for a "ChefSteps Joule"
...which... as far as I can tell, is a legitimate, not videogame related in the slightest, sous vide machine. (sealed bag of food cooked in a controlled temperature)
anyway. https://www.chefsteps.com/joule
This is the first smissmas where I don't feel the urge to collect anything.
2016 keeps on rolling.
by god they finally did it.

There may as well not have been any update, so what's the difference?
It doesn't look like they added any new first person anims. Mostly everything now has (unused) inspect anims, so it's not really a surprise.

Most bizarre crossover ever?
it's kind of perplexing how some people think valve hasn't stopped caring about this game
