I really, really hope everything related to the casual matchmaking change gets reverted, the old system was just fine
All Casual needs is ad-hoc connection for it to be a flat out better service than quickplay IMO. I honestly wouldn't even give a shit if ad-hoc meant no EXP gain.
This is more of a halloween type update than smismass except no merasmissions. On the bright side i kind of like the new festives. That isn't worth much is it?
Yeah I certainly hope we see a major update in early 2017 instead of having to wait until the Summer to get it. It would be kinda sad if Valve couldn't get anything out until the summer. Though if we are going to get a big update in early 2017 I wish they would of put something on the blog like "We had a bigger update planned but we weren't able to finish it in time, you'll see it in early 2017" so we know something is coming.
While the optimistic me hopes for a Major Update in like two weeks, it's more realistic to expect something maybe in February.. Geel's "Driller said it should be done by the end of the year" is giving me strength to not lose faith yet Ill give it 4 weeks
I like how both MUS and /r/tf2 are flipping out over this update in completely separate directions. I think it was ok.
The update is ok, and that's the issue. We have a competitive game-mode that's basically dead because it fails to do the one thing it's supposed to do: be competitive. There's still a lot of balance issues in the game, and weapons like the CaC and the DDS have been overpowered for OVER A YEAR. The lack of class-limits makes the whole thing feel like a casual match with 12 players instead of 24. The player-base for comp is so small that players from the highest ranks are getting matched with fresh meat players. Valve skipped the halloween update completely to continue working on the Pyro update, which led many to believe that it would ship close to the end of the year. After an entire year of disappointment we expected more than a couple of cosmetics and some casual re-works come winter. This has been the worst year for TF2 by far and Valve needed to end it on a high-note. Also, wasn't the next issue of the bi-monthly comic supposed to come out by the end of 2016?
The team has no idea what they're fucking doing. Relegating balancing to class updates is so unbelievably shortsighted it's actually kinda incredible.
Smissmas was a mistake
"Valve Adds Something No One Saw Coming"
I think a promotional taunt for a food processor counts.
I got a backpack extender and I'm not really into cosmetics and shit, so im fairly pleased tbf. It means i dont have to keep discarding item drops instead of playing
The team has no idea what they're fucking doing. Relegating balancing to class updates is so unbelievably shortsighted it's actually kinda incredible.
It's either incompetence, or they're entirely reworking the class
I doubt they're reworking Pyro entirely- they referred to it as a "Pyro Pack", which just sounds like new weapons + weapon rebalances to me.
He'll just get some minor useless number tweaks Something like Increase flame damage by 10% Fix all the Pyro bugs sigsev has fixed for them And give him more situational useless free critical hit weapons.
Not trying to get your hopes up, but anyone think that the pyro update is timed to coincide with the US presidential inauguration?
Why can't valve just hire community content creators to work on tf2?
Why can't valve just hire community content creators to work on tf2?
There is literally no reason to do anything as long as they're still making money. And they're still making money.
Why can't valve just hire community content creators to work on tf2?
I imagine most community content creators are artists or map makers not programmers. Valve did hire Drunken F00l and asked sigsegv to apply for a job at Valve, which he decided not to for health reasons.
I really don't mind the update, personally. Considering they skipped Halloween and made this a small but nice addition to the game, it means they're not rushing out a bad update for the end of the year, and taking their time. I will be mad if we don't get the Jungle Update, new campaign, or Pyro Pack past Q1 or very early Q2 of 2017. The update isn't bad, just a little underwhelming. It also didn't break anything on release, and there's (probably) more coming soon.
Not trying to get your hopes up, but anyone think that the pyro update is timed to coincide with the US presidential inauguration?
no??? why would they do that?
I imagine most community content creators are artists or map makers not programmers. Valve did hire Drunken F00l and asked sigsegv to apply for a job at Valve, which he decided not to for health reasons.
If memory serves me correctly, DF00l and Jill know eachothers before either of them joined Valve. Arena_offblast creator insta also has been working at Valve for years. Thats atleast 3 people who joined Valve from community side. Propably there's even more.
no??? why would they do that?
Taking into consideration that this whole "Vote for Class Pack" event was held during the Presidential Election, all with promo material looking like a political debate and even with a "Make America great again" quote fitted for the Heavy ("Make Heavy great again"), there is this very small chance that they might launch it during the week of the Presidential Inauguration. That is stretching the update's release date it like crazy, but still possible to keep going with their "theme".
The TF2 team needs to communicate with us more, thats all there is to it The Pyro update must be taking up a lot of time and resources if this was the best we could get for Chrimbus. That's why I argued a few pages ago a second party dev team might be beneficial, or at least a PR team for the TF2 team that updates us on what is going on behind the scenes The comic isn't gameplay related at all but if you take into consideration how late each chapter of the comic has been released and how lackluster the last couple "major" updates have been, it paints a pretty big picture on Valve's attitude toward TF2 One of there biggest game modes, MvM, hasn't been updated in three years, and there was tons of hype and speculation leading up to it's release that seemed like it was going to add an extra layer to the game. They even went as far as to make ARGs for it That all said, the community is what is keeping TF2 alive. It's very much a legacy game now, and I wish Valve would just come out and tell us "yea guys, we don't have very much else planned for this game so just expect minimal or community focused updates throughout the rest of it's lifespan"
At this point, I'm pretty sure the TF2 team is not actually a team and is more like a few guys, no more than 5, who sit around a table during lunch break. I don't get why the hell is Valve focusing their efforts on VR which is pretty much going to be a gimmick just like motion gaming that'll die after a few years.
I really, really wish we'd gotten a new campaign. The contracts are really fun, they encouraged me to check on the game, and I could sell all the loot to make up for the cost of the pass. They take so little time and effort to make, it seems like a no-brainer.
The Reddit circlejerk, for once, doesn't agree blindly with Tyler McVicker and instead insists on ignoring the valid points made in his video and give him shit for (rightfully) pointing out that this update was supposed to be a lot more. VNN putting out a well-reasoned, well-researched video? Reddit not blindly agreeing with everything he says? Reddit defending Valve's incompetence when they've been the loudest critics of them, well past constructive and far past the point of reason? What kind of hell-planet am I on now? Is this a parallel universe? Is this Flashpoint? (oh yeah, Tyler- the CELT voice codec is broken too. so literally everything new added to this update- map voting, map thumbnails when voting, team-switching in casual, the new codec- is broken. not to mention some new cosmetics breaking textures, thumbnails for the new festives being broken...)

People are mad that Meet your match was the only update this year I think. Which is a perfectly valid thing to be mad about.
I've noticed people are completely ignoring MYM's existence. I've seen people praising smissmas as the greatest update of the year but refusing to acknowledge that's only possible because the one other major update was utter garbage. People think this somehow justifies smissmass being small and not a notable update, as if they've gotten their fill for the year. The game has had a net LOSS of content as far as i'm concerned, and this smissmas has only left me with a bad impression of the games future knowing we have developers who no longer care about communicating the progress of their work anymore.

I honestly expected the major one to have been fixed by now, but seeing as it's getting really close to the hidays and most people are going on vacation, we may not see fixes for most of them until after the weekend.

It's definitely a little early to expect them now, since we're pretty early in the day. I can verify that at least one Valve employee is working today- Kisak, the guy assigned to watching Github, has been active there all morning. Since the bugs I reported have been labelled, there's a decent chance that the TF Team is at least aware of the problems with the update right now. Also, can anyone verify- does Valve take the last week of December off? I feel like they might, to ensure they're home on Christmas/take a decent break, but I haven't heard any information indicating when their vacations actually are.
it's getting really close to the hidays and most people are going on vacation
And? It has always been like that before. https://wiki.teamfortress.com/wiki/Patches *22nd December 2014 *cough* You also forget they work on other things, and that they have a life as well. They are not robots. And the changes to casual are good, not perfect, but they did something. Show me one game that makes major update without making new bugs, and we will talk again. And that smissmas updates has been like all the previous smissmas updates (thbreak excluded).
Well, I might as well do a small poll while the Smissmas aftermath is in swing. I'm gonna ask when you expect the Pyro Update to arrive. Rate Optimistic - January, February Rate Useful - March, April, May Rate Agree - June, July, August Rate Late - September & Beyond
