Major Update Speculation V35 - A Distinctive Lack of Communication
Pardon me for asking, but can you still get spells? I've checked the market and such, but there's nothing there. Seems somewhat backwards if they removed them.
No spells last year, no spells this year. I fear they may have been permanently retired.
Which makes me very sad.
mate you seem really upset about that
you've mentioned your disdain for heavy tourism here and in the emporium
you alright mate?
People are allowed to like or dislike certain items, no matter the case. I've gotten items of mine called ugly alongside other negative comments, and that's okay. No need to be confrontational about it.

I don't think you can. You used to get those through Halloween gifts, right? Now that gargoyles have taken their place, it might be impossible to get them again. Another reason why I wish they would at least make some maps have the gifts and others gargoyles or switch 'em around every once in awhile. Spells were really cool, I miss em.
Correct me if I'm wrong, though. I wasn't able to play Scream Fortress last year because I was busy.

I've never actually tried or even seen this process before, it's nice to see it have a bit of charm and personality instead of just being a static trade/craft window.
too bad the same thing can't be said for the update :godzing:
I swear, there's like a running bet to see what 4 devs at valve can make a worse update for this game.

4 seems like a generous number lol
shocking news: valve does thing in their own way, only to learn their way is fucking stupid as the entire community groans on release
stay tuned for the same headline every week of every month for the rest of this games existence
This years choice of cosmetics pretty much solidifies the fact that Valve takes a half measure with everything they do. They couldn't even be fucked to try and make the COSMETIC case sensical. How little do you have to care about an update to diminish all of scream fortresses charm in one motion? They aren't saving their energies for something else. The amount of time they spent on choosing items (less than an hour) would have been more than enough time to grab 9 cosmetic sets for each class, implement them, and go back to shitting on mm's map pool for the next 3 months.
I can understand the resentment from MM that still lingers, but honestly... getting upset that the cosmetics don't fully match the theme of Halloween? I'm more upset that Merasmissions are currently busted possibly from an oversight in their code, and it won't be fixed until they come back to work after the weekend! Let them choose whatever cosmetics still linger in the workshop, as long as they're good, I don't give a damn!
I agree that the way they're handling things lately is dumb, but what's the point of being pessimistic and angry when you can easily talk to the team via e-mail and voice your concerns? If they don't listen, then that's it for them, right?
maybe i'll get dumb'd for this, but i quite honestly feel like valve should hire members of the community to work on tf2. with all the community updates and items and maps and effects and animations being put together, it's quite clear the community is more invested in working on it than they are, and at this point valve is literally getting in the way of the community making it a better game.
like nothing personal, they're a tiny staff and i'm sure they feel like they're regularly putting out fires and ripping out their hair from not having enough people on the team and constantly fixing bugs and getting told they suck. but at this point it feels like it really would be better served by giving the community more control instead of sort of being in the middle, encouraging the community to support tf2 but then rarely releasing updates and acting as gatekeepers we regularly find ourselves in disagreement with over what content they add.

That's not a dumb statement at all, I've seen the same statement multiple times before when people realized high-level contributing community members like sigsegv or b4nny seem to be vastly more motivated to update the game properly than valve would be (ignoring the latter isn't a coder or developer)
valve just needs to put their foot down force some people to stop working on vr and instead work on their actual live games, most of this update seems incredibly rushed, even for a community update, not even mentioning this is the first scream fortress in tf2 history that didn't have it's own update splash page, and the first one in years that didn't have a comic either.

Having somebody non-biased from the tf2 community be recognized to play at least some sort of community relationships role would be pretty great. This is something that me and a few other tf2 community members got into when we talked about the Halloween update on twitter earlier. Game devs outside of tf2 have also remarked that these last few updates are inacceptable for shipping out with these faults and bugs like they have been. Having someone represent or keep relations with every side of the tf2 community as a whole to see what would be best for tf2 could be amazing.
Having someone actively listen and know exactly what could benefit tf2 for the longrun would breathe some life into this game, and it'd be a welcome change. How possible something like this could be, is entirely up to Valve, of course. To see things get better with the help of someone who has done stuff for tf2 community-wise would be a good option to look into, for their own sake.
As far as tf2 updates go it's been a pretty stable formula up until the end of 2014, it feels. Things have been too weird or just off with updates (ex: SF consistently having at least one full cosmetic set for each class up until 2014, then a big ol' slew of who knows which items to give to one class, or just none at all in medic's case last year) and the same thing pretty much happened with the latest update. At least each class got their own class-specific item, it seems. These faults aren't just items, no doubt, but is one of the only examples I can think of at 1 in the morning.
If Valve could have someone reputable from the community report to them, somehow, someway, with how the tf2 community feels or thinks would be really nice. Again, reputability and someone non-biased of course, would be best- I heard stories of Dota 2's community manager (?) making choices for their friends and not Dota, heart in the wrong place, etc. Tf2 needs someone who has the best for tf2's interest at the end of the day. I'd love to see that.

Actualy, sigseigv was invited to valve so he could work for them due to his determination to solving most bugs in the game (especialy mvm ones) but he couldnt work due to personal reasons.
But if he did then we would have someone from the community giving us information about what is going on from inside valve's office and he would probably scold other employees for not doing their job properly.

You've described exactly the role of a community manager, and I don't think the TF team knows what that is.
Heavy Tourism is something they should have added in a summer update. Hell, I would have tollerated it being a Smissmas item.
And ikes, don't reply to this post in an attempt to justify yourself just because I mentioned an item of yours. Your posts give me headaches.
I agree
though I did initially release it for SF 2015, so maybe that has something to do with it?
no need for the aggression though mate, your smarmy self-righteousness gives me headaches too. thought you should know that, because it's important and totally makes my point more valid.
So I had, like, 40 weapon cases + keys from Tough Break/Gun Mettle sitting around for months now, and when I saw the "double unusual chance" thing, I thought, "Wait, there's no Halloween weapon effects, so it'd default to regular weapon effects, right? NOW IS MY MOMENT" and unboxed them all.
Not a single unusual.
So I buy 10 unlocked multiclass crates, get an unusual on the 3rd or 4th unbox. Yay.
Then just now, I buy a single multiclass crate for the sole purpose of triggering a trade I'd been waiting on. And I get an unusual from that one, too.
What the hell is even this.
I opened 13 all class crates, because i was sure i would get unusual. Nothing.
Then later that day, i opened 1 killstreak crate and unusual it is.
To be honest at this point I'd rather they rebuilt TF2 in Source 2 or something rather then continue to push shity update after shitty update because it's clear TF2 is getting to the point where "small" things can completely break the game. It's impressive a 9 year old game can last so long and still run today but it is a 9 year old game with 9 years worth of updates, fixes and tweaks running through it.
I'm kind of secretly hoping that's what's actually happening and it's why there's been a lack of communication and quality testing but I doubt it.

I hate to tell you but a port of TF2 to Source 2 would probably have a lot of issues for a very long time.
"I agree that it doesn't fit, which is why I submitted it for last year's Halloween"
That's some ass-backwards logic.
i knew it didnt fit back then either but I just tagged it "in case"
i submitted it normally i think in early oct and then retagged later for woh
they really are going to make us wait until monday to fix the missions, aren't they?
they really are going to make us wait until monday to fix the missions, aren't they?
if they werent willing to come in on saturday to fix it I doubt theyd ever take a sunday to do it
so, yes. we're gonna wait.

Oh good. Does this mean another day of 'HELP MY MISSION BROKEN!!' spammed in chat?
so uh what does tourism have in common with halloween?
because ikes' cosmetic got in for the halloween cosmetic case that nobody can unbox ever.
Did they even bother checking whether or not the cosmetics are halloween themed?
I mean, it's a nice cosmetic, but it's not a halloween-themed cosmetic sorry
i guess "tourist" is a halloween costume?

It's ironic too as it was available since last year and would have been perfect for Tough Break. I actually thought it going to be in Tough Break. So seeing it now only boggles me further on how Valve tests and picks community items.
Just so everyone knows, some of the new ~spooky~ cosmetics are being sold for relatively cheap prices on the market, especially considering the issue we have with these cases.
I got a creepy crawly case. I am selling it woo!
I might open one when the case price will go down drastically.
And it's sold.
After the clusterfuck of matchmaking and Scream Fortress, I shudder to even think about what Smissmas wil be like.

The new smissmas.
If Valve functioned as a traditional hierarchical corporation, the employees responsible for shipping several underwhelming and bug-ridden updates would have been either dismissed or severely castigated. No company in their right mind desires PR as poor as Valve has right now, and the fact that they can persist in operating as usual with almost no negative effects--due entirely to their monopolization of digital game distribution--is absolutely repulsive.
They have no regard for their customers and their organization has no accountability.
