Major Update Speculation V35 - A Distinctive Lack of Communication

We got insight as to how big the TF team is, we know what to expect during the next major update, and a HL/Portal movie will likely be how that universe is wrapped up.
That AMA was a huge success today.
So I dug a little bit and found this little snippet:

TF2 in Source 2 confirmed? Or just taking away all our developers?

It's the ideal to have everyone on the same engine. However, it's more difficult to pull off in practice. You make changes to improve one game, then things break in other games.
Remember the Orange Box and Steampipe updates that were applied to the earlier Source games? That's why every major game is operating on its own branch of Source now. Source just couldn't support such an ideal.
The implication is there, but I don't know, Gabe would like a lot of things. It's possible he forgot about TF2 for a moment there, it's an easy project to forget about. Probably was thinking more about CS:GO and VR (which is AFAIK powered by Unity even at Valve). No guarantee that it's really happening.

I imagine he's talking about CSGO and TF2. It doesn't make any sense to only have TF2 on Source 1 for long term development support of the game.
although I asked about it, and many others did as well and got ignored, I can't think of any possibility that TF2 can get Source 2 anytime soon, at least not before CSGO does, and even CSGO probably won't get it as well

I think it got buried in the questions, but there was a comment Driller made about a new campaign and the Pyro Pack, if someone could find it, that would be awesome.
Wait we have 16 people working on the game then? So why was Smissmas so half assed? They surely could've taken the time to at least do a few fixes?
Because they are putting their focus on the coming major update and have little time to put out one for smissmas.

Thanks Nebrassy, it's the 3rd comment in the list for those interested.
for a quick recap, if anyone missed anything, these are all accounts of valve employees who replied so you won't have to dig through over 12000 comments:
Gabe Newell
Dave Riller
Joe Ludwig
Ido Magal
those two didn't reply but they were there, linking in case they replied later (I doubt it)
Erik Johnson
Chris boyd
So Ludwig is a surname then...
Matchmaking is also changing the way TF2 can be played casually. Now, instead of jumping randomly into an in-progress game, you'll be matched into an unranked 12v12 game with players of similar skill. This means no more auto-balancing—you'll be playing a match from start to finish, with actual winners and actual losers.
Then why does the Casual of today do absolutely none of what it was advertised to do at launch to differentiate its experience from Quickplay? Why would they claim to "support" new player experiences while they turned Casual into the system it was supposed to be different from? Why not have kept Quickplay and added Casual as a legitimately new way to play the game?
Making it a separate way to play that's just slightly different would just fracture the playerbase, the exact opposite of what they wanted to do
Making it a separate way to play that's just slightly different would just fracture the playerbase, the exact opposite of what they wanted to do
they kept the playerbase fractured when they made a competitive mode that doesn't work and decided to not support community servers
they kept the playerbase fractured when they made a competitive mode that doesn't work and decided to not support community servers
Except comp is dead because it's shite and community servers are dead so everybody's playing casual. Killing community servers might have meant something was lost from TF2, but it did the opposite of fracturing the playerbase.
Goddamit I thought the ama was on Wednesday not Tuesday, nevertheless I still would've missed it. But did anyone ask if Newell or any of the Employees (except Jill cause screw Jill) could do a q&a on Facepunch?

Facepunch is probably the last place they'd want to do a q&a

This is a huge step in the right direction.
Just a heads up while you're here Jill, comp DESPERATELY needs placement matches. Making it a progression system means that a long-time, really good tf2 player who's just started official comp gets placed with the people who play lots of comp but have been ranked low because they don't win many games. There's a bandaid solution where people more easily get out of low ranks, but that just means the low-ranked-because-they-aren't-as-good comp players all end up higher too, and even if they didn't get higher they'd still have to fight the new-to-comp-but-tf2-veteran players, just a little more briefly.

Adding onto this, class limits are also a necessity if you don't plan on massively rebalancing every class in the game. Even if you do, limiting certain classes to 1 (Medic, Demo, Heavy, Engie) results in a faster, easier game to watch.

Take those limits to comp. You'll take my casual 4 snipers from my cold dead hands.

not sure why you didn't include those three, if we're going by the actual 6s meta
