So it's pretty much guaranteed that the update will be outrageous?
Neat.

Truly Outrageous.
Everytime I read these "I emailed them and they did what I asked" I think about sending valve an email with suggestions
but then I think I'm being too optimistic
Also I really like what Valve has been doing lately with the lil' alert boxes
could be, still a good timing with the FaceIt tournament starting soon

Giving the timing with a FaceIT tournament I'm guessing that FaceIT got the TF2 team to add the codec in more quickly then they otherwise would have but I guess we'll never know for sure.
Essentially from now on if we want critical changes to be implemented fast, we need one befriended league/tournament admin to relay our requests to Valve. Years of asking for a better codec didn't do anything, one email from a FaceIt admin worked wonders.
How are we supposed to stay positive about the game's future in that scenario?

Depending on your suggestions, you should at least try.

You have no evidence that his email actually caused them to do anything.

He wrote them an email about CELT for TF2 before their tournament, and not only he got a response but the change was implemented pretty quickly.
Don't you think it speaks for itself? Are you actually going to lie to yourself it would've been out now anyway? Doesn't "only enabled in community servers who opt into the beta" look odd? This should be in the vanilla game and valve servers, not just community servers.
Oh yeah, wait.
The tournament won't be played on Valve servers!
Add the two together, and you'll see my point.

This codec has been asked multiple times on years at hlds mailing lists by several people who run servers. It's not like they receive 1 mail and implement stuff right away. It may have been the final plus to the matter but certainly not the only reason they implemented this.
As for why it was made available only for community servers first, is because valve has been rejecting those for years, ever since they turned now late quickplay to bring in most of the players only to their servers. So they compliment those for this addition first.

I see a coincidence. I see absolutely no evidence. This is conspiracy-theory tier reasoning.

It all comes from the fact that all the community members asked for a better codec for so long to no avail and suddendly/magically one FaceIt admin gets it done.
Really makes you wonder, doesn't it? Maybe (and I actually wish so, don't get me wrong) it's a coincidence, but the negativity you slowly absorb over time being a part of TF2's community corrupts one to think otherwise.

See, you keep assuming that he "got it done."
Where's your evidence for it? I know it appears likely and it wouldn't surprise me if it were true, but it's an unreasonable assumption.

Deep inside you feel the same, don't you?

... you already invalidated my post with an edit of your own.

That's not an argument?
That's not an argument?
And I am not saying it is an argument, I'm literally expressing what it looks/feels like. I may have stated it like it were a fact for which I apologize, but you must admit that it seems like the only possible explanation of the entire event.
I absolutely admire the fact you attempt to stay unopinionated and factual in an effort to preserve the last bit of hope/trust in the TF Team

I think that there is a fundamental misunderstanding of the roles everyone plays.
Valve produces a product. They don't "owe" you, or me, or anyone, anything. They don't have a moral obligation to create the content you want them to create. They don't need to keep developing TF2, but the fact that they continue to do so isn't "praiseworthy", it's fucking business. I have no doubt that most of the people working on TF2 like the game and enjoy working on it, but that doesn't change the fact that getting pissy and angry at them is useless and silly.

If every argument could use "gut feeling" as legitimate evidence there would be millions of innocent people in prison
Sorry for my ignorance but what's this voice codex thing and why is it so important?

But for tf2 now.
Sorry for my ignorance but what's this voice codex thing and why is it so important?
you know how if people use voice chat the mics sound like shit? valve's making it not do that anymore by replacing it with a newer version.
then we will be able to hear every expletive thrown at us by our mums' 12 year old boyfriends with crystal clarity.
now i can hear micspams in HD quality!
now i can hear micspams in HD quality!
I honestly feel like micspammers will be kicked less now that it doesn't sound like it's being played through someone's arse.
Sorry for my ignorance but what's this voice codex thing and why is it so important?
Here, real answer.
Basically, it's a thing this game needs to have any Competitive future. The TF2 comp community has depended on outside VoIP solutions, such as Mumble (which uses the CELT codec!), in order to provide high-quality, low-latency communication with their teams. TF2's old codec had poor quality, which made many people impossible to understand when they spoke, and high latency, which meant your teammates couldn't react quickly to your calls.
This new voice codec should handily fix both of those problems. Once it's confirmed working in Community Servers, I imagine it'll also be enabled on Casual and Competitive servers. Once it is, TF2 as a whole has had a significant, game-wide improvement to quality of life and coordination, and Competitive players won't necessarily need to always have Mumble/TeamSpeak/Discord running in the background.
honestly, even though improving the voice codec is a good thing, I can't help but feel we lost something.

the garbled shit should only be associated with the HL1 engine. it's still a mystery why source was lazily given the same thing.

incomprehensible 12 year olds?
when is it safe to confirm valve not doing a community update this year? I'd be guessing early to mid december?
when is it safe to confirm valve not doing a community update this year? I'd be guessing early to mid december?
On one of the community update threads (I think the Mayann one) they say that they were told by Valve that if they decide a community update is going to go official they'll post about it on their blog and give everyone a chance to contribute (with a definite end date for contributions posted).
If any of the community updates are ready late March or sometime in April seems like a good time since the contracts from the winter update would be over and there would still be some time until the summer update.
