Major Update Speculation V35 - A Distinctive Lack of Communication
It was not a major update by Valve standards, not even an update page, so it isn't listed there.
The Summer 2013 and latest Scream Fortress were clearly major updates but don't have update pages so they aren't on the history page.

There are other updates, such as Community map pack consists of 3 maps which has an update page and it's not listed in major updates and that is not the only one. There was also some other update that had a page but can't find it now for obvious reasons because it's not listed in history. Page or no page, some updates are not considered major by Valve. I was rather disappointed to see the scream fortress is not one anymore and i'm afraid they are going to fade that away completely forever.

Well, I did NOT see this coming.
And it looks like this might tie-in with a lot of Mayann items!
Does this mean we're not getting Smissmas and Cactus Canyon
EDIT: "Next Few Months"...this is for next Summer?? Jeez. They should just use the Mayan update items.
Well this is kinda out of left field, huh? Kinda confused about all this.
Community: "We wanna do updates about warfare and the mayans!"
Valve: "You guys like palm trees?"
how come theyre not finishing their other two beta maps before starting a fuckin jungle one lmao
I mean I'm glad to see it though
"Working on" a "new tropical jungle-themed map", eh? :quotes:

As ever, I'll believe it when I see it.
Hypothetical conversation about to happen:
Valve: HEY COMMUNITY, GO MAKE JUNGLE STUFF
Us: So uh, you're making some yourself? Can we get those assets?
Valve: What? pfffft
I actually quite like the aesthetic of Borneo, so having more maps in the game like that would be cool.

I read as I see a blizzard happening outside my window in the middle of November because why not

This is inevitably going to be the "big new update and campaign" they mentioned prior to Halloween. An ironically tropical-themed Smissmas made almost entirely by the community, with a few generic contracts and gaudy skins tacked on with absolute bare minimum effort on Valve's part.
Tell me you can't imagine the following on the update page:
"I know we told you we were working on a tropical jungle-themed map of our own, but the truth is... the community outdid us! Damn your eyes, you talented bunch of misfits. Ho ho ho, aren't we such cards."
'Tis the season. Joy oh joy.

What about "over the next few months" makes you think it'll be launching in a single month?

So they will add it in as Beta...
Then leave it unfinished for 2 years
Oh wait, Beta doesn't exist any more ever since the Meet your match update launched

Considering they want it over the next few months, it's going to be our next summer update if we are lucky.
This just feels oddly, uh, irritating?
The way they worded it makes me optimistic that they are looking to ship it in Q1, since that is when you need some Jungle in your life.
Then again looking at how asteroid turned out...

finish moonbase first ffs

Yeah, sorry; I overlooked that bit. Box me senseless.
Although: Valve Time. Didn't they shorten the Halloween deadline for contributors by a few weeks this year with no prior warning? I just have a perception of Valve and the TF2 team being woefully disorganised. Can't imagine how I got such an impression.
It would probably help the map makers if they released the assets they plan on using
So we don't have 4 different sets of tropical assets being used
I'm aware but i really dont know what to expect from tf team anymore. It could turn up as very disapointing like MyM
Disappointing as MyM turned out to be, it did everything it said it would (which was really just add matchmaking, some maps and balance changes- that's all we knew to expect for sure), just not very well. It was a high-ambition update, make no mistake, but even with server-architecture related delays before release, it still didn't quite meet the bar that the TF Team seemed to be aiming for.
In this case, the TF Team has pretty much told us exactly what to expect from Smissmass. Even if they aren't able to fix everything wrong with Pyro, they're at least aware of the issues, as shown by the blogpost they made when Pyro won, so there's that. I'm hoping they'll also finally ship the necessary changes Comp Mode needs to be playable and has needed since day 1 (class limits, proper MMR, etc).

Judging by the "few months" submission deadline, I think it's safe to say that we'll be getting a new, mostly-community update (sans the Valve map) in February or March. Probably the latter, to at least sort of time it with the coming of spring.
I guess this is pretty much Mayann and how Valve are handling community updates now. Cool, I guess.
(At least they actually announced a deadline and shit this time...really loved the radio-silence-until-blogpost-and-now-everything-is-past-due they did with Halloween this year.)
I wonder how they'll optimize the foliage. pl_jungle's always suffered from framerate drops with trees and bushes covering everything.

Yep. Absolutely safe to say that.

lmao nobody seems to know what to make out of that blog
just so random and outta nowhere especially when they've got half a dozen projects to finish (or acknowledge)
hilarious
if it drops in march, my 18th birthday becomes even better
"Next coming months" so they propably release this at may-june for the summer. Pyro is going to be the santa. I would love to get my hands on those jungle assets though.

I don't think that is the map that Valve is working with.

Last time they made a deadline like this for a game update, it was Halloween 2015 and they released it a few weeks after the submission deadline.
Considering the much higher amount of time given here, and the fact they already have a map in progress, I don't feel like my estimate is a bad one.
The comic is a bad example, too, since last we heard about it it was nearing its final stages of completion. The artists still have about a month left to meet the deadline made in September, and according to Jay's most recent post (early October) it should be out before the end of the year.
honestly I have high hopes for us finally getting this jungle update for spring
Well this was a nice birthday surprise, sort of.
